Best Fabric Protector When You Have Young Kids

Searching online for different ways to protect my fabric couch besides covering it with blankets.

Does anyone recommend any good fabric protector spray when you have little kids (babies/toddlers)?

Mostly concerned about toxicity and preventing against oily/greasy stains like chocolate handprints.

    This will work.

    • Hahaha I might stick to the blankets

Just the Scotchguard spray on from bunnings

Don't worry there's enough chemicals out there that some protectant isn't going to affect it much.

    Hi
Their are two realistic options, one is fluorocarbon based (as mentioned, Scotch guard) and available from a variety of aftermarket applicators….. Excellent for water and oil based protection, but are forever chemicals, and whilst non toxic to user, the disposal can affect the environment.the performance us linked to concentration applied and has been the standard used for many years.

The second is Microseal which is marketed by a US company but have a distributor here. They target this at aircraft seat protection and claim its not fluorocarbon, but the exact composition is unknown.https://www.microseal.com.au/

    • Thank you! I'll have a more detailed look into Microseal

I find the sprays either wear off quickly or do nothing. If you are trying to keep grubby fingers off you could buy washable sofa covers.

It wont stop a heavy spill tho

    • We bought a single bed waterproof underlay for the couch. We then put a blanket cover over it. We had a problem with one of our kitties at one point. Fortunately fixed since.

        fixed since

        Poor kitty :-(

        • Both Kitties are “fixed” :)

Whatever territorial nonsense was causing the issue resolved itself. No more “accidents”.

    • We have a couch with a washable cover. We also have a spare set if it needs a clean.

I would just use the blankets or sheets, no chemicals and saves wear and tear.

      And easily washable!

I know you said besides blankets, but we use this for our kids 😂

Do the kids mind? How do you make it fit them?

  • You could buy a playpen and make them eat their chocolate in there. And get them in the habit of cleaning their hands, buy lots of wet wipes. Wash your hands before and after you eat, drill it into them.

Problem is my kids won't stay in a playpen. More likely I'll end up in there for some alone time

  • Why are you so worried about the couch?

Life happens. I'd say a combination of making the couch a "no go" area for food and accepting that there will be stains is probably going to give you peace at night.

    Or get a different couch.

Just budget to replace your couch when they turn 12

  • IMO you just have to accept stuff will get trashed and budget for a new one when they are well into high school.
    RIP the cream fabric sofa.

  • We have micro seal on our white sofas. We have young kids. It’s been good so far but I’d say the best recommendation is removable covers that you can wash. Our come off …not easily…but a life saver for some of the accidents we’ve had lol.
