Damn, I just spent $450 on a Neato Robotics XV-21.
Though somehow I don't think this Aldi product is comparable.

    • +3

I'm sure you are right, you get what you pay for however you can try the ALDI one and see how it goes, if you don't like it you have 60 days to take it back.

Damn, I just spent $450 on a Neato Robotics XV-21.
Though somehow I don't think this Aldi product is comparable

But with the same amount of money you could get 3 of them and have the added amusement of a Robot War on home turf, plus 3 years warranty on the casualties.

    • From what I've read, that Neato one is pretty efficient in how it cleans a room compared to many of the cheaper ones that supposedly just go off in random directions. If nothing else it'll probably a lot more efficient.

      • I have a Neato. I can't recommend it enough.

I've heard bad things about some of the cheaper chinese ones on the market and would avoid anything that isn't a Roomba, LG, Samsung or Neato at this point.

Would love to be proven wrong though.

    • Where did you get the Neato Robotics XV-21 for $450?

    • Would this go back to the dock automatically?

lols.. I thought this was a walkman for a second haha.
Are these robot vacuum cleaners any good? As in do they clean as well as cleaning the floor ourselves?

    • +6

"As in do they clean as well as cleaning the floor ourselves?"

Don't be silly boy, of course it doesn't ;)

    • My friend has a dearer brand and swears by it. Guess it comes down to how intelligent the software is on this Aldi model. You don't want it doing loops in the same bit of the house because it's a bit dumb.

    • Depends on the vacuum, but a good one can do an ok job. Not as good as yourself (unless you are really bad at vacuuming), but quite good for leaving it running in a room and have it relatively clean an hour later without hassle. You still need to do it with a proper vacuum cleaner (there were some specials of Dysons lately…) but not as often.

      walk……….man?

      • ^ sony walkman as they use to call it or big things portable thing that play cd's

        • i was being sarcastic

        • so was I

        • +12

well aren't we both just awesome

        • +7

Walkman played cassettes. CD ones were called discman. I remember it was such a in thing to be seen with one of these whilst walking or in trains.

        • +8

          "Freestyler! Rock da microphone…" wike-wike :P

    • +1

      looks like a Discman , :D

  • Not sure how good this one is, but COTD has similar product for $10 only:
    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_…

    • +10

The COTD one isn't a vacuum, just a robot with a cloth on the bottom….

    • +2

but the cotd one is absolute crap according to reviews on amazon

    • The COTD one is a "sweeper" which drags along a microfibre cloth, which is not very useful on carpet.
The Aldi one actually vacuums the floor.

You can always buy a slave. It's cheaper. (http://youtu.be/hdp21zzu41Y?t=1m23s)

It looks identical to the Philips one that was discounted at Target recently - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/82101

  • +4

This one from Zavvi is only $93 Delivered, similar spec, larger capacity.

  • always wanted to try one of these, for the price and return policy….definately will get one!

  • +2

OP seems to have a robot vacuum cleaner fetish

  • +8

Can I mod it into a killbot? :p

  • +1

Waiting for the LG 6170LVM to drop in price to ~ $600. In the meantime, will buy the Aldi one.

Plus, from the pictures, it seems its the same a the Phillips one, which was going for $199 recently.

So, you save $50, + you can return it within 60 days.

      • +5

$598.40 sounds like a bargain! Or you could buy a bunch of them at Aldi. Too bad they can't work communicate wirelessly and work as a team

      • Thanks gooddealmate.

There could be an issue with these models which originate from Korea. The instructions, labels on the vacuum itself and any commands would be all in Korean.

Plus, I have got HN down to $670. I just told him that I won't be paying over $600, and am prepared to waitt.

LG's next model, the VR6270LVM is being released in Australia. Once thats out the VR6170 will drop in price. He's gonna call me around Christmas time, when it would be even more discounted.

Until that time, there's always ALDI :)

  • I can't see how these things could have worthwhile suction.

    • Exactly. Some parts of carpet etc. will always need more attention than others. But if picking up dust is your thing. Maybe it will be ok

    • They work, apparently.

    • Agree, if you have pets and carpet this thing would be fracking useless.
I can run a broom over tiles in a few minutes for $0

      • +2

@greydaniel, you couldn't be further from the truth. Having pets is precisely one of the reasons to get one of these.

We have 2 indoor cats, and set our Neato off every 2nd day alternately upstairs and down stairs. Picks up a crapload of fur, and means the house stays clean pretty much all the time. Previously I would do a weekly vacuum, but within a few days the fur would show up all over the floorboards.

Pair a decent robovac with a Dyson DC35 (for edges, which the Neato can't do), and never have to do a full vacuum again.

      • +2

I have a roomba just for this purpose. With 2 indoor shedding cats, I can not praise my roomba enough. It does an excellent job.

    • +10

so the longer warranty rings alarm bells for you..
so if the product had no warranty you will be overjoyed and filled with confidence?

plenty of people keep receipts in filing cabinets or drawers, it not like they take up a lot of room.
Heck, if you want to be really organised take a photo of the receipt and save it in a dropbox account..

        • +5

Are you special? Warranty claims cost companies money. Warranties are a risk to companies profits on a product, so if a company offers a long warranty it shows they are confident that for the overwhelming majority there will be no problems with the product for them to have to pay for.

        • Your logic is flawed!

        • That logic is really flawed, because i know intel provides 5 yrs warranty on ssd, because they know their products are good, and it motivates them to make it well so that it wont go faulty.

    • +1

Just send me the receipt and warranty and I'll lose them for you. Then you can buy with confidence. Hahaha.

      • +1

All Aldi big ticket items come with a sticker on which you can write the date of purchase. These stickers have other important detail like model number year warranty contact. Hope that helps if anyone loose their invoice.

