Alcohol Cashback Deals - What Happened?

For the last few years, it felt like every second or third day there was a cashback deal from CR or SB with 10, 20 sometimes 30% cashback for First Choice, BWS or Liquorland.

Then come Novemeber'ish 2023 it all ceased. What happened? Did they all cease their partnerships with CR/SB? Have marketing budgets dried up in the booze space?

Now that First Choice Liquor, Liquorland and Vintage Cellars aren’t on any cashback provider, these cashback increases on booze will be rare.

    Yep :(

Wait for 20% off coles liquor. It's generally the best way to go.

    • Retailers don't pay excise.

But to have a bit of a rant about that, we're being misled heavily on that tax. As the first set of replies on that reddit post points out, a bottle of Starward Nova is $45 in Japan, $95 here on sale (it's $110 retail). There's $29.23 in excise on it here, about $3 there.

Starward Nova was retail $95 a bottle in 2020, now it's $110. Tax has gone up about $4 in that time. More importantly though, transportation, electricity, storage have gone up way, way more than that so it's a reasonable price increase. Considering inflation the past few years, that's not surprising, plus it's an award winning whisky. But more to the point, they want to break into the Japanese market so they're selling it at a lower margin.

It's like the arguments that tax is making a pint cost $15 - https://www.news.com.au/finance/money/tax/shocking-to-see-15…

Tax on a pint of beer is about 90c, it has gone up about 20c in the past decade. I'm sure the big brewers would love to save million in tax each year, but the small ones get back the first $350k as a rebate anyway each year. It's completely disingenuous to argue it's the problem. It's a small part of it, but if the government cut the tax prices wouldn't come down very much.

You can avoid the excise by buying wine. Fortified wine is rather cheap for how much alcohol is in it.

shopback wasnt paying cashbacks, they admitted to me they where having issues. But didnt fix anything, and they refused to pay out multiple times.

Interesting. Never had an issue myself on any of the alcohol cashbacks, including westpac bonuses.

Generally I found the bigger the Cashback the bigger the margin.
I normally put items in the Dan Murphy’s cart then buy that total in Dan Murphy’s digital cards with the NRMA discount. If you want it delivered you have to pay 1c on an debit card.
Sometimes you get cheap deals at bws Liquorland but you can normally price match them at Dan Murphy’s anyway.
