Netflix Turkey Membership Cancelled on 24/02/2024 - Are You Also Affected? Vote on Poll

Hi all, a lot of people in the netflix turkey thread is saying their membership has been cancelled but did not specific the payment type.

I am trying to determine what the criteria of membership cancellation is, please vote only if you are on Netflix Turkey

Error if your membership is cancelled

Sorry this account is no longer active. Please sign up again or sign in to a different account.”

EDIT: Official "story" provided by netflix:

As per checking To protect members against unauthorized charges, we sometimes cancel accounts that show signs of unusual activity. It looks like your account was canceled for this reason.

They will even recommend you dispute charge via your card company to get a refund as they did not provide you with the service you paid for. So everyone go and get your money back and then buy Turkey Gift Cards ahaha Personally I recommend turgame 200TL gift cards if you order after 5pm they will arrive pretty fast.

Not cancelled yet on MC card, but maybe make the poll revokable as that may change any day.

    • +4

Done, I've updated it to be revokable

      • +8

I spoke too soon, got canned now. No email.

  • +2

Looks like the majority of cancellations are people on credit cards

    • +3

yeah overwhelmingly - will probably wait ~24 hours and see what it looks like to get a better idea but I think gift card only is the way to go for all future sign ups

    • +2

2 cancelled, 2 working on gift card. subscription on gift card has a 50% chance of working,
109 cancelled, 2 work on credit card. 1.8% rate of working.

Not clear if they are just checking geo location vs subscription. And putting a higher weighting on folks not streaming from Turkey IP addresses.
Maybe if you VPN into Turkey and watch from Turkey for a while, it may keep you active.

Gift card would almost be impossible to refund.
Maybe after a full billing cycle of 30 days we would get a better idea, as they would probably block gift card subscriptions after or close to expiry..
Better learn some Turkish swear words and throw around Turkish consumer law on the chats (whilst VPN'ed in)…

      • I re-join it after they cancelling mine 2 days ago. I have to use Netflix gc to make it works. However, when I want to continue the program I was watching before the cancellation, I MUST use VPN Turkey, otherwise, it flow an error and can't watch anything. Does anyone has similar issue after re-joining?

        • Yes, that's normal.

          • @Mistredo: Normal that I now have to use Turkey VPN to watch? Is that because I just re join due to their one sided cancellation? Is that perm or only for 1 or 2 months? I never need to use VPN to watch in the past. Thanks

            • @JCRALLYART: Just for ~30 days, this is normal and would have also happened when you joined TR netflix for the very first time.

              • @CodeXD: Thanks!

              • @CodeXD: I too signed up again, but am now finding I can only watch through VPN set to Turkey. That's fine for me, but not the rest of the family.

"Just for ~30 days, this is normal and would have also happened when you joined TR netflix for the very first time."

Are we sure that's the case?

I've cancelled the Turkish Netflix, but can't sign up as AU until that expires. If I maintain the subscription on the hope that the VPN requirement goes away after 30 days—and that's not the case—that I'm stuck on it for two months.

                • @pedantique: We will never be able to confirm the post 30 days geolocation requirements until someone goes over 30 days, and more realistically 60.

                • +1

@pedantique: I went back to check and looks like geolock was introduced around mid 2023 mentioned in this post. So if you had signed up before then you wouldn't have gotten it, however, all new Turkey subscription has had it ever since.

                  FAQ
Q: I just signed up and when I go to watch something I get the following error: "Your account can't be used in this location"
A: It seems like every new sign-up to Netflix Turkey is subject to a local restriction lockout. This can take anywhere from as little as several days to 30 days. There are many reports from OzBargainers and others reporting this error disappears within 30 days. During this lockout restriction, you can still watch shows and movies, but you must use a Turkey VPN to do so (otherwise the error will pop up). Since this is only temporary, it shouldn't be a problem after 30 days or so, andthis small hassle is well worth the savings.

  • +3

I just finished watching a movie, then went to watch something else and got the error.

  • +3

Cancelled was cc, no refund asked via chat.. told me it was unusual activity, I asked what kind, they responded " We are sorry, we sometimes cancel accounts that show signs of unusual activity."

