    Shhhhh

  • What is this for?

    • +13

You can download Linux ISO's and use it as a discussion board.

I definitely don't use it to download anything I want at 11 MB/s

      • +1

I download about 6 gb of Linux iso's a night.
        And I'm not sharing/uploading.
And it's very hard for my ISP's to prove that I'm download TV shows, even though they suspect that's what I'm really doing.
But I'm not….honest. That would be wrong.

        • If you are using SSL its impossible for them to prove it.

They can "guess" if you are not using SSL for your Indexing site or your pushing NZB's to SAB without SSL.

But if you are using SSL on both its impossible.

        • You could possibly be pursued if the usenet provider's records are seized, but I don't think that's ever happened. Even the people who were download-only on MegaUpload haven't been pursued as far as I know.

        • Thats only assuming the provider has kept logs.

Also the fact that nobody in the world has been pursued for downloading yet, lets not think that someone in Australia will be the first…

        • Yes, the odds are extremely long.

1sti rule of usenet, we dont talk about usenet.

… in anycase, Astraweb has a $20/3 month which beats this offer by $1

      • That astraweb plan is limited to 10 Mbit/s and has 20 connections. This one has a max of 50 connections.

        • How much faster can people get than 10Mbit? I think I can only get 1Mb on ADSL2

        • If you can only get 1Mb then it's not ADSL2+. They can't legally call anything under 1.5Mbps ADSL2+.

        • Yes I think you are right. I was just told that it's 1MB not 1Mb I get. So that would be really 10Mbit's, which is about 1MBite.

In that case, probably best just to keep the unlimited DSL as I pay a lower price that is no longer available to resign onto.. in case speeds pick up, or in anticipation of fibre.

I got a TB through Astraweb… Works great, so many Linux ISO's

      • Thanks for the info, I have the Unlimited DSL for $10 a month. But might be worth switching since I can't get over 10Mbits anyway .

Do you know what DSL is, is that unlimited download speed? Is that the only difference between the Unlimited DSL and 10Mbit/s plan?

  • How does this provider compare to AstraWeb?

  • Astraweb's faster for me (Telstra Ultimate Cable)

    • +1

      good to know

Wish I understood Usenet. But I just can't seem to bring myself to learn what it's all about.

    • Same - I always look into it, but then realize I only do about 10GB of downloading a month if that. Most the stuff I do have I don't even look at

      • Yeah I guess that's what it is for me as well. I download probably around 20GB or so a month and don't really have any troubles using the normal channels. I'll save my brain space for other important things haha.

  • Astraweb is faster for me too (Exetel ADSL2+).

Astraweb goes corrupt when USA sunday night Tv shows are out. The server cannot handle load and speeds plummet.
This is for other countries as well. I have been with another company that capped me when i hit over 1TB for the month. How to be certain these folk wont do the same. I joined newsdemon yesterday and left astra.

Can you tel$tra people quote actual speeds rather than saying astra is faster?

    • If you have Telstra Ultimate Cable you need a lot of connections to get 100mbit.

  • Astraweb is fast, but it gets lots of DMCA takedowns.

    • All US providers get DMCA takedowns.

  • Astra was always the best, but it seems they are probably getting a bit large now so speeds have dropped - and sometimes reliability is also an issue, I left last month after a trial with News Demon.

Last month before switching I was getting 3.5MB on Bigpond Ultimate Cable with astra US SSL, much less on EU SSL, now with News Demon I get 9.5MB to 10MB still on Bigpond Ultimate Cable. Which is plenty fast in my opinion, and worth the extra couple of bucks.

Anyway staying on topic, I like redundancy - plus I may be interested in subscribing to run on an alternate premises, does anyone have actual D/L speeds for Bris with news group direct?

    Finally a non-affiliate usenet post.
    Thank you

I'm currently using newsgroupdirect on a block plan (2TB). It takes me pretty much 50 connections (which is the maximum allowable connection) to max out my 100Mbit Bigpond Ultimate. Even then it doesn't stay at the maximum speed and seems to fluctuate. Other providers I've used (i.e. Easynews) only took 20 connections to max out my connection speed.

I've also noticed since switching to newsgroupdirect that they have a higher number of missing articles which is something I didn't come across as often when using astraweb or giganews.

Personally I'm looking to switching to xsusenet when my NGD block plan runs out.
It works out to be about $8.20 per month if paying quarterly and is even cheaper if paying semi-annually or annually.
The reason why I'm looking to xsusenet is because they allow up to 4 IP addresses so you can share your account with family or friends.

    • Thanks for the info on the speeds, and the tip on xsusenet, looks like it could be the option I am chasing.

  • What is the 30gb of online storage? Is this just some dropbox-esque storage solution they have bolted on as a value-add or something more elaborate?

  • I was considering signing up for this for the first time, but i am a little worried about entering my street address and credit card details.
Has anyone had issues with putting this personal information in?

  • go with Astraweb unlimited 3 month/$20 which is slightly cheaper if your line speed is not above 10mbit/s. Then buy a blocknews block as a fill server $14/100gb which should last till the end of time.
I have not found a incomplete in years.
