How Would Not Having OzBargain Affect You ?

So, the OzBargain website was offline for about 2 hours earlier today (Sunday 4/2/24).

If the OzBargain site went down for many hours or even days, how would you cope with that "loss"?

What else would you do, to fill that 'void' in your life during that time?

PS: I'm sure this is a poll-worthy question, but I haven't done polls before and more interested in opinions than votes.

Meh. In recent times I've gone close to a week without viewing deals. My purchasing of items from ozb has been lower in the last year than any previous.
Forums on the other hand are worth a read daily
    .

    • So, not having bargains is OK,
but not having Forums would give you withdrawals,
of missing out other people (and trolls) personal dramas ?

  • I just found the 'other' discussion - "What Did You Do When OzBargain Was down?",
and I guess this thread is a Dupe of that (Report To Mods, hah)
    but
I'm curious about the psychological effect of something OzB missing in our lives.

I mean, you'll lose your bookmarks, ability to revisit deals, Terms & Conditions, etc.

    • revisit deals and t and c’s

      Might be archived tho

      • Archived where,…
        WaybackMachine ?

        • Yea

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: WaybackMachine won't have your Bookmarks and Bookmark Folders.

            • +1

@whyisave: That’s why I didn’t quote that part and just the revisit deal part

              • @Jimothy Wongingtons: I understood you,…and my follow up is,
would WaybackMachine allow you to search within a site,
                for specific time-ranges, with filters?

I haven't done it, but I'm just wondering about this now.

wayback machine has about 35-50% of my ozbargain bookmarks archived

ever worried about losing any bookmarks check ArchiveBox can run your own wayback machine also has option to send all archive requests to wayback for additional backup

    • psychological effect of something OzB missing in our lives

I'm sure people will be able to carry on 🤦‍♀️

      • We all carry on,…but at what cost?

Losing a phone or photos or a house being burnt down, all takes it toll on the human psyche.

Some people become more existentialist and nihilistic after loss, and losing a loved website, can be like losing a connection to a person, for someone whose 'human' interactions came from OzB.

It's a new phenomenon, as we get more and more atomized and silo'd into Forums, Discord / Telegram / Mastodon servers,…that losing access can be like a break-up withdrawal or even freedom from a "cult".

        • I think if that sort of stuff means that much to you, you probably have deeper issues to work through.

I took a 2 year hiatus from ozbargain a while back. Ended up arguing with people on youtube instead.

    • A self-imposed hiatus, is will-dependent,
as opposed to the 'shock' one receives,
when the OzB rug will be pulled under your feet.

I'm thinking of the withdrawal symptoms of losing access to the community,
the deals, the bookmarks, the classifieds, … many won't even re-use their same usernames elsewhere.

      • Oh okay.
I only look at the deals if I'm really bored.
I don't buy much new stuff.

    Well there’s always choice cheapies

  • +1

It might be annoying if I'm looking to make a purchase as Ozbargain is a good starting point for deal history. I can generally find a decent price myself and there's 28 degrees if I'm in a hurry.

Also, less impulse buys so maybe a small financial saving.

I guess I'd rejoin some other social media if I missed the forums.

    • How do you find that 'decent price', if you don't have a common site, to find coupons ?
I mean there's Frugal Feeds for food-related coupons,
but what about the the referral links to get the referrer's discounts/bonuses, etc. ?

I don't think there's any place like this site, other than clones of it,
eg. Choice Cheapies, Cheap Cheap Lah, etc.

There's FlyerTalk or PointHacks for Credit Card churns and Frequent Flyer discussions,
but I see OzB acting as an aggregator,…bringing in all those various sites, into here.

      • Dealbot had his Facebook group thing with deals - I don’t follow it though so can’t say for sure

      • In general, I would guess it would be similar to how deals are found. Generally, googling, price comparison sites, eBay newsletters, etc. As an example, I have some 3camels alerts for some items and would have posted them as deals but was beaten to it.

You might miss out on some of the deals which involve stacking offers but there's a strong chance they'd have been impulse purchases if it was just based on a visit.

Losing done alerts might be annoying but it's unlikely they'd trigger in smaller outages.

If it was something where being referred would significantly benefit, I'm sure you could find other forums or Facebook groups. Less convenient, but still doable.

Would probably use Reddit instead 🤢 🤮

    • +1

Yeah, ozb and Reddit are my only two online vices these days, but this one is the only one I actually write on and know familiar characters / players, and ends up costing me actual money, and gets me teased.

Being in the Penalty Box is like solitary confinement. Your mouth is buttoned shut. You question if you are really alive, or in some kind of perpetual, limbo state of meaningless quasi-existence. Your thoughts gradually start to fade until your mind goes completely numb. Is there always hope? No. Is it always darkest before the dawn? Maybe. Does every bridge Penalty Box have a troll? Well, now that’s a truly stupid question…

Education is finite, depending where you get it.

            • @scooba: Education is a lifelong process. Until you get dementia, and forget something new every day

              • +1

@tharlow: Dementia generally affects short term memory, not long term memory.

So the excuse of not being able to remember when a person mastered basic literacy is no excuse. Unless of course if English is that persons second language?

But hey, I’m no doctor or literacy expert who grew up with such sayings as “We’re off she cried as she waved her wooden leg!”

I wonder if it took scotty more than 7 days to create OzBargain…

      • What are the commandments though ?

        • Remember the Black Friday, to keep it holy?

I would have more money and more time.

    • Are you saying that you have an addiction? Or are you saying that an OzBargain Premium Membership is not worth the money you’re shelling out year after year? Does Amazon.com save you time? Money? Is an Amazon Prime subscription worth the cost? If time is money, then exactly how much money is time?

I feel I'd lose my touch with society somewhat, or at the very least be less informed about daily stuff.

    • +1

      That has its benefits.

Id have more money and less cheap arse crap i didn't need.

The land ain’t going to fill itself, you know. Thank you for putting this country on a firmer footing, and also for perpetuating the Ponzi scheme that is the global economic miracle

  • Alternatively, imagine the different types of deals you would see if we were in the USA or Canada. We would then see deals we don’t see here - like guns or ammunition for example - glad we don’t see any here

  • I didn't notice it was down i usually spend less than 10 minutes a day here.

  • I would have to look up hungry jacks promo codes every so often, also Mcdonalds, or the next free epic store game, usually when something is too good of a price it's usually out of stock anyway
