Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro Connection Question

Hey guys,

I just set up google nest pro in my house. FTTP FTTN/FTTB connection hence need to plug it into my current TPG sht box.

I’m trying to figure out if my phone is connected to 5gHz or 2.5GHZ. I know the nest pro doesn’t have a separate band but I still wanna see because I’m currently getting slightly better connection in my bedroom but still nowhere near the speed in the living room.

I know it also has 6Ghz but my phone 14 pro and Mac air don’t support it.

I looked up online it says you can tell in the Home App but I can’t see the options listed.

Edit: please see pics. TPG said I need to use their modem.

This is wrong, FTTP does not need a modem, that NTD is the modem.

You can plug it direct into the Google thing.

Have you run a speed test using a wired connection?
I suggest you call your ISP for help.

    • tpg said because fttp runs off Vlan. If the google nest doesn’t have a DSL socket, it won’t work.

      • The DSL port shouldn't affect FTTP, however perhaps the Google WiFi thing doesn't support vlan tagging like every other thing out there.

        • Yeh that’s what they told me

nbn FTTP with TPG is PPPoE, your TPG username/password credentials and doesn't use a VLAN ID.

FTTP doesn't use a DSL socket. It's ethernet out of the nbn NTD to the Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro router.

        • I have got an older apartment idk if that’s why?

          I’ve uploaded some pics

Yeah nah, unless you are on FTTN or FTTN. Post some pictures.

    • Pics uploaded thx

Thanks…. Those pics show that you are on FTTN (Fibre to the Node) not FTTP.

So yeah, you do need to keep a modem in the mix. What model is your modem?

Might be best to pop it in bridge mode, and let the google nest do the rest.

        • oh man I am an absolute noob, what is bridge mode and how do I do that?

The modem is TPlink provided by TPG, it's dog sht

Bridge mode basically turns off everything the router does and only takes FTTN connection and spits out the Ethernet connection for the google nest to do the router/nat work.

What is the model number on the modem, turn it over should tell you, like VR1600v etc.

Otherwise look in the menus for something that says bridge mode https://imgur.com/kJD0bal

Once this is enabled, all wifi etc will be disabled. Set your nest up to use a 'WAN' connection

            • @JimmyF: wow ok thanks man I really appreciate this. I will take a look when I get back but I'm pretty sure its VR1600v

            • @JimmyF: hey man just playing with the settings. It looks like I need to delete my current VDSL to set up a new one.

Can I please ask, if I delete and set up as Bridging mode, do I then need to reset my Nest pro? thanks

Edit: just turned on bridge mode, now the Internet icon light on the Tplink modem no longer lit 😵‍💫I have no Internet now

              • @sauce2k: Once in bridge mode, you need to connect the third party modem/router to the WAN port of the bridged TP-Link. Then, you need to configure the third party modem/router to a "Wireless router only" device.

                Do you get internet then?

                • @JimmyF: Yeh so right now my nest pro (haven’t reset it yet) is connected to the tplink modem WAN port. So now I gotta reset the nest pro is that what u saying? Sorry I’m noob.

                  I have no Internet now

                  • @sauce2k: You need to configure the nest to be the router etc. Yes. So reset it.

                    I have no Internet now

Worst case, you factory reset the tpg router and you'll be back to what it was

Click on the device in the Google Home app and it should show you which…
