Advice on Tailshaft Lengthening for BMW in Perth

I'm doing a manual swap on my BMW E46 and I need to have my tailshaft lengthened by 147mm to account for the shorter manual box. I've done some Googling, got a couple of quotes, and the best so far is $480 + GST at a place called DBS Services in Malaga. It seems a bit steep to me, but I have no experience with this so I'd appreciate some advice.

Does that seem reasonable? Does anyone know another place around Perth that might be cheaper?

EDIT - People are asking about finding a factory manual tailshaft. Yes, ideally I'd do that, problem is my car is a 330, which have a different tailshaft to any other E46 and are EXTREMELY rare in manual. I've been slowly accumulating parts for this manual swap, and in 8+ months of trawling Marketplace and Gumtree daily I've never seen a manual 330 being wrecked in WA. Every now and then one pops up over east but it just isn't cost-effective to post a tailshaft across the country. So, short of a miracle part popping up one day, I'm resigned to having mine modified.

@pegaxs, does Uncle Ian have a cousin over WA way?

A couple of extra thick spacers and longer bolts ought to do it. Or just pack it out with washers.

Holy shit… are you one of the apprentices where I work??

If it's a factory manual box, can you not just get the factory tail shaft from a wrecker?

Is it the same length as a shaft from an oem manual? Can you pull one from a wreck?

A post about shaft lengthening. I never thought this day would come. Thanks Ozb

Thought deals and posts about shaft lengthening were banned.

$500 doesnt sound too steep to me. Its a specialist job and you dont want to skimp on something like a tailshaft.

For $480 + GST I can’t understand why you haven’t got it booked in already. A used one from a wrecker is going to cost you about that much, if not more.

If you are that hard up for cash, may I suggest you don’t start modifying BMW vehicles as a hobby. They turn into bottomless money pits very very quickly.

$480 + GST, does that seem reasonable?

    Yes.

$480 seems reasonable to extend and balance a driveshaft

It's a BMW. $480 would be a good price to get the wiper blades changed :P

  • Take it if they’ll fix the indicators as well

  • Alright, thanks fellas. I'll go with the place in Malaga.
