Best Powered Speakers for around $500?

I've got a svs sb1000 sub to go with it. It will be used with my PC.

What dya all recommend?

  • Define "best". What criteria is important to you? What connections are required? What special constraints or considerations?

    • It's pretty much all up there
      best: sound quality
constraint: used as PC speakers so not gigantic
connections: nothing special, just RCA in

Edifier R1280DB I think fits your criteria. They are good value for the price when on their "special" price. I've got 3 pairs and they are awesome. One pair is on my desktop (music and video calls) and the other pair is on a PC in my garage for Foxtel streaming, third pair is in the caravan.

    • +1 for Edifier R1280DB

      • I've already got this one but looking to upgrade for something around the $500 range

  • they don't make them anymore, but the Aktimate Mini were great speakers for around this price. Two HomePods would also be good, but you can't get the latest version for $250 each.

    • I'd love to have a HomePod 2.1 virtual Atmos setup… if only Apple would make a sub or a way of connecting one.

the Edifier R1280DB pair is on Amazon for ~$140, but I'd be looking at the Edifier S1000MkII for around $380. Why?: aptX HD decoding for Bluetooth - it's a higher standard, should sound cleaner, and even better - wifi is an input option, again technically better frequency response. Both of these won't matter if you only use RCA. Class D amp vs unspecified for the R1280DB. I'd go the dearer one here just for future versatility. I've not heard them (or of them). Look for some expert reviews.
"What HiFi" seem to like Wharfedale and other more established brands and I've trusted their reviews on other purchases. Very useful for comparing.
    Happy listening.

  • Should also note, I currently have an Edifier 1280DB and am looking to upgrade. I tried the Audioengine a5+ which I liked the sound of but the quality control has been pretty bad and I've had to return two of them and don't wanna deal with another potentially faulty one.
