  • How would this compare to a Samsung note 9?

    • +6

      https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=12526&idPhone2=9163#diff-,,*

5G, 120Hz screen, better battery life with faster charging. Camera might not be as good as the Samsung.

      • +3

I dont think the screen quality is as good. Even my Note 8 from 5 years ago had a better quality screen than Moto G84

        I had a Note 8,Note 10+ before and now I have S23 ultra and Moto G84

        • Can you share the benefits and use of having two phones? Which one would you recommend as a primary phone? I am using LG V30 only. Ty

          • +1

@amorn: Oh I just wanted a cheap backup phone for the entire family. This is decent and not too expensive. I was using a 8 years old LG G4 as a backup phone and thought its time to upgrade.

            • @techno2000: Oh, we are LG family then :). Mine is 4-5 years old. I heard about lack of updates on my LG V30, although not sure how it WILL impact my phone. Hence, the question. Thank you.

        • I still have a Galaxy S9. I see all these phones and I'm asking myself why would I downgrade on that screen?
S9 has a 3K Quad HD+ AMOLED display with 2960x1440 pixels and 570 pixels per inch.
          I'm open to suggestions.

          • +4

@BoltThrower: Your Galaxy S9 was a premium handset - if you're looking for a meaningful upgrade then look at Galaxy S23, iPhone etc

The phones in this deal are low end models, they don't compete at the same end of the market. You aren't going to find high-end screens and cameras at these price points.

          • +1

@BoltThrower: I find it interesting that the budget and mid range phones of today still cannot match the screen quality of a 6 year old premium phone inspite of having enhancements like 120 hz refresh rate.

But Cpu grunt will match or exceed and probably the camera as well.

Of course, considering S24 or iphone 15 is more than $1200 , this Moto G84 is more budget than mid range.

        Thanks.

I should have waited for one more week!

    • Me too, Amazon was too late to come to the party.

    • I paid 400 for this one :(

  • +2

    Same as this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/830465

In case you want to buy it in installments with PayPal or AfterPay

    • Or just pay in full

Incredible phone, but for that SD695. It really is a sluggish chip - but for this price, phone can't be beaten.

    • +3

Yeah, the chip's giving me pause. That and i'm still considering the Poco x6.

      • Poco x6 nice phone, but the Telstra Volte/VoWifi unpredictability in unrooted Xiaomi phones is a show stopper.

        • +6

Have you ever tried to follow these instructions?

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14313087/redir

A family member's Poco X3 NFC recently stopped being able to receive and make phone calls + texts after the Vodafone 3G shutdown.

After entering the codes to disable the carrier check for VoLTE and VoWiFi, everything started working again.

          • @non-core promise:

            Telstra

Has always been a problem with Xiaomi and Poco phones. There's a pretty long thread on WP, TL;DR is "most don't work".

          • @non-core promise: Holy crap, I've had this issue for the last fortnight and couldn't work it out. I've got a work phone too so just thought 'f' it and have been using that. I've just run this process on my personal phone and it's now working! So weird to find the solution here :)
What was strange was in was able to get it working the other week while I was away, what I didn't realise is that it must have switched me to roaming so was a different network (I'm guessing)
            Genuinely appreciate your help!

        • +2

Where should we buy Poco x6?

  • People need to stop looking at specs on paper and conclude a phone is a good deal.

Got this for my friend at the JB deal and it is just not what you think it is. Oh the camera for a 2023 phone is absolutely junk. You would be better off buying other China dumping crap at this price range and its likely to have a better camera.

    • +3

Do you have any better options for $311 that are local stock with warranty and are similar or better than the rest of the phone?

      • -1

Edge 30 Fusion is around $350 on special these days

      • -1

I am not a pixel fan but the Amaysim deal is quite good, Its not at $311 but then again you can get grey phones at this price (China dumping junk) and take a gamble on the warranty. Good camera, local warranty….. all these cost money!

And trust me the camera….. is that bad!!

    • +3

Yep, I'm never buying Motorola again. Three main reasons from my last OzB purchase (not this phone but I doubt things have improved).

      1. Camera was complete junk as you say. Embarrassingly bad photos for the price.
      2. Only one major Android update at the time since Motorola only does two in total and this was a year after release. Samsung does four in comparison.
      3. The OS was buggy in general. Had various issues, which I saw reported on forums as well and Motorola never fixed them. Also the "Hello Moto" blasting at full volume when powering it on if it wasn't in silent mode might have been the dumbest decision ever made. Made me want to throw the phone at the wall.

The 3.5mm jack was awesome, but I'd rather a better camera and OS so sticking with the Samsung A73 I bought last year on sale which is actually good.

To turn off "Hello Moto", why not just turn off 'Power On Sounds' in the sound settings?

        • +1

Or just leave it turned on. Who turns off a phone.

How does this compare with iPhone 14 Pro Max 1to ?

    • +8

      poorly.

    • +1

      No wonder you are Unemployed.

  • Just bought this phone for $349 from officeworks last week. Not a huge fan of Android 13 but that's not the phones fault.

Unsure if anyone else has the problem, but at full volume, I've found the top speaker to clip/crackle. Supposedly it may be common across all G84's so if anyone else could chime in, would love to know whether to return it or not. Otherwise the only gripes I have are with android, phone works like a phone.

    • this is common in moto g series phones ending in even numbers.

  • Extra $10 off with JB Perks :D

    • JB is currently $349 though?

  • +1

How is the g84 compared to the edge40?

  • How about pixel 6a from amaysim? Is it worth?

  • +1

Grabbed moto g84 via TGG yesterday at $299+$5 delivery (Using cashback https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/830366)

  • Not there anymore

  • Is this the best option for a $500 budget?

    • +2

Poco X6 Pro off AliExpress. You can even get 12GB RAM if you stretch a little bit further.

      Flagship killer specs.

Only downside is Poco/Xiaomi software (if you don't like Chinese software) and no headphone jack.

The budget Motorola phones OzBargain likes are more in the $150 - $350 range.

If you can stretch to $500 or a little further, Poco X6 Pro is a great choice.

      • Got a yellow Poco X6 Pro Global 8/256 for $472.50AUD inc GST
        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006500460799.html
Make sure work in USD - AliExpress Quote in US dollars was US$279 + GST = US$306.90
use MC/Visa conversion of your CC(and hopefully no bank fees - I use 28degrees or Wise debit) attached to your PayPal account. Make sure aliexpress or paypal dont do the conversion or they will take a quick 4% - did this about 48hrs ago. Now the long wait for delivery. This phone seems to have been confirmed to work with Telstra Volte/VoWiFi

        • If it ever stops working, make sure to try the carrier bypass for VoLTE and VoWiFi before throwing the phone in the bin and buying a new one.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14942764/redir

Many phones do have the correct bands to work in Australia, it's just our 3 carriers are all behaving like dicks and whitelisting only a small selection of "mainstream" phones, like Samsungs, Google Pixels, iPhones, etc. If you bypass this check, the towers and phone will work fine for the most part.

  • +1

Thanks for this! I'm a fan of the mid price moto phones and it's time for a new one. Just ordered the Magenta one.
