Very Dirty 'new' Tyres Fitted in Record Time - Not Sure They Were New

Major tyre chain A fitted 4 'new' SUV tyres in record time (38 minutes including a front and back wheel alignment). I paid at the counter but on inspecting the 'new' tyres outside I told them I was unhappy with how dirty they were and queried whether they were in fact brand new or whether they had been on the road. Perhaps I was being too fussy about the dirt and dust but the filthy state rang an alarm bell. When I started to think about it, I was also doubtful that a good fitting job including a front and back wheel alignment could have been done so quickly. The little bumps on the tyre surface that indicate whether tyres are new were still visible but past experience is that the bumps do not wear off immediately. Tyre branding and markings appeared legitimate. The staff member's reaction to my concern was that if you don't like the tyres, we can swap your old ones back. I thought for a while and then went in and surprised them by taking up the swap offer. To their credit, they did the swap quickly and refunded the money.

The next day at tyre chain B, the task done in 38 minutes at tyre chain A took over 90 minutes - I was able to watch from the waiting room as they carefully balanced and fitted the 4 tyres and did a wheel alignment and took the car for two test drives in the process. The wheels and new tyres were spotless when the car was handed back.

Having bought a lot of new tyres for self and family over the years, I have never had an experience like the one at tyre chain A. Interested in others' experience and views about what is reasonable to expect in these circumstances.

You’re a fusspot and it’s all in your head /thread

      Yes, complaining about great service!

  • +11

    Really? FFS.

Because it's likely store A are a very efficient team. Tyre changes take bugger all time especially if they are between 15-18" wheels. Balancing can take barely a few minutes per wheel. Wheel alignments, using modern equipment, are quick and very accurate.

What was the tyre manufacturing date on the sidewall of the 1st set of tyres?

To their credit, they did the swap quickly and refunded the money.

Smart shop. Pick your battles because you can't always pick your customers. Likely happy to see you gone.

    SUV tyres

What are we talking here? Don't answer if it's a CRV or RAV4 please.

    Haha. Got some pics?

38 minutes? Thats pretty quick, but doesnt seem out of the realms of possibility, especially if the alignment was already mostly correct.

Just because it takes longer doesnt mean its better.

    • 38 minutes? Thats pretty quick

For one person doing the work, maybe…. Maybe they had 2 or 3 or 4 people doing the work. 4 people doing a wheel each and it will be done in no time. So heaps of time to do the wheel alignment as well in 38 minutes.

The real question is, how long did it take them to swap the tyres back?

      • I'd be pretty happy if they did my tyres in that sort of time. My preferred tyre shop is within walking distance. I often get the vehicle ready message soon enough that I wonder if I should have just stayed there.

Based on the shops response to put the old tyres back on, i can only imagine their opinion of the customer. "Get rid of this one as quick as possible" comes to mind.

Yep! After being in business for a while, you can spot customers that are going to be nothing but trouble. So the shop cut their losses and put the old tyres back on! Keep the customer 'happy' as such! Less headache for them.

As I said, how quick did they swap the tyres over? If it was 20 mins? 40 mins? 90 mins? :)

          • @JimmyF: Thanks for the feedback. They swapped them back in about 20 minutes (no balancing I expect)

            • @Ponsonby: A couple of pissed off blokes could change your tyres and balance your wheels no problem in 20 minutes. Probably even stop for a quick vape at the half way mark.

Yeah of course you don't tell us what the date code is. That would ruin your troll post pretty quickly.

  • +3

ok cool i guess you have been waiting for ozbargain to come back online to ask this

  • +3

    Complete lunatic post.

I've done some tyre fitting at times, very easy to do that in the time specified, especially if your alignment didn't need adjustment.

On Friday I had some loose tyres put on rims that had tyres on them, took them about 10 minutes to do 4.

    • +2

Especially if there are 2 experienced staff working on the one set of tyres. One operating the machines and the other doing all the handling/leg work it can be an extremely efficient process.

  • +2

Thanks. Manufacturing date on two of the 19 inch tyres was early 2022 but could not be seen on the other two.

    • +2

At 2 years of age the rubber sidewalls naturally go brown (blooming) and could appear dirty (as per your uneducated observation). It's just a biproduct of the rubber composition and manufacturing process. Perfectly normal. That's why people clean and dress their tyres - to make them look black again.

      Dodgy source

  • That is really useful info Muzeeb

  • +2

They forgot to put tyre shine on the sidewalls.

    • +10

Then it would have taken 39 minutes and some customers might get angry at the wait times.

    • +4

Op sniffed it all, there wasn't any left.

    • Mixed emotions at the moment. Glad to see a Simpsons reference especially with Wally Kogan yet feeling disappointed that @Jimothy Wongingtons didn't post it first.

      • I was going to timestamp it to homer in the waiting room, but the best jokes are at the start.

