Didn't the segway inventor fall off a cliff on a segway? Surely that could have been a sign to wind the company up and never talk of it ever again.

    • Yes, Jimi Heselden, the inventor of the Segway, tragically lost his life in a cliff accident while riding a Segway near his home. On the morning of September 26, 2010, he was using his Segway to walk his dog near Thorp Arch in England. As he reversed the Segway to allow a fellow dog walker to pass, he accidentally fell from a nearby cliff into the River Wharfe. His body was found at the bottom of a ravine, along with the Segway x2 he was using, which was an all-terrain model¹²³. Despite several theories explaining his fall, the reliability of the Segway vehicle itself was never questioned². It's a somber reminder of the risks associated with even seemingly stable and innovative modes of transportation. 🛴

He didn't invent the Segway. He just bought the company 9 months before he died.

      • +1

No, the guy who bought the company died that way, 10 months after he'd bought it. Link (2) says "First of all, NO, the inventor of the Segway PT, Dean Kamen, is not dead!"
I guess he was a big fan of the original Segway PTs/X2SE (The standing up device people at google smugly ride) because the idea that someone would be driving one near a cliff (and trying to walk a dog with it) on a single file path seems pretty stupid, personally.

Segway was aquired by Ninebot in 2015 and they wound up production of the PT soon after. They're considered the best general consumer scooter company, in terms of the track record of certain lines. Scooters like the Max G30 are considered the most reliable and durable in the world. Has self healing tires and is basically weatherproof (They can still function after being in a river). Haven't tried this one but it looks decent, I love my Max G30

As far as the 25k/m speed limit, all scooters sold by authorized resalers in Australia come with some kind of governor, either two pins plugged together under the deck somewhere or controlled by software via app, initially at time of sale. Appears to be controlled via software on this model

      That's a segue about a segway.

Seggs and drugs off a rock and he lost his role.

  • -5

    Seems expensive…

Weren't these selling for close to $1K not that long ago.

    • I think this model has always been pricey, but in general inflation of 25 to 40% has affected these

    • +1

p65? doubt it, maybe the g65 or the f65

      • -4

yeah, might have been the g65

      • G65 Max2. which is actually better than this, since it has suspension, this doesn't.

    • That was when the inventor was still alive. Now he’s dead hence the price hike.

  • -5

speed limit can early be circumvented.

potential to him 48km/h on speed boost after the region unlock

probably the worst thing is no suspension on this model.

    • +2

speed limit can early be circumvented.

That would make it illegal to ride in public.

Our local police have started using speed guns on the tracks following lots of complaints.

sure, I was commenting towards OP's mention:

In Victoria the speed limit for scooters is 20kph, but all scooters on sale are limited to 25kph.

    • Bolt an aftermarket 750 or 1000W mid drive motor and battery on your bike of choice and blow all these losers away.

      • And not legal in any state in Australia

        • Had one for 3 years and never even been looked at twice. The 750W motor is physically the same size as the 250W. I don’t know where you are but where I am law and order is going out the door. What cops are left don’t have time to bother people on push bikes , wearing a helmet and not acting like a dick.

@furiousgeorge: Yeah I love my bafang bbshd 1500W, I leave the traffic in my dust. Never bothered me about getting caught.

I know I would be at fault if I caused a bad accident. So yes common sense and not being a dick to others.

Here's a non GPT answer - There's roughly three classes of scooters. Folded carry ability is really the thing that is tough to get on the medium and heavy class scooters. Range and power mean a heavier engine and battery and a stronger frame to keep the whole thing together. So you have a true premium experience like the Segway GT2 for 4.5k, but the thing is so juiced up it weighs 50 kilos.

I've got a Ninebot Max G30L and a Kaabo Mantis Duo V2 and they ride very differently and suit different places. A lighter class is a lot more nimble for moving around people and crucially for me on work days, folds almost instantly. It's not a huge effort to lift the 19kg G30L up a flight of stairs if need be. However it's a bit gutless on steep hills and lacks the ability to do long day rides.

The Mantis crunches hills effortlessly by comparison, and has 3 times the range, and is a softer ride with suspension. It's also a pig to fold, takes a quite a bit of elbow grease and about 30-45 seconds to do it properly, and isn't fun to carry for long. So I don't generally ride it where I'd have to fold it, it's more of a cruiser.

I think it largely comes down to if you're using it for commuting and you have to fold it and carry it. It's so much easier to carry the sub 20KG G30, depending on how much you weigh you might need more power though. If you have minimal folded carry time you could probably get away with a slightly heavier one. I think one premium option itself is having two different classes of scooter and not having to compromise on the differing suitability. Can go for a ride with other people too, and if one is flat you always have a backup etc. As an aside the scooters below are more example of categories and not necessarily recommendations, I've only ridden and owned the G30 and the Mantis V2

      Light class
      *Short - Mid Range
      *Easy to Carry
      *Quick Folding Time
      *Low-Medium acceleration/top speed

Segway Ninebot Max G30L (17.5kg, sweet spot of performance to weight and value imo. Or the G30P if you need more range. An older model and not really premium though)
Segway G2 (24.3kg) Largely similar to the Max but with more weight on the frame and addition of suspension.

      Medium class
      *Mid - Long Range
      *Harder to carry
      *Quick - Moderate Folding Time
      *High acceleration/top speed

Segway P100SE (32.9kg) This is where you're getting more a premium feel, and sacrificing portability. Just from the picture the folding mechanism looks similar to the G30 so, fast
Kaabo Mantis Duo V2 (31kg) My other scooter, Similar weight, quite a lot more annoying to carry than a light class. Wouldn't actually recommend buying this
Segway P65E (28kg) This is the model the in OP post, it's still fairly hefty but it looks cool, has a quick folding clasp by the look of it. Might actually be a solid pick for the jack of all trades scooter

      Heavy class
      *High Range
      *Very hard to carry
*Moderate/Long Folding time or no fold
      *Very high acceleration/top speed

Segway GT2 (52.6kg!) This seems like you'd basically want to not need to carry it unless it's in and out the boot of your car. Rides like a dream I hear, but I think the weight would still make it cumbersome to foot roll
Rion R90 / Rion Thrust (Extreme performance/Professional racing grade)

      • +1

Thanks for that. Is rion, lion in Japanese? I am looking for something not a commuter, but cross country explorer.

  • +2

The irony of Sydney Mobiles selling these yet they’re illegal in Sydney….

    • I've rode a scooter perfectly legal in Sydney many times 🙃

  • For something that pricey, pretty pisspoor it's got no suspension. The G2 cost around the same far better choice
