Apple Express Replacement Authorization Hold

Hey folks,

I've had a strange encounter with the Apple express replacement service, so I've used my debit card to pay for the express replacement device. Usually this charge is deducted from my balance until I return the replacement device back to Apple.

However, on my recent replacement I've already got the money debited back to my account and I have just transferred it back to my savings. There is no pending authorization charge from Apple or anything related to this transaction on my account from what I can tell.

The actual status of the return is still pending. Can Apple charge my card again when it's past the due date to return the product again? (Given the authorization hold is removed and the funds are back in my account?)

    yes

    • Would that overdraft my account when I don't have funds or just decline?

they can put it through as a transaction that will overdraft your account.

        • Not true, depends on the setup at your bank. If your bank doesn't allow overdrafts it'll just deny.

          • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: The question was mostly out of curiosity as to how, when I make a transaction that doesn't have the sufficient funds, the bank declines it. When an Organisation makes a transaction it overdrafts? Trying to understand this scenario to avoid putting my card details into anymore free trials which I forget to cancel.

          • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: isn't it, if there's no overdraft, you just don't pay interest on it?

      • Depends on your bank and debit account type.

Most likely it will be rejected.

Can you imagine the bank chasing up a 14yo with for an overdrawn debit card?

        • yeah because you're legally allowed to sign an insurance contract. apple would just ban your account, and i'm sure that's worth it.

oh idk maybe even disable the device :/

  • Yeah nah

    • Which one is it? haha

      • nah yeah

      • Tbh TLDR but @brendanm below described it very well 😂

Yes they can charge your card again for the preauthorised amount.

  • "I've already got the money debited back to my account" Do you mean, credited back? Debited would mean the money is not in your account.
Oh and yes, they can still attempt to debit the money if you don't return the item, they don't need a hold to do this. A hold is used to test whether the account is genuine and allows them to charge you later (holds only ever last a few days, that's normal).

*Authorisation, not authorization, unless you are living in North America.

  • I want to keep the replacement device as well as my original "faulty" device

    Easier to just say it.

    • Pretty much, got excited thinking I'd make a good Grid frame out of the iPhone parts. Sadly Tim Apple is in-possession of this said device. Will get em next time.

  • Had this happen myself
The money will just randomly go from your card and will overdraw it if no funds. The bank will recognise the previous authorisation. It’s a weird apple glitch but don’t count on keeping the money.
