I have a few of these. They are pretty generic, can run on most generic / Tuya apps (I am using mine on the Brilliant Smart app).

Save 20%. Was $15.95.

Probably one the cheapest wifi plug with energy monitoring that has AU safety standards and local store warranty.

Oh, and yes it is slim. You can fit two of these side by side in a standard double power point.

(FYI thanks to @Xizor. See this comment here on how to operate a time schedule scenario : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12408504/redir)

  • Link doesn't work

    • Oops, fixed now

  • Thank you OP, got one

    • I got one as well, are they supposed to make a rattle when you shake them?

      • +2

No rattle in the one I got.

        • +1

thanks, I'll return and ask for a swap.

        • sorry to bother you again,

Looks like one of mine is dodgy, was just trying to load up a game on my pc and the pc bluescreened! (highly unlikely to be caused by the pc itself)

I have a second eko, that doesn't seem to rattle but does your device report 240v in the smart life app (listed below), or do you use their suggested eko app? Both of mine are reporting 230-234v in the smart life app. (Maybe my apartment is for some weird reason 230v, even tho all the safety switches say 240v on them). This second eko is now reporting as offline despite powering the pc I'm talking to you on.

Disappointed in my experience so far :(.

          • +3

@A-mak: You won't find what you're looking for in the EKO plug.

          • +2

@A-mak: 230 V is the standard mains voltage in most of Australia.
I don't really see how the plug could cause a bluescreen!

            • -1

@Yarkin: Power runs through the plug, if it's faulty strange things can happen?

I'm experienced with computer hardware, my rig has never bsod and is very stable. First time I go to load up a game to draw some power after putting on this particular Eko at the wall plug it bsods. I swap it with the 2nd Eko I have that does not rattle, no more bsods. I didn't risk continuing to use the Eko plug that rattles loudly when you pick it up so it -could- have been a massive fluke but I highly doubt it.

I have since taken the Eko that rattles back and swapped it for one that doesn't, big w were happy to do the swap.

Good to know, but it is weird I just tested a wall socket upstairs and that's giving me 240v, but the one downstairs 230-234v and the fridge (which is its own rail) 230v.

          • +1

@A-mak: I use the Connect Smart App with Google home . My one is showing 214-216 volts when connected to a Kmart fan heater.

  • +1

Does it hide the power point next to it?

    • +9

No, it takes one slot. You can put two of these next to each other

  • +1

I bought one of these for similar price when CR/SB has upsized cashback. Can vouch for the quality and it's really easy to use. IMHO this should be more popular than the "bigger" brands.

    • whats the app called on the google play store?

      • +1

I think it's called EKO HOME

        • Cygnette has the ability to download past usage data in csv format, does this app offer the same?

          • +2

@kehuehue: No, you can't download the data from what I can see.

And you only get daily usage history (can view live data too, but that's it)

            • +1

@kickling: thank you, will cancel my order then.

              • @kehuehue: What use would you need for downloading data? Curious as I have the Meross plugs.

                • @xdigger: mining, helps with tracking daily power usage

                  • @kehuehue: Oof.

                    If you're mining at a loss, please don't. :)

                    (Otherwise all power to you)

                    • @Zorlin: Not at a loss yet, all time low, yep, once eth reaches 1k, its time to go offline

      • +4

The best app to use for all these Tuya type devices is SmartLife (10M downloads with 4.6 stars https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tuya.smart…), it works with the EKO devices, Kogan, Brilliant, Mirabella, Aquara and so on. Then everything is in the one app instead of having several.

        • +1

I just got some TP link. - I guess that is Kasa app? Can I get some cheaper alternatives like these, without having to use another app?

          • @JoeSchmogan: TP Link have their own propriety app and hardware unfortunately, it's why i stopped using them years back.

        • I have Connect Smarthome which I guess uses the same underlying framework. Able to add Kogan, Mirabella bulbs and this switch too

        • Wait so this app will likely work with this plug?

        • Can it work with the Arlec/Deta GridConnect devices from Bunnings?

        • +1

You’re correct with all except Aqara, that uses the Aqara or Mi Home apps. Having said that, it may be possible to pair Aqara Zigbee devices with a Tuya Zigbee hub.

          • +3

@Hargain Bunter: Ahh yeah thanks my bad, i have all the Aqara devices in SmartThings not SmartLife.

        • Any benefit/reason to register and log in on the app?

    • +1

Hey Foxes28 I am having trouble figuring out how to set a simple ON/OFF type schedule. eg power on at 6am and power off at 10pm.