    • So what's the outcome?

      • +6

they told me to request refund via my finacial instituition, they not willing to re-instate my netflix

        • +2

had the same here. (to ask my finacial institution)

  • +11

frustrating - was watching drive to survive s6 and Avatar just yesterday.

They also billed me on 19 Feb and just cancelled my access like that? surely they can wait until when my paid subscription actually ends. jeez.

    • +1

      Yep same here …

    • +2

Same here, billed on the 19th and then cancelled.

      • +3

I was billed but called and got a refund
Told them I was living in Turkey but on holidays in AU visiting family.

Dude said I need to sign up in local currency. I called him out for bullshit as there is no T&Cs for this while traveling.

So he caves and refunded me.

My Nigerian account also got cancelled.

  • It looks like mine got cancelled as well, and asked me to restart the membership thru the browser.

    • restart as in pay again?

      • they've georestricted my account so I can only login via Australia..outside "account not recognised"

  • +9

Was charged for a month on the 19th.
My account is used by 4 households on 3 continents. I don't find that unusual.

But rude to cancel without any communication or refund. May do CC chargeback.

  • Yes mine cancelled today

  • +2

Yep, took my payment a week ago but cancelled it today.

Called them on the 1800 number and they processed a refund for me but wouldn't reactivate the account.

    • Yeah same here took the payment and was cancelled

  • Cancelled, annoyed, what now ?

    • +3

CC chargeback is a good suggestion above

    • +1

      Move to Turkey

  • +6

Had a Turkish membership for a long time. My account was cancelled today.

I am going to initiate a charge back for my final monthly fee given I am not receiving the service I've paid for.

    Who is with me?

    • +2

See my lengthy post below. Netflix chat told me I need to do a chargeback which I did.

    • +52

Hahaha had a Turkish membership, saving $10-15+ for a 'long time', and initiating a chargeback over losing, what is the Turkiye Netflix cost, $6 or $7?

The entitlement from absolute tightarses knowingly gaming the system. Just cut your losses.

      • +7

I think you're the tightarse of you didn't get the premium sub at $10.

      • +4

It's unreal isn't it.. how tight and entitled these character's are ffs.

      • -8

I've had legit Netflix from Day 1. Since then the price has doubled, the content become much worse, and my wage hasn't moved.

I don't think your "entitlement", "tightarse", and "knowingly gaming the system" comments have merit.

        • +11

What are you on about? Netflix is a paid media service, not a essential service or utility. If the quality is bad and the price is high, you can simply not use it, they have no obligation to provide value based on your tastes and personal income. Then you don't get to watch it. They clearly don't need you as a customer if you don't even pay full price, otherwise they wouldn't be booting people right now.

Pretending to be from another country is clearly gaming the system. You have to use a VPN, FFS.

You're saying there's no entitlement after making an incredibly entitled statement, it's kind of stunning.

If you can't afford it, you don't get to watch it, like any other paid media. Do you protest outside Event cinemas on the weekend? I want to see this bizarre attitude in person.

Like I don't even have a problem with this hackery, but pretending you've got some moral right because you don't get a raise is just wild.

          • -6

            @Minimum chips:

            What are you on about?

Which part of my post confused you? Australian Netflix price rose ~250% since the start. Legit Australian subscriptions paying full price wouldn't have to convert to other countries if it wasn't for Netflix feeling entitled to their income being raised. The reason Netflix is cheaper in other countries is based on income yet you don't appear to be calling them out.

You are privileged to be in a position to be able to blindly pay 250% of the price for the same good/service you previously bought and not question the value or even care.

            • +5

@Guybrush57: Plenty of other subscriptions have increase since their release, it's really not a shit tonne of money compared to what else Aussies spend money on. You cant really compare to the cheapest countries, as you aren't living there and getting paid in that currency. Anyway in reality it's only twice as much as Turkey now.

It's just that people are used to these cheap hacks and now having a hissy. Just get over it, simple enough to either use it or don't, and get on with things.

      • +18

Why do you protect Netflix so much? They outsource their customer service to cheap countries, they barely pay any taxes in Australia, and yet when we try to save money we are the bad guys.