      • Haha good episode

Lucky you didn't drive down the pit lane of a F1 race… Would love to read the post from you if they only took 2.6 seconds to change your tyres.

    • You mean wheels, they swap the whole wheel

      • +1

Does swapping the wheels not also necessitate swapping the tyres?

        • -2

Ask yourself that question next time you get a flat tyre on the side of the highway.

          • @reactor-au: Nah, I'm good. Try reading my comment again and get back to me when you understand.

  • +3

Now I understand why tyre places always spray tyre shine on the new tyres. That's the only way some people can tell they're new lol

    • -1

Dealt with this type of customer too much. So spray them up to look 'new'.

  • "The little bumps on the tyre surface that indicate whether tyres are new"
    aka chicken strips
    .

  • In my youth one of my jobs was a tow bar fitter.

We needed the car for a minimum of one hour for one person.

Best time we did was 13 minutes for 2 of us.
Boss wouldnt let us take the car back to the customer for exactly the reason you raised.

Nothing wrong with the job, just knowing what your doing makes things definitely quicker.

I had 4 tyres fitted at Bridgestone Select recently, 4 x 235/50/18 (buy 3 get 1 free AWD SUV) that was 1.75 hours fitted balanced, wheel alignment, refit the space saver, all nice and shiny

FFS, it’s Sunday night… I literally have to wake up tomorrow and have a full day of this shit now.

Of all the petty shit… yes, they were used tyres. Used tyres are faster to fit as they are already pre stretched. Being a shitbox SUV, maybe they threw some mud and dirt on it so it looks like a big bad off roader? Is what what you wanted to hear?

Now, let’s get the the crux of your post… instead of beating around the bush with some bullshit story, just tell us what “cOmPeNsAtiOnZ” you seek. And don’t forget to make is as unrealistic as you possibly can. Remember to slather some “bUt MuH KiDz” or “sO tHeY dOnT dO iT To aNyOnE eLsE” punitive damages on top…

    • Damn peg… Show me on the dolly where OP touched you

    • Ooft Peg, mate, you need to step back.

  • +3

Thanks for the spray. Of course, no interest in any compensation beyond the prompt refund given. Purpose of the post was to seek "others' experience and views about what is reasonable to expect in these circumstances." Circumstances way outside my years of happy experience with tyre retailers. Plenty of those views here!

    • Thanks for taking the feedback like a champ.

Just out of curiosity was there an overall price difference between chain A and chain B?

      • +2

Slightly higher wheel alignment fee (and a credit card fee).

    • +2

Like every post like this, I feel there's more to this story.

Asking for an explanation would have gone a long way or even a quick search in the waiting room.

Anyway, now you have an explanation, maybe an apology is in order.

  • I would kill for a tyre change to be done that quickly and there’s people out there complaining about some dirt on their new tyres 😂

  • I love how everyone complains about the speed of things happening with mechanics and when it's done quicker you're like "whoa whoa whoa, what corners did you cut buddy"

You can pretty easily tell if the tyres are new or not.

Generally new tyres, at least for motorbikes, have tread marks on them in yellow/red. Also if they're brand new they'll have those little 'spiky' things all over the tread that wear off after a few hundred KM's.

Being dirty is probably because they took it for a test drive before giving it back to you lol

    • No test drive by Tyre chain A.

    • The new tyres from Tyre chain B had red lines on the tread and 'spiky things'.

  • did they provide the print-outs from the wheel alignment?

    • Tyre chain A did not. The next day, Tyre chain B did provide them.

  • When I used to sell tyres we could get stuff done pretty quick if it was close to closing time and the boss had already bought pizza and beers. 4-5 of us working together.

I doubt an ASX has many adjustment points. 15 minute alignment tops.

  • I needed new tyres on my MX-5, and was looking for the same ones that were coming off (Yoko Advans). I had a flat as well, so managed to get the car to a branch of a well known tyre shop, which I'll call BJ for simplicity . They said they didnt have any Advans in stock, and there wasn't any in the entire state. Because I needed tyres, I asked for their recommendation for similar tyres and they suggested Yoko BluEarth, I questioned it, and I was told it's the same thing. I asked about other brands, but apparently they didnt have any either.
Being desperate, I accepted their recommendation.

Took the car out for a spirited drive, knowing my own and the car's limits, and I almost skidded into a ditch. Took the car to a different branch of BJ's, and they looked up the tyre I originally wanted, and told me that they had heaps. BJ had a tyre satisfaction guarantee, which I took advantage off and they swapped them to the ones I wanted in the first place.

Full credit to the second branch that helped me out.

Not sure what the moral is.. but some places and some people are just shit.

  • I don’t understand the fixation with fast tyre change and wheel alignment. Looking for fitter to spend whatever time needed to do it properly. The chain that advertises 30 min or free I avoided last time I needed tyres…
