Is it Possible to Get Rid of Buy Now Pay Later Accounts?

Zip is easy, you contact to delete and you have to reapply.

But Afterpay you just press a button to disable and you can just reactivate. There doesn't seem to be an option to delete?

And PayPal in 4 doesn't seem to have any way to remove the option from your PayPal account at all?

This is a genuine issue if you ever go for a loan, they'll see you have these accounts and it will be somewhat of a negative when assessing your borrowing capacity

They won't see you have these accounts.

As long as Afterpay is disabled and you have no transfers to Afterpay I wouldn't care. But otherwise I am sure you can contact them at get them to fully delete your account.

    • I went for a mortgage with $2200 of afterpay debt that I ignored because the Vendor sent me the wrong item and never sent the correct item.
Debt collectors contacted me once about 6 years ago and that was it. They didn't do credit checks back then (not sure if they do now) and it never affected my credit score. was a non-issue and still doesn't reflect on any checks done against me in terms of loans, credit cards etc as I churn regularly and have a mortgage.

    • They brought up my partner's afterpay account and my latitude pay account when we went for a mortgage. Both had a balance of $0 and hadn't been used in years. All we had to do was close them and give proof that we had closed them and there was no outstanding balance.

Funnily enough, I had an active afterpay account with probably $1000 owing and a Zip account with nothing owing, but neither of those came up.

Now it makes sense why Afterpay keeps reporting an increase in users year after year.

  • After pay you need to close via the Website
    https://help.afterpay.com/hc/en-au/articles/217426186-How-do…

With PayPal, I think you just pay off the balance. I have never used it , never applied for it, but its always there as an option.

For AfterPay, as per their Customer Privacy Policy:

You have the right to ask us to erase your personal information, and where personal information is made public, to inform other controllers of your personal information to erase your personal information where you have a lawful erasure right.

So I'd suggest sending a formally worded letter to them, email and snail-mail, asking them to erase all your personal information. Send it to:

    [email protected]

    Afterpay Australia Pty Ltd
GPO Box 2269, Melbourne, VIC 3001, Australia

    • “Have the right to ask” - unfortunately under the privacy act, they don’t actually have to comply. That wording is super slimey

There is no “right to be forgotten” law in Australia yet - but it is under consideration. Until it’s passed, companies have the right to keep your data as long as they can justify a “reasonable business purpose”

        Thats interesting…

Wonder what the definition of “reasonable business purpose” is….

        • Companies don’t get audited on these things, so it’s any reason they think they could justify - if asked to do so.

  • wait long enough and they might deleted itself, like latitude pay

    • I had to close mine a few months ago for a mortgage. Even though you can't use it, unless you closed it, you probably still have an open account with them.

  • It will be easier to change your name, payment info, even gender…
