Cycle of Electricity Provider Discounts

Hi all,

I was wondering how often the electricity provider switching bonuses (i.e. cashback or gift cards) come around?

Currently getting absolutely ruined by energy australia (39c flat rate + $1 per day supply charge) and thinking of changing to red energy (have used energymade easy).

Basically wondering if i should just wait till a new offer pops up, or just go ahead and change now.

Go ahead and change now. You can change again when a new offer pops up.

    • This. Most providers have no contract and offer no incentive to stay.

Having said that, you could end up in a bit of a cycle yourself. Some providers don't change their rates frequently, and so you could finish a deal and go onto a base rate that is better than most other providers, but since their current offers have that initial incentive for new customers the rate is more attractive than the base deal at the provider you're with at the time.

TL;DR: could result in you having to chase deals more frequently (which if you're happy to spend the time, you'll be directly better off; maybe not so much if you factor in your time spent…)

I am paying $1.32 per day supply charge and 26c off peak, 45c peak.

    So $1 a day isn't too bad.

However, everyone's location is different and grid owner is different. Its pretty rough. I am in VIC part of AusNet.

  • I'm waiting too. I seem to exhausted all my options in the past 8 months.

Ozbargain keeps track of past cashback offer

For example, head to econnecx page, click on cash back link on top, then the clock icon on the right to view historical cashback time. Use that to help you gauge .

DYOR. Past result is not an indication of future performance.

  • you can get cashback at shopback all year https://www.shopback.com.au/red-energy. Other companies also

  • If I churn electricity and gas 3-4 times a year and add 5-6 credit card churns, will this noticeably impact my credit score or future home loan applications? My current score is excellent, so it seems worth it if I can earn up to $4,000 a year by churning.

  • Would really love to see an end to this retail energy "provider" madness… Such a waste of everyone's time having to continually chop and change to ensure we're not being ripped off :(
