My family really enjoys the blue ribbon vanilla ice cream
Yep a classic and still the best
VERY creamy but no great vanilla hit.
My favorite vanilla in Aussie also.
was go to when I was a kid, very creamy but not intense flavour, so was great with canned fruit.
The product cant be called 'ice cream' as it doesn't have proper real milk and cream (blue ribbon has reconstituted ingredients). You'll note lots of products don't have the 'ice cream' tag on the tub because of this.
They definitely do refer to it as ice cream on the tub.
@apsilon: It's not called ice confection but I wonder why they don't say Ice cream either on the top or front
@bobvegas: Probably because they don't need to, it's one of, if not the most, recognised ice cream brand in the country.
@apsilon: Interesting, just had a look and the main "pretty" graphics have no mention of ice cream, but the side panel with ingredients and nutritional info state "vanilla flavoured ice cream". I'm not sure how the labeling standards are meant to apply.
I believe this has enough fat but don't know about the rest of it.
All that said, one of the best supermarket vanilla "ice creams" in my eyes as well.
@apsilon: I'm pretty sure none of the Streets stuff passes the ice cream definition. At best, they label it as "reduced fat ice cream" since it doesn't meet the fat % to be ice cream. Their ice cream range is branded Connoisseur.
Up to the consumer if they care or can taste any difference between milk fat vs vegetable fat or whatever else they put in ice dessert.
@karn1911: I don't care either way, just pointing out that they do refer to it as ice cream on the container and if you asked random people on the street what this is (holding a tub of blue ribbon) almost all of them are going to say ice cream. It is also one of the better tasting and value for money tubs in the supermarket.
@karn1911: Streets Blue Ribbon is 10.8% fat. The baseline is 10.
Good mid tier ice cream
Certainly, Streets Blue Ribbon(Vanilla).Never on special but regular price is about $6 (2 litre). Lovely and creamy.
The Much Moore brand does not seem to produce a vanilla (how weird !!).
There no vanilla taste in that. It’s just milk flavored
Connoisseur vanilla is good, it's my go to (only when on sale), otherwise Blue Ribbon has a distinct flavour.
The Häagen-Dazs vanilla gets a notable mention, it's excellent but stupidly over priced (did you know it's American, not Danish?!).
Ingridence wise the Haagen Dazs is the best! All others are filled with gums and fillers… list goes on… It is actually not that easy to use simple ingredients in order to keep long shelve life… Only Haagen Dazs can do it as they use patented technology believe it or not….
Haagen Daas, chocolate one is made in France,
All Haagen-Dazs is made in France :)
Yep read this a while back. American owner wanted something to sound sound danish and spent hours on his kitchen counter saying random words until something stuck!
@ Ozybe. I asked the same question a few months ago. Have done the rounds and each has something to offer. Guess it depends on what your taste buds are searching for. I want a strong vanilla flavour but even the 1l tubs like the NZ award winning Kapiti disappoint there (it's very marginally better than Streets imo, at more than double the price per litre). Wrt supermarket 2/4l tubs, if you like buttermilk Aldi Silver Scoop is better than average, Streets BR is very creamy, Peters has a distinct flavour but barely classifies as ice-cream on fat content, …….
I'm still looking, will probably revert to Silver Scoop.
Bulla murray st vanilla bean and Coles vanilla bean (was woolworths before but i guess supplier jumped ship) are my favourite easily. Havent tried Aldi for a few years so they might of improved.
Costco Kirkland super premium is also very good although the vanilla flavour is different.
Yeah it's very good but very Sweet for my taste.
Yeah, its a bit of adjustment. It grew on me by the second tub. I'll only buy it maybe once or twice a year to keep things interesting. The above 2 others are regular staples.
Connoisseur. good balance of cream and air, ice cream is sold by volume not weight because different brands churn differerntly
I like the Connoisseur in vanilla, nice kick of vanilla
They don't always have it but i love the Costco Kirkland vanilla ice cream. Really rich and creamy. 2 x 2ish litre tubs is probably the only annoying thing about it
Used to be Connoisseur vanilla but tried Bulla Murray St vanilla bean when it was half price and it's now my go to
You literally eat the worst stuff. lol.
I prefer Bulla but there are some premium vanilla bean ice creams which have a stronger vanilla flavour but not to everyone’s liking.
According to an article done by The Guardian in 2023, Vanilla is the favourite Aussie flavour of ice cream.
For every day vanilla as I said I prefer mind Bulla.
For everyone who thinks their ice cream is owned by Australian company and Made in Australia:
“ Formed in 1910, Bulla is Australia's largest and oldest family dairy company. We are celebrating six generations of dairy craftsmanship, with the descendants of Bulla's original three founders still managing the company.”
I know my mother prefers Peter’s and I know some people like Streets. Pretty sure one of Peter’s or Streets is now owned by an overseas company
ALDI used to have a premium vanilla but I have seen stock of it for a while.
I’m yet to find a bad Hãagen-Dazs flavour but their prices at the moment, is far too expensive.
And if someone buys a premium vanilla, yes it should have the black freckles - that’s the vanilla bean.
Something like Bega has vanilla flavouring but it might be one of the few Australian owned ice creams. Made in Colac near Geelong.
I am not 100% certain but a lot of the brand names a lot of us oldies grew up with are owned by overseas companies now. Of the big dairy processors most are owned by overseas companies now. With the exception of Bega who bought Vegemite back from Kraft and Peanut Butter also from Kraft
There are a few smaller dairy processors which like many vineyards around Australia, they sell their product to the bigger players, as it’s too hard to compete with larger producers. Then you find a few smaller places known for their quality - some award winners in Gippsland, King Island, and a few different spots in TAS
These places are smaller volume but have the reputation.
