I think I'm like size 10, maybe 10.5, I dunno. But I got this old stationary bike, Apple Fitness+ has stationary bike videos, so I should start using it before I look like Clive Palmer. The pedals don't have straps, or they are lost, but I read you need special shoes when cycling a lot. But they seem to start at like $100. I'd like shoes that are more like $10, it's not like I'll ever even wear them outside of the house anyway.
Cycling Shoes for Stationary Bike

Hmmm, cages. I might be in over my head. I'll just order some replacement rubber straps from Amazon. This is the bike I'm using btw, PROTEUS PEC 4550, same as on this page https://abacusfitness.com.au/bikes/
i think muz is referring to strap/strapless toe clips

…these will provide some improved efficiencyDamn maybe I should have ordered that, only 400 rupee.
@AustriaBargain: thats not may rupee at all
some other good to stuff to have:
- a nice strong fan….youll need it
- a trainer mat underneath for sweat but also to dampen sound & improve stability
- music….makes it easier to get into a session@franco cozzo: It's on a concrete floor. I'm using the Apple Fitness+, been paying for it for years in Apple One so may as well use it. They have hundreds of sessions recorded with charismatic trainers and a soundtrack throughout. The iPhone also shows you your heart rate in the corner as well as little clocks counting down the current intensity thing, heart rate through Apple Watch which is nice, makes the ancient cheapo bike feel really modern with the phone mounted to it.
Efficiency is the enemy of weight loss. Rubber thongs work fine for me. And a fan on a stand.
$10 shoes. Please.
just wear any old shit. you dont need spd/spdl and cycling shoes at this stage of the game
Don't forget Lycra and helmet
That was going to be my next question.
make sure you have a banana in the back pocket of your jersey….this is standard cycling attire
Make sure you don’t get dressed before going to the cafe with your clickdy clack shoe Lycra mates
@bloom: Only order a half-latte, don't want to slow down your ride.
You don't need special shoes, at least to get started. If you don't have clip in pedals then the cycling shoes you'd be looking at just have a stiffer sole than a regular shoe to help transfer power for climbing. Not an issue for just general exercise.
I agree with both Muzeeb, franco cozzo and apsilon, you don't need special shoes to start with, maybe afteryou really commit to it you can upgrade thw pedals and shoes.
I would definitely get a proper pair of padded cycling nicks. Your nether regions will thank you.Your nether regions will thank you.
They make scents. Cheers.
but I read you need special shoes when cycling a lot.
No .. no you dont.
Its not like a stiffer sole will make your stationary bike go any faster :)
$10 shoes and toe-straps will be fine. And the latter is very much optional.
When you decide you are fully committed to stationary bike riding then maybe upgrade to special purpose shoes. For irregular, just starting out use, it's not really necessary.
If your pedals don't have a cage then either get pedals that do or upgrade to pedals which require shoe cleats. Pedals that require cleats can be pretty expensive because you require matching shoes. (I've never seen them for $10)
The main benefit of specific riding shoes is energy efficiency. The soles are hard (so you don't waste energy squishing foam), the cleats keep your feet attached to the pedals so less chance of your foot slipping on the pedal (and wasting further energy) and you can also power in the upstrokes (helping your downstrokes on the other pedal).
I suggest you just ride with sneakers for the moment and if you're still riding daily in 3 months then think about upgrading your pedals and shoes.