          • +1

@G-rig: Haha, I’m sure they’re paying taxes in Ireland or somewhere, not here.

        • +6

Arguing whether Netflix is good, pays enough taxes, or is value for money is intentionally missing the point. I'm all for taking back power from a company imposing "the Australia tax" and finding ways to pay way less for it, but throwing a tantrum to recoup ~7 bucks after already saving hundreds of dollars by knowingly skirting their terms of service is, frankly, entitled degenerate behaviour.

You're not owed anything. Grow up and accept the most minor consequences of your actions.

          • +5

@jetblack: Haha bravo, I agree. I've just lost my Netflix service and a few dollars, but I am not going to chase down a few bucks when I knowingly was breaking their terms, that's on me. I've saved plenty, now they are cracking down, as a good business should, time to move on.
If people can't afford it the right way, then it's not for them, it's not a necessity like water & electricity FFS.
I swear there is a lot of child-like entitled behaviour here, it's perplexing.

            • +2

@SimAus007: Exactly, some people have lost the plot over all this, haha. Chasing up multiple charge backs is a waste of time, people should wait till there's an easier work around, or make alternative arrangements as suggested in this thread 😜

        • +2

I'm not saying you're the bad guys, but I am saying it's hypocritical to try gaming the system, and then cry about it when the system stops you from gaming them. Maybe you personally aren't upset over it, but you can see that there are plenty of others in this comment section that are.

      • +1

Do you know what forum you are on?

  • Anyone had luck resubscribing with VPN?

    • +8

I resubscribed with TR gift card and now region locked

Your account can't be used in this location. For more info, go to help.netflix.com
      Error code E114

Don't know if they're cracking down on this region lock but hopefully will be able to watch stuff without VPN after 30 days. Will report back

      • +2

Where's the cheapest place to buy Netflix TR gift card? cheers!

      • Is that screen shot from a PC?
Were you accessing Netflix over a VPN?
Same boat of account signed out, but fam mostly watches on a TV/Tablet - which isn't on a VPN - so dont know if I want to go the GC route.

      • +1

But yeah, same thing. I reactivated my account using GC this afternoon, GC went in and account reactivated but is not geolocked. Same message appears when trying to play something without VPN on.

      • when you said you resubscribed, did you add TR gc to your existing account
OR create a new TR account with VPN?
        Thanks

        • +3

Added TR gc to existing account that lost Netflix membership

I jumped on Turkey VPN and then went to

          https://www.netflix.com/YourAccount

Clicked redeem gift card and it took me to Netflix tr site to redeem

    • I wasn't able to sign in to Turkey anymore over VPN. Might need to make a new account to do that.

      • I resigned up with gift card

        • +1

          Using the same account?
I want able to sign in with mine. Where did you get the gift card from?

          • +1

@alexeiw123: Yep same account, VPN'ed to Turkey and applied gift card to my account and picked the plan

            https://www.netflix.com/YourAccount

Where did you get the gift card from?

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14993984/redir

            • @CodeXD: And you can watch it straight away ?

            • +1

@CodeXD: Gave it a good crack,
Signed up at turgame and attempted to buy a card twice, but payment wouldn't process.
Was able to get a turkish gift card from G2A and redeem it.
But netflix wouldn't let me redeem it, it kept showing the price in euro at the ro-en website. Might need a different VPN?
Now I'm not able to sign in to netflix while on VPN through turkey

              • @alexeiw123: Yeh that'd be the VPN, Netflix is not seeing the ip as Turkey I'm guessing.

                • +2

@scud70: yep - switched from one vpn service to another and got it active again.

                  • @alexeiw123: So question is can you load more than one gc at a time or you'd have to do it every month?

                    • @scud70: Looks like you can load more than one. I did a 200 TLR then realised I needed a bit more, so added a 75.

                      • @alexeiw123: Wait. The gift card trick worked and you have Netflix working?

                        • @crackman: Yes, for now. But I get a region blocked message unless I'm on VPN. Too many hurdles for me once this expires.