I am curious what other people like.
Ice Confection was a name used years ago and typically it was seen as cheap and not made with dairy. I don’t recall when that was.
There are codes all around the world specifying the difference between Ice Confection and Dairy Ice Cream.
Wiki has some of the info but you really have to do you your research
In the USA they have two different types of Ice Cream and anything that is like flavoured water frozen is considered ice confection but then you have to look at different parts of the world where you find a lot more sorbet or gelato
NZ is one of the biggest exporters of Ice Cream to the world and Aussies and Kiwis (according to wiki) apparently eat more ice cream than any other country at least per person) need to double check that on Wiki I read on a wiki page.
The research I’ve done would seem to agree like this article, there are strict laws in many countries about what can be called Ice Cream.
https://www.icecreamcookieco.com/blogs/news/ice-cream-frozen…
There’s lots of pages about the different styles of ice cream, the the countries where it is popular but I didn’t find a lot of info on Ice Confection except that food labling laws have to be very specific because a lot of ice cream has Gluten in it,
The first Ice flavoured drink goes back as far as 2nd Century- when they discovered adding salt to ice could drop the temperature below freezing that’s when things really kicked off.
Seriously I had no idea that was so much info on Ice Icream and I’ve barely scratched the surface!
For ice coffees I've found Peters to be the best :)
Try Kapiti Vanilla Bean from Aldi.
Love it.
How does this rate against Hagen dazs salted caramel?
Can’t say, but I love salted caramel and hopes were high for this but didn’t like it. My opinion only but the Coles sc is so much better
Okay will skip this.
I've always enjoyed the Coles branded salted caramel too!
i liked this one much better than the Coles, especially the added butter scotch bites in it. Was waiting for a deal on this.
Taste aside, the quality of hagen dazs and ben n jerry's doesn't compare. They're premium ice creams, much thicker, richer. This stuff is fluff in comparison.
Interesting article on vanilla flavoured ice creams' comparison: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/nov/16/australian-supe…
Havent tried the top 3 of that list, but of the few vanilla flavors i have tried, love Connoisseur Classic Vanilla. Probably should try others (Kapiti, blue ribbon etc).
I would recommend the aldi vanilla bean for sure
@[Deactivated]: I'm sure he means Kapiti which afaik is an aldi only brand that is NZ icecream
@Jofzar: Thanks.
They went by taste and didn't look much at the ingredients at all….
Saw that when I searched vanilla reviews a few months ago. Grain of salt stuff for two obvious reasons: (1) they had the products in front of them, with the ingredient lists; wasn't - and wasn't pretending to be - a blind taste test; (2) taste buds vary hugely.
Got some Haagen Daas for 70%, even that was too much. Its still in the freezer. The kids wont even eat it.
Murray St and Connisuer are pretty good
I wasn't impressed with this brand, and I tried 3 different varieties. Kids did not complain though
Very average product. Would not buy even at this good price
I stopped eating this ice cream as soon as they stopped making the churro ice cream
Was just about to ask about that. I've tried to get that flavour every time they've been half price and am yet to find a Woolworths nearby that has it..
Is that the best flavour?
is this or kapiti better? Have enjoyed the kapiti so far.
Kapiti, easily. Growing up in NZ, Much Moore was one of the budget icecream brands, Kapiti was always viewed as the premium brand for icecream. Alongside movenpick and haagen daas
Tip top ice cream is still my preferred though - not as nice as Kapiti though. Shame you can't buy it here.
Please sir
I want the churros but its not available
This one is pretty decent, compared to Peters or Bulla etc, it's probably a bit better. Honestly a lot of these ice creams are so heavily whipped with air, that if you left it out on the table and let it melt a bit, then put it back in the freezer you'll realise you actually only got 60-70% contents and 30% air.
I haven't had any Sara Lee in a while, but they use to be pretty good and was genuine with their contents.
Any dairy out of NZ is top notch…that's why I only bother with plain label butter as is NZ. from guaranteed grass fed cows.
98% of Australian butter is from grass fed cows.
This is so overrated - I’m surprised it gets so many upvotes considering the comments are almost all saying how average it is.
Have only had the boysenberry but I agree, this is not premium ice-cream if that's representative of the line. Haven't bought, and won't buy, again.
The cookie dough was so good but they canned it
I just checked the ingredients label. Why do they need to add vegetable fat / oil ? I'll pass this one.
Those ingredients act as emulsifiers and thickeners, also it helps to extend the shelf life of the ice cream… To make ice cream with just milk and eggs is actually not easy all, the biggest problem is the shelf life, as it will not last long.
Thanks for the explanation.
The ingredient list from a Haagen Dazs ice cream does not use any vegetable fats / oils / thickeners / gums here.

I got to know on one of the ice cream forums that only Haagen Dazs is using simple ingredients, because they can, they are using patented technology, believe it or not, where It changes molecular structure for their milk and cream, sort of like TetraPack. it looks simple to us, but at the production level it is not that simple…. Even all premium Australian made ice creams use some sort of gums in them.
What has happened to society when plain chocolate isn't available….
This with Milo would be amazing!
Ever slightly off topic, but who makes the best vanilla icecream (from a supermarket) these days?
I generally go for Bulla, so not sure if I am missing out on something better??
