670

Feb 21 - Puccini in the Park

Feb 24 - When We Were Young

Feb 28 - Summer Serenade: Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Rossini

The Sidney Myer Free Concerts are free, non-ticketed events. This means that entry is provided on a first-come, first-in basis. Once the attendee capacity number has been reached, entry will be closed. We recommend arriving early to avoid missing out.

Gates open at 5.30pm, with concerts beginning at 7.30pm. On Saturday 24 February the Melbourne Youth Orchestra presents a Curtain Raiser performance at 6pm.

The concerts will go ahead - rain, hail or shine. The Sidney Myer Music Bowl is an outdoor amphitheatre. If rain or bad weather occurs, the show will proceed, unless deemed unsafe to do so. If it’s looking a little rainy, don’t forget to bring a raincoat. Umbrellas are allowed into the main lawn area but are required to be closed during the performance so as not to obstruct the view of those behind you.

You are sitting on the grass so I would take one of those small legged chairs or a click back seat. They are good concerts.

Well … re 'small legged chairs' do please try to be considerate with 'chair placement/elevation'. The fact is that >90% of the attendees at this event rock up with a picnic blanket, and sit on the ground. It might be a bit mean spirited to rock up with a large party of dudes all sporting 'elevated chairs', and block the view of others. Depending on the position you choose, I guess this may not be an issue.

I meant the really small ones. Although I agree the non elevated ones with the click backs would be better.

I find the non-elevated ‘click-back’ chairs more comfortable than camping chairs anyway.

  • Which one is the best

Day 1 - Puccini for Opera. If you don't "get" opera then not for you.

Day 2 - features young composers new works + Sibelius, so avoid unless you're interested in contemporary classical or want to support young composers. Or you specifically like Sibelius (which is pretty advanced listening)

Day 3 - for more casual listeners. Rossini / Beethoven / Tschaikovsky all masters and program is very palatable.

We went last year. Was completely full. Got a terrible spot at the top of the hill facing away from stage. Everyone around us was talking so we could barely hear the music. We left after 15 minutes. IMO if you really want to listen to classical music, you're better off finding a concert performance on YouTube and watching at home. Save yourself the hour-long trip each way only to be disappointed.

We have picniced once for the concerts and found it nice half way down the lawn but now we go down to the seats. We have always found seats down the right side arriving around 20 min before the start of the performances.

Yep love the MSO but these really should be ticketed. Too many gross punters

      • Rich people are far more obnoxious and ignorant than poor people

  • Very fun, bring a blanket, water and snacks, a cushion if you'd like and a decent solid umbrella if you're coming early.
Its Summer, and waiting hours under the sun is tiring. Also in case of Melbourne Weather(TM)

I echo comments that if you turn up close to the start time, you may not get a good seat.

A lot of people who have the premium seats near the front turn up several hours early and have a picnic.

    Well worth it.

    Highly recommended… And free!
