Returning a Leaky Soccer Ball after 6 Months

Just wondering what the public opinion is on this

I purchased a mid range ball ($80) 6 months ago. Its used about 3 times a month for an hour each time to play 5 a side. It's normal use but obviously given its 5 a side it gets hit into nets and walls. Recently the ball has started leaking air to the point where it needs to be pumped each time its used. It's more or less flat after 7 days since its last use, completely unuseable.

Would it be reasonable to be able to expect to return this to Rebel Sport for an exchange?

Just curious

gets hit into nets and walls.

soccer balls aren't made to get kicked into walls.

    • No wonder I went through at least one a year as a teenager!

You can try, but the reps may write it off as normal wear and tear based on the use of it and reject your claim.

I agree, soccer balls should not be kicked against a wall, this will shorten its life span not to mention the damage it will cause even if it's only been used 3 times a month.

The wall surrounds the pitch so it's hard to avoid, however its made of plywood and has loads of flex. I'lltry my luck at rebel

        did it get a splinter?

That will depend who you deal with at rebel.

      That's not true…

If you don't take the shot, you can't miss…

  • 10 players. $8 each for a new ball. Time saved.

Unless OP is planning on buying a ball from Rebel Sport again. In which case they might as well ask if they can get a refund/replacement because they’re going to be there regardless and asking takes all of 30 seconds.

    • Price isn't the issue. Just curious what the consensus is

It depends on what the ball looks like after six months of use. If it looks mangled, then it might be time to just buy a new one.

Takes 7 days to go flat and is completely unuseable? Just how long do your soccer matches go for?

    • +1

In the age of entitlement, 7 days isn’t long enough. Imagine the pain involved in inflating a soccer ball before a game to ensure it’s match ready

      • +1

You think it's entitled to expect a ball to retain air?

        • -2

After 6 months of using it and kicking it against a wall & who knows what else, you can’t expect it to not have been damaged

he's going to need a good pitch!

Indeed, after all that's the only way to get the store person onside.

If it was deflating fast enough to be unusable during a game, that's a major issue.
Needing to be pumped up prior to a weekly game, less so.
No bladder or tube is capable of being 100% airtight. Sounds as if your ball might have sustained a slow leak.
When I was teaching P.E. in the dim past, had to check all of the soccer balls, footballs, basketballs that were needed for the day's lessons first thing. Topping up varied, some were good, some okay, some needed a fair bit of air.
It was just part of prep, same in your situation, it's part of your game prep.

I've returned a $110 basketball around 6 months that kept on going flat but I didn't use it much (less than 2 hours total) and it looked in brand new condition with the exception of writing my name on it.. Rebel exchanged it with no fuss.

If the same thing happened today, I'd exchange it sooner.

However 3 times a month for an hour each time to play 5 a side is fairly decent usage. After it hits the walls, it will surely have some scuff markets and wear on it. This may reduce your chances.

If they say no, the ball is still completely usable.

    • Thanks for the feedback. Might keep it and see how it goes then

What's your expectation? 1 month between pumps? 3 months?

Are you happy for that perfectly acceptable ball to end up in landfill because you can't use a hand pump once a week?

  • +1

I bought a midrange soccer ball from Rebel last year. Yeah, it needs pumping up before most games. I was originally annoyed about it, but now I just see it as part of the deal. Bought a pump, now it's good as new before each match.

  • Get one of the xiaomi pumps and it will take 5 seconds to pump it up.

Why does everyone seem to think that you can just go buy something, use it for a while and then replace it for a brand new one? What am I missing here? Of course objects will wear out. It's what happens when you use it.

    Yes/No/Maybe.

If the ball looks in good condition, then give it a shot. The worst they do is say no.

But if the ball looks like its gone to hell and back, then yeah nah.

  • is it a Mitre ball?
