  • Portable 5g modems still feel too expensive compared to 4g ones that can be readily bought on sale or second hand for~$20.

Difficult to justify paying 10x more for that speed increase which most people may not even notice or am I missing something?

    • 4g aldi limited to 150, 5g limited to 250 on plan, that could make the difference for a small amout extra. kills my surfing on 4g.

What advantages does this gadget have over, say, a phone? Which I could also afford.

    • +1

AFAIK, not much other than the 5000 mAh battery will solely be used for providing internet. If you're happy to carry around a battery pack, a 5g phone is better than buying this.

    • +2

Many cheaper phones will be unstable handling wifi for multiple devices/for extended periods. Then again many of the cheaper 4g/5g modems are similarly unstable.

I was running my home network on a phone hotspot for a while & had constant weird network issues. Buying a B818-263 router solved them all. Mind you that's a dedicated 4g home internet router, not a mobile hotspot.

    • Have read about someone who put (something similar) in his day pack when travelling o/s and the rest of his family connected to it with their phones. Me personally, think I'll just spring for an eSim/Sim for everyone.

  • How would this compare to a Nighthawk M2?

    • Never had a Nighthawk M2, all I can say is that my Nighthawk M5 beats this

  • Can anyone recommend something reasonable price with an ethernet port?

  • I've bought it…now to see if it works with Telstra, Vodafone or Optus

    • +1

Works with both Telstra and Optus, speeds are fine when coverage is good (3/4+ bars), abysmal otherwise which is normal anyway.
