    Vegan Leather

    Does not exist.

Leather is a strong, flexible and durable material obtained from the tanning, or chemical treatment, of animal skins and hides to prevent decay.

A vegan is a stricter vegetarian who also avoids consuming dairy, eggs, and any other ingredients derived from animals.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/VULKIT-Passport-Holder-Wallet-Bloc…

Real leather and cheaper too. Putting your boarding pass into a a separate area isn't useful for international travel as you have to produce your boarding pass with your passport anyway.

On the plus side a sim slot is pretty useful but hey don't we all have dual slots or esims these days after buying up pixel 8s and iphones?

      • Looks good 👍

    • +4

i think it just mean fake leather

    • +2

Its obviously not the literal definition, its a substitute material made to look like leather, usually polyurethane, but that doesn't sound as nice to the layman.. Nit picking at its finest I guess.

    • -5

      Here we go..
Fk leather why would you want it. These days synthetics are better and lighter, more eco friendly and sustainable.

I've already got a passport holder and don't see the point spending that much. You can pick them up cheap overseas at the markets anyway.

      • +3

Sorry but synthetic leather has none of the wear resistance of real leather. A pleather wallet will look like crap long before a leather wallet will.

        • -4

Not necessarily, the quality can be good or bad for both.

How often do you Carry your passport around, every day?

Who keeps anything for 20-50y these days, we live in a. Wasteful society and people are slaves to the upgrades.

Would you kill your dog for the sake of a dumb passport holder? It's the same things, cows are sentient beings with a will to live.

          • @G-rig: I was referring to leather vs pleather in general (I though it was self evident given the text of your original post).

I tend to keep things as long as they continue to function as intended and repair them myself if necessary. Isn't it more wasteful to toss an otherwise good pleather item because the surface has completely worn off?

And what do dogs have to do with it?

            • @gadget: Ok, so was I, it was also a general comment.

The relationship is that they are both animals and there are better cruel free alternatives around (but people tend to favour certain species, so it's easier for you to relate).

              • @G-rig: The cow may be a sentient being, i won't dispute that. But when it's dead, it doesn't really care if its hide gets turned into leather: it is dead, it has lost the ability to care.

Vegan Leather is BS. It doesn't exist. Call it what it is: plastic. And don't think it's better for the environment

There are a few disadvantages to vegan leather, especially when compared to traditional leather. First, vegan leather is often made from PVC, which is a type of plastic. PVC is not as durable as leather, so vegan leather items may not last as long. Second, PVC is not biodegradable, so it’s not environmentally friendly. Finally, PVC can be toxic to produce, so there are concerns about the health and safety of workers who make vegan leather products.

                • -1

@Lord Fart Bucket: Yeah that argument comes up all the time, that leather is a by-product of cattle bred for meat. Suggest you look into that, it's certainly not the case typically.

Same goes for the plastics argument.

This is an interesting watch, plenty of facts and links
Is Vegan Leather Worse for the Planet?

I think most people make the assumptions you do.

                  • -1

                    @G-rig:

leather is a by-product of cattle bred for meat.

I think you'll find from an economics point of view, it is much better not to waste any part of the animal. If the hide can be sold, why not sell it? Makes more economic sense.

A video from "Mic the vegan" doesn't sound objective to me. I will spend my time more useful, thanks.

                    • @Lord Fart Bucket: It may not be up to the quality and that's before the slaughterhouse has any interest or logistics in it.

I think it's all assumptions and wind to be honest, and very predictable you won't watch it lol. May as well not make the comment if you can't back up the facts. I could link a few things from the video but sounds like a waste of time too

Edit: all the links are in the description, so you done have to watch the video if you prefer that

                      • @G-rig:

May as well not make the comment if you can't back up the facts.

Is the attempt at roasting humans allowed under veganism?

              • @G-rig: There are laws in Australia that are supposed to govern the treatment of animals (and no I also don't support caged chickens) that are to be used for food etc. If eating/killing animals for food/leather is cruel in itself then by all means label the majority of Australians (and the human race) as such. I doubt anyone would really care except for the mistreatment part.