        • Managed to log in and added gift cards and account is working again like Codex

    • +2

I tried with CC, then it prompted me for 2FA via a Turkish mobile I needed to enter, I'm sure there is a way but can't be bothered atm. 5 years via .tr was a good run

      • I went through many many hoops to get and enter an SMS code to validate my payment method. Finally got it working, but still geoblocked. I can watch on device with VPN, but not from TV (no VPN).

  • +4

there's only ever 1 or 2 shows at a time on netflix that i wanna watch anyway, usually less or none. they picked the perfect time to axe my membership this time though with DTS S6 and Avatar being aired now. I'm sure this timing is no coincidence and it's been thought through by netflix to get people on to legit aus subs. i'll give this win to them for my past 3 years of 'exploitation'. i'll be going back to my old sources. forget netflix.

    (report from deal thread)

Well my account was also just cancelled.

My account just had the signed out message, and then asking me to sign up again. I was last charged 3 days ago. They told me I need to initiate a chargeback, refused to refund me.

Chat with Netflix for the LOLs.

As per checking To protect members against unauthorized charges, we sometimes cancel accounts that show signs of unusual activity. It looks like your account was canceled for this reason.

    G
Unfortunately, we're unable to refund this transaction. Please reach out to your financial institution and request a refund directly from them.

    G
So for this reason the account was cancelled Thank you for your kind understanding for the situation.

    Gaurav • 12:50 PM
    That makes no sense?

And why would I need to contact my bank if you only just charged my account?

Can you advise what unauthorised activity you are referring too as well?

    12:51 PM
    G
Unfortunately you need to raise a dispute with your bank and they would be able to refund you

    G
While Netflix is specific to region/country due to content licensing and currency of the payment. We have noticed the activity on your account does not match the same & this activity is not aligned with the practices to the country you are in.

I'm an international student? Am I not able to move around the world?

    12:53 PM
    G
    I do understand

    G
But if server detects any unusual activity

    G
To protect your account it will cancel the account to keep it secure

    Gaurav • 12:55 PM
To protect my account. You cancel it? That makes no sense.

Unfortunately if the server detects then the account will be cancelled

I would like to speak to your supervisor. I'm not sure if you are understanding my concerns.

    12:57 PM
    G
I did understand the concern and in this issue even our manager would be giving the same info as i did

    G
Thank you for your kind understanding for the situation.

    Gaurav • 12:57 PM
At least process my refund. Why are you inconveniencing me further with having to initiate a charge back?

    12:58 PM
    G
As a merchant Netflix has identified the activity on your account does not match with the rightful practice of Netflix, we will report this activity to your bank also when they connect with us for any disputed charge.

    G
The rights to refund will remain with your bank as the account was cancelled due to unusual activity, which Netflix will not be able to refund directl

My convo was similar and same outcomes ..also charged 2 days … Seems everyone recently charged

    • I'm guessing they know we can't sue them in Turkey. By VPN.

    • +27

To protect your account we cancel it.😅 That's like a bodyguard saying to protect our client we have to kill them.

    • +1

To protect members against unauthorized charges

So they're suggesting that they think it's stolen CC and are still refusing to refund?

No skin in this game, I just steal content now as the streaming services got too shit. Just seems a bit dodgy the way they're wording it. I know everyone knows what's going on and the later stuff about content licences etc is their real problem.

      • So they're suggesting that they think it's stolen CC and are still refusing to refund?

Crazy isn't it….So they think it was a stolen card that was used and charged, so cancelled the account, but keep the money and not bother to refund back to the stolen card.

        Great work Netflix!!

    • That's fair. It was unusual activity changing countries and VPNs.

  • Anyone tried resubscribing using gift card?

    • I did, GC went through and account is active again but unfortunately account now is geolocked.

      • How long is it geolocked for? 30 days?

        • +1

          Until your account is active.

          • @aphexx:

            Until your account is active.

Well it is active as soon as you take out a subscription :)

Thought seems to be 30 days.

            • @JimmyF: Just don't touch it for 30 days.lol

              • @G-rig: Thats what I'm thinking…. But that would mean paying 2 months of netflixs to find out.

Looks like turgame is borked…. getting a "The project's quota for this operation has been exceeded." when trying to sign up and verify my mobile.

  • anyone know if Netflix India still works as intended?
