    • So the main concerns is to check that all of your drivers (video, sound, etc) are supported? Is there a compatibility tool that can do this?
      Thanks

Yes. I rebuilt my main porn er office box specifically with Win 8 in mine. My mobo - H77M-D3H has full support for Win 8, as does the 3220 I slapped into it. If you have unsupported devices, upgrade. The new ones will be faster and cheaper. This is 2012 not 2002.

        • Im using a B75 MB and G550 CPU :) works out allot cheaper and i was able to put in a Samsung 128gb SSD, 8GB of ram …and still supports win8

        • I expect any office PC's I build to last 5yrs, within that time Celeron's and Penitum's are likely to run out of puff, and if I ever want to do grunt work the i3 may be slow and do-able, the Celeron's and Pentium's just won't cut it. Bottom line, worth the extra $70.

Go to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows/buy and select the "Buy for $39.95" link. It downloads a small 5meg or so app. The very first thing the app does is run a compatibility check.

After than you can cancel if you would rather buy a physical copy.

  • is it just me or does anyone else's CD key NOT WORK .. fail to activate ?>

    • +2

Windows 8 from the stores is an upgrade, if you did a clean install it wont activate, it will install but not activate.
If you install ontop of a previous version it will.

However if you install it TWICE, that is do a fresh install, then run the install from windows 8 then it will upgrade itself and
      it will activate.
      Go figure

      ..

  • Thanks OP

Was going to get the $58 pack with Internet Security at The Good Guys but figured this deal was too good to pass up (already have internet security)

Now to get my uni study out of the way so I can use this beauty!

  • Did Anonymous shut down and redirect apple.com to http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/82959 ?

  • FYI - I got Good Guys to price match it (paid $48.00) and saved a trip to OW

    • then that even better…. you can get free Kaspersky Internet Security 2013!!!
      see my other post

"After several questions, Ms Flammer confirmed Microsoft would not sell a full version of Windows 8 in Australian stores, instead offering only upgrade packages."

    Source - http://www.news.com.au/technology/microsoft-ceo-hails-immine…

    • You can buy OEM Pro versions for around $150.

  • Thanks OP. Had pre-order this at HN online via debit card. Rang up and asked about a price match. The lady told me they're aware of Officeworks price and to just submit an email through their website with my order number and explain. I should get the difference back as a refund.

Anyone in the same boat who's already paid elsewhere should inquire.

  • If anyone want Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 then good guys deal is better!

  • Just grabbed a copy from Officeworks Brisbane store, they only have 6 left now!

  • This is also available from Harris Technology North Ryde for the $48.72.
The Media center is downloadable from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/feature-packs
The Pro pack is the old "ANYTIME Upgrade" feature to bring WIN8 up to Win8 Pro with Media center.

  • so many iSheep in here…

So what would be the cheapest way to get a genuine copy of windows 7 home premium 64 bit?

    • +1 million

  • what do you buy if you're putting together a new PC that has no OS??? this is really confusing!

    • Windows 8 OEM, either standard or Pro…

Or stick with Windows 7 OEM and one of it's variants.

    • you buy THIS!!! from office works for $48 bux .. thats what i did.. works fine

  • so windows 7 OEM is generally around 100 clams right?