And the dog example is a strawman, dogs are not raised for food (well, except in some Asian countries). Go hassle the Peruvians about their national delicacy too then.

                • -1

@gadget: People always find the same arguments and fallacies to justify whatever they want.

Of course it's cruel by nature, it's an oxymoron all the buzz words to make people feel better about their actions (direct or indirect). A good example as humane slaughter of animals - they are still killed lol.

Nothing wrong with that argument at all, it identifies speciesism and how people wouldn't kill a dog but would kill another animal. No shortage of food sources these days, it will be more mainstream eventually Aussies are just selfish by nature and not very progressive or willing to sacrifice anything. Same goes for the environment which is directly linked with cattle also.

                  • -1

@G-rig: We'll agree to disagree then. I wish you well in stopping that cruel African lion from tearing an antelope to pieces.

                    • -1

                      @gadget: Again, another tired argument..

For wild animals however, eating other animals is a matter of survival, they do not have the option or the capacity to make a moral choice to avoid harming other creatures. There can be no moral judgement about an act if the being performing it could not have chosen otherwise, and this counts for humans too.

                      • @G-rig: Oh please. Feel free to act according to your beliefs but don't impose your brand of morality on others. I'm done with the argument, respond however you like.

    • +3

Vegan leather and faux leather are the same thing – essentially a fake 'leather' material that does not use animal skin. There is a range of materials that can be used to make vegan leather.

      Source: A leather product supplier

      • -3

        Again, not leather.

Just like vegan beefburgers. Not possible.

        • +2

I've had Beyond (from supermarket) and it does taste pretty good, but I couldn't afford the price as a regular thing.

        • +1

They are just called burgers, I dont think many vegans would buy them with beef in the title.

    • -2

It is a marketing term, it was also called pleather. I seriously doubt vegans call it vegan leather😂

      • -1

Call it whatever you want, it's a leather substitute/alternative.

        • +1

Exactly, amazing how adding the word vegan triggers some people.

          • @Spendmore: Everytime haha. Triggered on Ozbargain shopping ha

    • +3

Yeah vegan leather is the rebranded marketing term for the same old fake vinyl plastic leather we have had for decades.

Ironically instead of using leather which is a byproduct of the farming industry, now they are making fake leather from fossil fuels.

  • Anyone knows can it hold more then one passport? do they have any similar products for family passports?

  • +1

I recently bought the Amazon Essentials RFID passport wallet and it's terrific. Not leather or fake leather but does the job well at around half the price.
Spigen do however make awesome phone cases/protectors.

  • +4

Vegan Leather is a marketing term for plastic.

    • +1

Plastic is plastic, vegan leather is usually polyurethane made to look and feel like leather. Vegan leather describes that in a way that markets the product to a specific niche whilst still putting the point across that it isn't real leather.

      • +2

        Polyurethane is also a plastic.

        • The point is that it is disingenuous to say its just a marketing term for plastic.

      • +1

In trying to criticise my post above you are literally using marketing terms to confirm what I said. Polyurethane = plastic, markets the product to a specific niche (Vegans) = marketing.

        • +1

It can be two things - an accurate description of a product, whilst highlighting a feature important to a certain demographic. A lot of things are "just plastic" but I bet this is the only post you've taken upon yourself to point it out.

  • No moomoo

  • +1

    Look normal price to me

    • Yes, the camels confirm this.

  • +1

I bought one a few weeks ago, definately not leather, but I like what it is made of and I like the texture. Seems like a decent product.

  • -2

    BUT it's $50, tooooooo expensive.

    • Use a ziplock bag then.

      • still expensive.

        • +1

How about used paper bag we get when buying fish and chips?

  • +2

$46.99 on eBay with coupon TOPFEB6.

    • $44 for me with unique 5 dollars off code but still too expensive

  • +2

    Just 1 passport fits…boooo
