Aftermarket Keyboard for iPad Air

Hi all, any idea about good aftermarket keyboard for iPad air 2022?

Apple magic keyboard is in high $400's. I have seen some aftermarket on YouTube videos but not sure where to get good quality ones? Or Should I just suck it up and pay Apple Tax?

The Apple one is pretty good (use one for my iPad Pro) but the Logitech option is prob just as good from the chatter about it during previous deals

I like the Apple one, though I find the lack of the row of function keys especially escape, to be annoying. It also adds a fair bit of weight at 601 grams.

I changed caps lock to escape
But yeah the lack of f keys is annoying when I want to rdp to my work PCs and need f keys. I hope it’s addressed in v2 I will prob upgrade when they release a new iPad Pro

        • Nifty tip - will do the same.

        • How would you change key map on ipad?

@BigLeviathan: assuming you mean you already have a magic keyboard

Open the Settings app on iPad.
Go to “General” and then to “Keyboard”
            Go to “Hardware Keyboard”
            Choose “Modifier Keys”
Choose “Caps Lock Key” and select “Escape” as the modifier key.

i think i remember reading this can apply to other connected keyboards too (Eg a bluetooth keyboard) but I've never tried it myself.
..a normal keyboard would have ESC though so prob wouldnt even need to bother.

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Cool! didn't know this exists.
I'm using iPad 7th gen with Apple smart keyboard and I can see the option there.
              Thanks

The brydge keyboards are excellent, and more affordable than the apple. I'll be buying another when I next upgrade.

    • Any Idea about ESR (they are similer to apple magic keyboard) @around $100 from Amazon?

      • There isn't much but it is discussed in a old deal post - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/780385

      • I haven't used ESR particularly, but have been disappointed with that style of keyboard case, as you really need a table to use it comfortably.
The brydge style makes it more into a laptop.

    • How are the Brydge keyboards when using the touchscreen?

The current ones look good. When I bought my iPad, they didn't have models that attached magnetically.

Mine is a few years old, so doesn't have a trackpad, so I use the touchscreen all the time and it is fine. The hinges are stiff enough to use the iPad like a laptop in your lap, and the build quality is high.
On a couple of occasions people have assumed it was a mini laptop, and that is what it feels like in use.

MXQT2ZA/A A2261 can be acquired pre-owned for somwehat less than retail, cheapest I've seen is $199 from a secondhand dealer in Phoenix Park 6163

  • Apple Magic Keyboard is GOAT, I'd look for a second hand one if you use your iPad a lot.

  • Cheers everyone. looks like Majority is with Apple. I do have education access with gift cards so, it will be a bit cheaper than retail.

  • I don’t know much about it tbh but have heard logitech make some good ones.

    • That would be the combo touch - it doesn't stand on its own.

  • Inateck make some pretty decent iPad keyboard cases that aren't too expensive.

It'll be harder to type on in general though since iPads aren't huge.
