Resolved - Upgrade SSD in Microsoft Surface Pro i5 (laptop)

** issue resolved. I am very grateful for the advice. Thanks everyone for your input.

Hi,

I have a Microsoft surface pro i5 (laptop) bought a while ago. The space is 128gb which is filled up to the neck. I have defragged it, removed unnecessary data but somehow it’s still full.

I am looking to upgrade it with 256gb SSD. I have attempted to contact some techies online but they said they don’t work on Suface pros.

I am looking for some ideas on where I could get the hard drive upgraded and the operating system and data transferred to the new drive? Is it possible? I will appreciate any tips.

I have watched YouTube videos. I am certain I can’t do it myself.

Thanks!

No tech with any sort of intelligence will touch that. They're glued together and the price of a replacement screen is more than the device is worth. Buy a new one with more storage or better yet buy something that isn't a Surface that can be upgraded and repaired. Only the Pro 9's have a replaceable SSD. The Surface business is collapsing, hopefully Microsoft put it out of its misery soon.

I thought it has SD card slot? Problem solved

    • No, it doesn’t have a SD card slot

microsoft are one of the worst offenders of this

they wont let anyone upgrade/repair easily.

see if you can insert a microSD /SD card cart slot ?? if so then try getting a ninja stealth drive for your surface model.

if not honestly surface devices are not really meant to be opened/repaired, unless you are 99.99% risking it getting damaged while repairing. (aka better leave repairs to professional)

  • No, it doesn’t have a SD card slot. May be because it’s really old model

I thought all Surface Pros had SD Card slots. The original model released in 2013 does as does my Surface Pro 5 from 2017. It's hidden under the kick stand.

    • ^^ This.

    • I should have been clear, it is a surface pro laptop.I haven’t checked it does not have a SD card slot

Clear? You were completely wrong. It is not a "pro".
Why waste peoples time when you can't make the effort to name the right product?

        • Are you okay?? No need to be rude mate. Your last sentence was not needed!!

It’s a very old laptop. I am not across different models of Microsoft surface products. Not everyone is a hi-tech like you. I thought this laptop is called a surface pro.

Have you tried running Spacemonger (a free program that graphically shows you what it using the disk space, allows you to open that folder, etc)?

    • Thank you so much. Can’t thank you enough for this tip. Very helpful. I found a back up of my old iphone taking up ridiculous amount of space. Deleting it did the trick. Thank you once again.

As far as I know, SP 7, 8 or 9 can upgrade the SSD, not the older one. Just get rid of it and get a new one.
We all know, 128gb isn't for any laptop other than just windows and Office.

I was not 100% sure what model you have, so I just looked up Surface Laptop 5. If you ask me, they need a better naming scheme more than anything, but it doesn't look too difficult if it is the same model.

It looks like MS uploads reasonably easy to follow video on how to take their later models apart to demonstrate the repairability of the models. I would probably look up your Surface device model on YouTube and see what comes up.
