Ceiling fan recommendations

Our ducted aircon is sucking us dry so I am now considering installing ceiling fans in all our bedrooms. What material blade do you think is the most effective?

Has anyone got any recommendations for one that is energy efficient, doesn't make much sound and is extremely effective at cooling a room, especially during summer?

  • Look for only DC fans that match your decor for max efficiency.

      Any AC/DC fans on OzBargain?

Me, googling ‘Is there such a thing as having the THUNDERSTRUCK intro too loud as a ringtone’

    • Is that the round ones or the square ones Muzeeb?

  • I've gone the basic Clipsal Airflow and are good. But some are known to get that annoying clock pretty quickly

    • a classic for the ages.

    • Clock or click?

    • Need to resolve how OPs ducted air con is sucking them dry?????????????????????

      Maybe turn it down

You need solar so you can run ducted aircon all day. Then in winter use a wood fire if you have one, essentially free heating and cooling.

  • Personally, I would make sure you have wall mounted controls. We have a remote and it's a bit annoying. For example, if the light is off but the fan is on, trying to turn on the light switch does nothing, you need to use the remote to then turn on the light.

Mount the remote to the wall

      • Yeah our remotes came with wall mount cradles, so i just stuck them on the wall alongside the existing light switch, using 3m command strips. Works great

Don't Google a website having only fans, you'll be as shocked as I was.

i was only on that site to get directions as to how to get AWAY from that site!

  • Just put Eglo Bondi 52" in ours…..it goes up to 6 and we have never gone above 1 in our bedroom. In queensland. Gives great airflow. Installed two more in our living room and dining room

The DC version I should say

  • Just bought these myself

Mind you, can get them without a light, remote etc

    • hey me too!

      did they install well?

      • Going in next week, still mid reno. Fingers crossed 🤞

I’m finding the trend of remote control fans/lights more of a hindrance

So many variables. Ceiling height, room size etc. Use their online calculator.
We wanted a quiet, low /slimline for a small low ceiling bedroom. - 3mx3m x2.4 high
Got this one, it's super quiet, never use it over setting 2, also available in a larger blade size, with wall mounting or remote control.

For mine, I treasure the low speed settings, so I can get it just right. So important in a bedroom vs a living room.
BTW, make sure the blades don't come near a light, or you will get strobe. That's when you want one with a light built in.

+1 to this. The fan in my bedroom doesn't go low enough. Too hot without it so use it on low, but then I wake up in the early hours freezing cold. I want a fan where the low setting is just barely moving the air in the room.

Mine has night mode….so it literally just sweeps the blades every few seconds.
        Look for something similiar

Spyda series has an eco mode that is nice and slow.

  • Does anyone know the rough price to install a ceiling fan in a standard 3*3 bedroom. Thinking of installing fans in each room the avoid the aircon running and would like to get a ball park so I can cross check that against some quotes. Vic inner suburbs if that helps. Thanks!

    • Got charged 180 if a light existed and 250 if a new location.

      • Great - thanks for that! After some searching online I got a similar range of 150-300. May I ask, when you say if new location what does this mean? Currently all rooms have 4 down lights in each corner so I’m guessing this would not be exisiting light as in the one light in the middle of the room?

        • +1

Yeah i had a ceiling light that i replaced with a fan, so that was 180.

Then another fan went in a room with downlights so there was no existing light where i wanted the fan so that cost more because they had to cut a hole etc.

What if it falls on your head?

    • Oh my god id be killed!!

  • So you're ditching the aircon and going to use only fans? Nice.

  • I have HPM fans with remote controls in 2 of my rooms. One works perfectly. The other works in 3 modes - stupidly fast, ridiculously slow, or off.

  • Thanks for the replies – you guys gave me a few things to think about now.

Is there an optimal amount of blades I should be looking for? I mean, what is the difference between a 3 v 4 blade ceiling fan?

Also, I know ceiling fans are good for cooling. But someone mentioned to me that during the summer, ceiling fans are good for cooling the room and during winter, they can be activated to have the opposite effect (ie warming the room). Does anyone know if this is possible/true?

    • Yes even the bare basic Clipsal airflow has supported since for as long as I can remember. It just draws the hot air at top of room back down and circulates.

    • On mine it's just a remote button that reverses it

    • +1

It won't warm the room in reverse. It will push down / circulate the heat that is near the ceiling (as heat rises). You still need another source to produce the heat.

Fans don't cool a room like an AC would. They produce a cooling effect by moving volumes of air. If your room is 27° it will still be 27° with an apparent temperature of 25° for example.

    • I'm gonna fly the flag for those who are anti-ceiling fan. When I bought my house it had four. I rate them unattractive dust collectors, hard to clean, circulate the hot air from the ceiling downwards - I never switch them on. I prefer split A/C, DC pedestal fans and own one Vornado. I would consider a large fan in an outdoor space for comfort and to keep the bugs away. Just a counterpoint…

    • Does anyone know if this is possible/true?

Yes, most ceiling fans have a switch to blow down (usually during summer, to feel the breeze) or to blow up towards the ceiling.
That is achieved by the fan motor rotating clockwise or counterclockwise. Super simple.

Ceiling fans do not heat up the room, they just disperse more efficiently previously heated air, like from a log-burner or furnace.

  • +1

A DC, steel 5 or more bade fan will save you bucks, as you only need it on a low speed to move lots of air around. Cost twice as much as AC fan, but you'll save money in the long run and they last much longer.

  • Another vote for DC fans, waaay more efficient. The Eglo brand are decent quality for their price.

  • OP and others, re my link above to Fansonline Studio fans and the comments about slow speeds at night. Not all versions of the Studio DC are as slow as the model I bought. You need to check the specs for each model. Same with all fans really.

  • If you want quiet air flow then get wooden blade fans.

  • Can't you run ducted in fan only mode?

  • I bought a few arlec fan/lights from Bunnings. Can be noisy on the lowest speed setting (weird rattly noise that other reviews have mentioned), but apart from that really happy with them, mainly because of built in smart home integration (Tuya).

Don't have a brand to recommend but ceilings fan don't really cool a room.
They just blow the same air at room temperature.
Evaporation makes it feel as refreshing.

Air conditioned chills and dries the air and so the home feels more comfortable.
And that is why they use so much more power (= $$$).

Most ducted air have different sections or areas so you could shut some to save juice.
And only have them open in bedrooms, at a higher temperature. Perhaps 26 degrees. Humidity is the usual killer, not so much ambient room temperature.

    • Great fans, only thing that bugs me (and it might only be me, cos I didn't see any mention in reviews prior to purchase) is the infernal beep with every button press. Want the dim light? Beep beep beep beep beep. Out of warranty, considering damaging the beeper, but…yeah, if you like quiet fan activations… bewarned.

      • You’re describing the previous model. Mine doesn’t beep at all (and the light remembers what brightness it was last set to when you turn it on). The beeping was a big complaint about the previous model.

  • I can highly recommend the Mercator Caprice DC fan. I have an old house with high ceilings, have one fan in the kitchen, one in a large bedroom and one in a smaller bedroom and all are very effective. I particularly like the 'sea breeze' feature which speeds up significantly for a bit then returns to normal speed.

  • Fans dpnt acutslly cool the room. They just make it feel cooler IF the air moves in a way that evapourates sweat from your skin.