  • +5

I don't know how good this one is but I swear by the Roomba! It works best on hard floors (tiles, timber etc) but does also work on thick carpet and rugs, just keep in mind that it doesn't have the great suction power you get out of a high power vacuum cleaner to get all the dust out of thick carpet.

Out of the five people I know that have them, every one of them would recommend it to others because they love theirs.

    • I have a Roomba too. LOVE it! ♥ I find it cleans better than the cheap cyclonic vac (Pirannah I think?)that I bought at Kmart (& I thought that was fairly good).

  • +16

Oh good, soon I won't need the wife at all any more

    • Sorry accidentally negged you :(.

    • +17

Oh good, soon I won't need the wife at all any more

I dread to think what you're planning on doing to the poor vacuum cleaner.

      • +8

Guy above said the suction on these isn't that great. Might not be that fun.

        • +1

The more expensive ones have better suction!

        • +1

Can you give it some wine to suck better?

  • Yay, i need one

    • Isn't that the point?

      • It's a pun.

          Except Ozbargain

  • is this on sale until 3/11/12 or on sale on 3/11/12 only? thanks.

    • If you know Aldi, the date advertised is when it goes on sale, and available while stocks last. Which could be as little as a day, depending on how popular the item is.

      • thank you.

        • +8

Don't forget to stretch & warm up first, you'll want to be limber for battling the bogans when the Aldi store opens Saturday week! Too lazy to vacuum, but by crikey they'll punch on for cheap Aldi gear!!! ;)

  • Doomba time

    Cheaper than getting married.

    • +3

these talk back less as well. tho apparently these arent as good at doing the dishes or getting you a beer from the fridge.

      • +4

Enjoying the chauvinistic comments. Good work my fellow males.

      • +2

…or getting you a beer from the fridge.

The bar's not set very high for that function in my household…a simple repetitive recording of "get your own bloody beer you lazy bastard" should suffice!

  • +5

Read some horror stories of these sweeper/vacuum types awhile ago. Simply put, 'pet crap + robot vacuum = opposite of clean home (& your very own F1 circuit)'.

    • +2

Whilst I love my Roomba to bits, we have had a couple of hilarious incidents.

1, Roomba found a tissue & threw a party. Tissue everywhere! It looked like confetti. We cleaned him out & sent him into the room again & problem was fixed & a lesson learnt for us.

2 Cat vomits in the room with Roomba going. Luckily the cat had only just eaten the food, so it was pretty solid. Still, there was some yuk streaks for a few feet. :P

      • +4

How the heck did I do that in bold? Apologies for the accidental attention seeking.

  • no disassemble

  • I imagine the cheaper versions of these robot vacuum cleaners use Ni-Cad batteries and the more expensive ones use Ni-MH?

    • I thought NiMH pretty much surplanted NiCd in most applications, in part due to the concern about Cd as a heavy metal contaminant. Perhaps you mean NiMH vs Li-ion

      • +1

I've been looking at some known brands and some no-name brands and the known brands (LG, Samsung etc) seem to use Ni-Mh while the cheaper no names use Ni-Cad.

From past experience, I'll never buy anything battery powered with Ni-Cad gain.

More time for me to sit on Ozbargain and get fatter from all the glorious bargains.

    • There is food preparation and cooking robot out there but only equipped to army at the moment, awaiting it's being developed to public.

just thought i'd add a link to the item on the aldi website, doesn't look great but i'll give it a go and probably end up taking it back within 60 days

  • Bought 1 from Aldi Airport West at 8:30 this morning (03.11.12). Not many left when I got to the shelf!

    • So what's it like? Good suction, and can it get things from the corners of walls?

      • +1

Well, trued it out for a few days, and have taken it back - heres why

        1) Quality was okay, but not great
        2) Seemed to move around carpeted areas slowly
        3) Didnt cover a wide area - kind of stayed in the same room for too long
        4) Picked up a pretty decent amount of dust/hair, but figured you'd need to vacuum area again anyway (didnt get into corners too well)
        5) Our daughter (1yo) freaked out as it buzzed around the room!
        6) All up, not really worth $150 - seemed a bit gimmicky.

    • Already sold out at Albany Creek.

  • Got 2 from Burwood VIC ALDI, try one of them, well not really what I think of.

The product look good feel good, anyway, I will try it another few more days. If not really happy, will return both of them.

  • went to 5 different stores around western sydney..all sold out…:(

    • omg, i went there this morning 8:30, people already start paying them on the Casher. Luckly when I get them, still got a few left, but the stock level is very low.

  • +4

Picked up the last box from Aldi Canterbury around 9am yesterday. Man, these sell quick! Paid with a credit card to give me an extra year warranty. Still have no idea what the warranty actually covers but I note the following:

    • In the box is an additional pair of sweepers.
    • Also have a spare filter
    • After these run out, no idea where to get replacements from!
    • Battery is NiCd, but seems to be a standard battery plug that you can get from Jaycar so I might make my own battery pack once this one dies.
    • Vacuum has 3 modes from memory - random, square, circular sweep then goes back to start again
    • Picks up a lot more dust and dirt than you would think
    • The bin clogged up after 30 mins with hair and dust/dirt. Seems like have to empty fairly frequently
    • Avoids falls from stairs and all, but can get stuck sometimes trying to back out from a fall
    • Does not work well on carpet
    • If you have a rug on hard floor - it will get stuck getting on or off the rug
    • No return to base. Just a simple plugin charger

Will try it for a few more weeks and see how it goes. I expect that I will probably return it and save the $150 as it appears to be a novelty… eg. just an excuse to get lazy, i should use my proper vacuum cleaner more often.

    • Just to correct you that the battery is actually NiMH not NiCd