I think I need to use the Circulate mode… have you figured this out yet?

      • I think you're right. I have a few of these but mostly use for the energy monitoring aspect, haven't gotten around to trying to schedule on/off a times as the device draw in idle/off state was way lower than i expected.

      • To be honest, I haven't used it yet but looks like Circulate/Random mode would serve the purpose?

        • +1

Yeah. I tried asking for help, there is a way to use circulate but even they can't figure out

          • +2

@kickling: I think how it works is you use the circulate mode. Up the top you select the period you want it to be doing things (i.e. eligible period for rules to turn it on or off), then in the middle you select the days this will apply for, then in the bottom you select how long it will turn on for, and turn off for, within the originally defined eligible period. If just once, set the start duration to the maximum time within the originally defined eligible period up top -1 minute as you need to set at least 1 minute in the end duration. All this nonsense looks to be a monumental brain fart by someone that has forced the cycling/repeat function into the setup of basic scheduling on/off.

As an example of what i'll try to do on the weekend with a grow light that i want to be on for 12hrs a day i will set the top to be 7AM to 7PM, select every day, then start duration to be 11hrs 59mins, and end duraiton 1min.

            • +1

              @Xizor: Riiiiiight.

I'll also try doing the same. I want ON between 6am and 10pm. So for me that's 15h 59m.

              • @kickling: Assuming im right… Let me know how you go!

                • +2

                  @Xizor: So far so good.

                  Turned off at 10pm.

Now to check in the morning to see if it is on.

                • +3

@Xizor: Update. Switch is on this morning.

Looks like you solved the riddle. I might update the post. Thx.

Also a friend tells me that you can use "scenes" in your chosen app to do if/then scenario to control switch times

                  • +1

@kickling: Great to hear, thanks! I might grab a few more if they re-stock the ebay listing.

                    • @Xizor: Bigw do free ship on $100 or on $45 clothing, if you think you need anything else 😉

              • @kickling: What did you set the end duration to be if you want the switch to turn on between 6am and 10pm? I've entered 15hrs 59 mins for start duration but when I try to save it I get an error message if I set the end duration for 8 hours and 1 minute. However when I enter 1 minute it allows me to save. Is the end duration the length of time it stays switched off?

      • Having same issue. Can’t figure out how set time to turn on my heater each morning 😞

        • See the comments just above

    • Agree, it's really good and compact also. Some of the other ones take up 2 spots.

    compatible to Smart Life app?

    • Yes

  • +6

Anyone know if these are tuya-convertable?

    • +1. First time in my experience can't find any mention about EKO devices on blakadder

    • +7

From last time these were posted here:
      "CB2S chip, so no Tasmota"
"How did you find out the chip?"
"I just popped the case open."
      "That's pretty definitive! Thanks!"

Anyone know if these are tuya-convertable?

Not much that is sold 'new' is tuya-convertable anymore, they moved to their own nasty chips that don't work with the open firmwares.

      • +1

However, so many of these devices are cookie-cutter-copies of each other that a simple brain transplant with a physically compatible chip gets them going. Helps if they have normal screws, not too much glue…

unless you have decent skill and soldering set, it's not for starter, the pin heads are tiny, that photo is magnified. For the amount of trouble a sonoff or similar shelly will be a neat and tidy approach.

Yes the WB2S that doesn't flash nicely with the open firmwares does have a drop in replacement ESP for sure, but you need to be able to open the device, desolder and resolder the new replacement ESP module in, then do the firmware flashing etc

Those modules are tiny, the space is tight and most of these devices are sealed shut making the process pretty painful to do.

These Eko/Arlec units are glued shut, opening them pretty much wreaks them.

          • +4

@JimmyF: You may wish to update yourself with up to date information. they can be flashed with OpenBeken.

            https://community.home-assistant.io/t/detailed-guide-on-how-…

            https://github.com/OpenBekenIOT/hid_download_py

i just did 5 of these EKO units, 2 with esp-02 transplants for tasmota/esphome & 3 with OpenBeken (BK7321N). not a drop of glue to be found and very easy to pop open with no damage to the case as they are only held together by internal clips.

            • -1

              @spiritsnatchandomeda:

@JimmyF: You may wish to update yourself with up to date information. they can be flashed with OpenBeken.

LOL Thanks for the negs…. Yes silly me Abdul for not being up to date with the progress on OpenBeken (that not many people have ever heard off before). Good guide you have written BTW.

