Not sure if I've seen black versions of these?

    • Neither has the TP Link website (that I can find).

    • Nothing a can of primer + paint in one can't fix. I've seen a gold version someone did for their interior using self adhesive wrap.

These are unreliable. One of my Tapo P110s failed miserably. It started with occasional resetting (switching off and then on automatically) itself and then suddenly went into a non-stop reset loop. It probably lasted about 2 months. Sent all of them back to Bunnings for a refund.

    • Mine seems to be working OK but I will keep on eye on it. They have 12 months warranty.

I have about 30 around the house and I've had 1 do that, after about 6 months. I replaced it and haven't had another issue since so I'm ok with the reliability personally.

      • +3

Agree. Got these everywhere around the house and no issues with any of em so far. Reliability has been great for me

      • Why do you have 30 ? What use cases are these for?

Ok so you can monitor energy consumption, so a timer for fan?

Just trying to think what I have in the house I need a timer for 🤷‍♂️

You can set up notifications for when your washer/dryer/dishwasher stops consuming power (i.e. finished working) which I find useful. Can also automate to have your exhaust fan turn on/off whenever your dryer turns on/off and other things like that.

Also it's great to just know how much power an appliance is consuming. Not that useful per se, but kind of fun to know that my TV consumes as much power over a week as my dryer does over 2 hours.

          • @wibk: Would only work best if it’s just at the power point but what about if you use appliances onto a power board? Ie my lounge powerboard has google nest, Tv, Amazon fire stick, speaker

            • +1

@prankster: Well, there are also smart powerboards although I haven't had any experience with them. Also, shouldn't be a problem to use this directly on a powerboard, right? Other than being bulky so might be awkward to fit.

Just wait for it. 40% is my KP115 got click of death between 2~3 years mark. And I'm pretty sure P110 are just rebranded KP115.

        • +1

Really? I'm into about the 3 year mark of mine (Kasa and now Tapo) and don't have any problems. And also using about 20 of them.

          • @Chmmr: Your luck is amazing then.
I used to have 5 of KP115. Ripped all of them out after 2 out of 5 failed with click of death after 2 yrs warranty.
I went back to the old HS110 which I find more reliable.

    • Had similar issues with the Meross ones, where one went into reset mode, one had a heart attack, and two still work fantastic!

    • +2

I have around 8 at home and haven't had a single reliability issue so far.

    • Hope mine don't do that as I have 2 in use to reset the NBN connections :(

      • Reset NBN? Why?

Bought white p110 from Amazon a week back, dead on arrival. Flicked on and off about 5 times a second. Replacement has been fine so far,.

Box was rough looking and missing shrink wrap, so suspect it was Amazon shipping me a pre loved one.

    • I've had similar issues with the EKO ones. I bought a few and they failed very quickly.

I have ended up buying Arlec ones which have been very good.

It started with occasional resetting (switching off and then on automatically) itself and then suddenly went into a non-stop reset loop

This is the first sign of failure I have found.

    • Mine failed after the warranty expired. Also I didnt use them for 6 months or so. Dont seem like they are worth it.

Switches arent meant to fail this easy.

buy new one from Amazon - 'oh no its dead on arrival'

    • +1

I've had 3 out of 6 Kasa versions fail within 1.5-2.5 years now. It's my believe these Tapo ones are identical to the Kasa ones apart from firmware. The problem appears to be bad capacitors or relays inside, according to others who've had them fail.

      • +1

There should be a class action of some sort to make sure these guys dont sell us duds. Whats the point of having switches that only last 2 years or so?

    • I've plenty and they're good. What component is failing? the Plug of the smart (wifi) function?

      • All of my failures where the plug itself, just died no lights or anything

  • +1

If you have other Kasa smart devices you can now import them into the Tapo app and control and manage your Tapo and Kasa devices from the one app!

    • these VERY likely all can be controlled by tuya app, all the 'other' apps are re-skins of that one.

getting them out of that and into something with local control is the next level. These are not easy to open in my experience so that is not so smooth. Anyone have easy way to do that…. please share

      • +1

If you use Apple devices checkout Hombridge, the plugin you can get for Kasa devices (I presume it’s the same for Tapo) allows you to control the devices locally via HomeKit without an active internet connection.

      • Not easy to connect to Home Assistant?

      • +1

I believe Kasa/Tapo are TP-Link's own platform and not based on Tuya.

      • these VERY likely all can be controlled by tuya app, all the 'other' apps are re-skins of that one.

TP-Link uses its own proprietary systems, these are NOT Tuya devices.

Having said that, there is robust support for both Kasa and Tapo devices in Home Assistant, so general support for home automation is good.

Was sold out, but have now returned at the price of $47

    • Yep, that's what I'm seeing too.

      • Back at $26.39 again

        • but then won't let you check out

I've got about 10 of these, but so far 5 of them have failed within 1-2 years of use. Just using it to charge my phone and fans. Luckily Amazon is pretty good at refunding.

    • Yup, I have 3 of 6 Kasa-branded ones fail between 1.5-2.5 years of purchase. They seem to have a high failure rate of capacitors and/or the relay inside.

    • Did they refund you since it failed in the warranty period? Does ebay have any such provision?

      • Yes Amazon refunded me pretty easily without having to return , not sure about eBay as you'll probably need to send it back.

        • One of mine failed after the warranty period.

After looking at the negative reviews and constant switches failing after warranty period, I have written to ACCC about this.
This shouldnt happen in this day and age where we are looking to reduce ewaste.

  • Back to $47 now

  • thats cheap

  • +1

FYI I wouldnt buy these switches especially from TP Link anymore. Most of them have poor capacitors which fail after 2 years of warranty period (check reviews and forums) and then you are stuck with a lemon.
