Hi OBs,
We all saw those ads I posted the other day. Today I stumbled across this: http://youtu.be/BLJiDyIvwzE?t=1m7s

Hi OBs,

Yes, we all want to get a clever dick.
I thought it was funny and witty.
Half the population has a dick and everyone likes a good dick, what's the harm in a few dick marketing references?
Yeah it gave me a little laugh. Better then average boring Woolworths/Coles/JB/Harvey Norman paper.
I donot see them been around in 5years time. they slow dying. i work for them for 10years i tell u i have see many changes. They try all most everything. it like all woolworth business they go in half bake. they try powerhouse. now rebranded stores. so much more in between. now they cut overhead at head offices now they are just going for brock on products with cheep every. as ex staff member now sit back watch it slow die. clever dick just service like any other. they are looking for fun thing to used with word dick. dumb dick had fire sale for 20millon.
Imagine how good they would be doing if they hired people that could form a coherent sentence.
Dick jokes… I didn't think their marketing department hired 15 year old schoolboys.
and then you see who gives you more bangs. skip the last 3 words
It's too funny, I can't wait to see "Dick blows it hard" at the closing down sale
huge clearance sale = DICK DROPS ITS LOAD
when they stuff something up = DICK HAS A BALLS-UP
they get record sales (as if!!) = DICK PENETRATES THROUGH NEW BARRIER
they go bankrupt = DICK DROOPS/SHRIVELS
downsizing = DICK GOES SMALL
12" laptop on sale = GET YOUR FULL 12" AT DICK'S
this sorta covers it
a little bit of DICK is ok but too much dick shoved down your throat is too much
DICK DOES
CLEVER DICK
thats fine but the are really forcing the issue now
lol this is hilarious, mods post this one the front page!
They should probably change their logo as well.
I wonder too if their "Clever Dick" will explain that the "personal cloud" idea they're selling in that ad runs into some cost-related issues if the kids start streaming video from home over daddy's 3G connection. Ask a hammer salesman for advice on tools and you'll find that the tool for every job is a hammer.
I miss the old days of DSE when you could go in and buy a resister or diode (and the staff behind the counter actually knew what they were talking about and understood basic electrical theory).. That's what made them special and worth a shop visiting because they had so much interesting electrical knick knacks …
Now its just like walking into an electrical department store and really not much differentiating itself from others (go to any shopping center and you'll find what DSE sells everywhere else)… But not many stores sell electronic components…
Glad jaycar is still around and are not changing their model to become another DSE selling domestic consumer electrical devices.
How much demand is there for a shop that sells electrical components? Would you say that times have changed and there are less people mucking about with electronics these days?
That's true but as a kid that grew up doing those "Funway" electronics kits, I would regularly be in their shop with my Dad on a Saturday morning getting various bits and pieces. Point is we bought heaps of other larger electronics because we were physically there, so we saw a lot of products that we would otherwise have missed. They often had cool (in the nerdy sense) displays of robots/walkie-talkies/ LED lamps etc.
SO a diode or a handful of resistors may only be a 50c sale, but it WAS their business model and point of difference and the way Mr actual Dick Smith build the company from the ground up. Those components bought people into the stores in droves and they bought higher value items because they were there and they trusted the knowledge of the staff.
Woolworth and CBAs only looking at floorspace Vs individual item sale profits ($ per square metre) have completely misinterpreted the nature of the business model and are sure to kill it dead with wrong headed but certain misunderstanding of how it worked.
Wont be around for much longer - no point of difference/ignorant staff.