But checking my notes, yeah this still isn't a flash for tasmota or esphome….. You know the one that the OP was asking about if they work with tuya-convert. So my comments still stand as valid/correct.

not a drop of glue to be found and very easy to pop open with no damage to the case as they are only held together by internal clips.

Good to know, surprised they are not glued shut as there are no screws. Without screws or glue I would have thought that make them non complaint if they can pop open without destroying them. I'm pretty sure my units that look the same are glued shut.

            • +2

@spiritsnatchandomeda: I managed to open it quite easily and can confirm no drop of glue, just 5 internal clips.
Now I just have to figure out how to access the CB2S pins and flash with OpenBeken.

  • thoughts on this compared to the kmart mirabella genio one?

Is anyone using these with HomeAssistant?
I'm using the TP-link ones, and wouldn't mind expanding to a few more..

    • +10

https://github.com/rospogrigio/localtuya will work, from memory they are not flashable to tasmota

I've moved to these, they do power monitoring and work well with both Tasmota and ESPHome https://www.athom.tech/blank-1/au-plug

      • No idea if the Athom ones are AU compliant but the ones I have work flawlessly.

        • the ones I have

Do you mean these EKO ones, and do you mean they are flashable to Tasmota?

      • Do these athom units block other ports?

        • +1

Yes. I bought four but side by side the JUST interfere with the neighbouring socket. I used a couple on an outdoor socket and they fit side by side there. Otherwise the Athoms are great.

      • What's the polling rate like? I've got TP-Link HS110s and get ~10s updates; got some Arlec (Tuya) one's for a relative and they're pretty slow to update, seemingly random rate sometimes taking minutes (maybe due to cloud polling? haven't got them through LocalTuya yet)

        • +1

Much faster than 10s on both Tasmota and ESPHome, I use them to monitor power state of dryer and washing machine and they've been solid

      • +1

Can you flash ESPhome firmware onto them?

      • wow, these look good

      • +2

rip I got all excited when I saw these but then realise the prices are in US$ :/ so more like AU$20

        • +2

Money well spent for stuff that Just Works <tm>

    • +3

dont bother, they are tuya (pain to setup and slow to receive and send data). as others have suggested get an athom plug with tasmota or esphome on it.

      • +1

Localtuya isn't bad, better than throwing plugs in bin

    • I’m using them with Local Tuya and they’re working well. I had to increase the polling to get more accurate data for automations. Having said that my TP-Links have been more of a set and forget.

  • +1

Dumb question but does this only work if you're at home connected to your WiFi or can you be outside of home and still turn appliances/lights on and off remotely?

    • You can use them remotely

  • +4

genuinely curious, what do people usually use their WiFi plugs on?

    • +2

I use it to turn on lamps after dark if I know I'll be home late. Just to make it look like someone's home

    • +4

The energy monitoring ones are especially useful for appliances. Notifications of cycles finished for example.

      • How do you go about doing the "notifications of cycles finished"?

I would like to set something up to be notified when my washing machine is done. How can I get a notification for this event?

        Thanks!

        • +1

I used Home Assistant for that, but you could do a simple version in the Tuya Smart Life app. In either case, first you would have run a washing load with your machine connected to the smart plug. Then you look at the pattern of power used over the wash cycle.

With the Smart Life app, you could base it off once it’s peak power draw (e.g. 100W) then wait a certain time period (e.g. 15 minutes) then send notification. Or when it drops below a power threshold, send notification.

With Home Assistant there are many more options.

    • +1

mine monitors the PC energy use

    • +2

      used it to automate heating

    • +4

I have a similar one on my home PC - monitoring power usage to then claim as part of WfH with the taxman.

    • +1

      Bedroom energy monitoring for me.

I have everything running from one socket sounds a bit scary I have 2 powerboards daisy chained but majority of stuff connected are very low wattage low amp stuff like fans and chargers.

Only my pc draws some energy but from experience no more than 220 watts ever and that includes monitor tower and maybe even a fan or two and a charger hub idling.

It's nice to see my energy use reduce by 90% by only using my charger and playing mobile games and using my mobile for everything keeping my pc off.

Even at idle my energy monitor plug would show anywhere from 60-90 watts per hour which adds up over the span of 24 hours.

I'm using kogan plug and smarter home app.

I have been averaging about 0.25kw per day for over 3 weeks for my bedroom.

Before that it was anywhere from 2 to 4 kilowatts per day and I don't use a heater in my room so that is just pc, fans, charger hub.
