Set in the Viking age, a broken Celtic warrior embarks on a haunting vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover.

I played 3 hrs of this game and it made me feel like I had schizophrenia. Must play with headphones.

    • +2

That's why they did the 3D audio, to make you feel what Senua feels. Also having the 'perma-death' is meant to niggle at the back of your brain for the whole game.

      • +1

Apparently only the voices in Senua's head were 3D, rest of the audio wasn't! Just watched the developer video of the sequel with the sound guy talking about the sequel using binaural audio for everything including music.

      • There’s no permadeath bro.

Of all the games I've played in my 52y on this planet. This one was possibly the most entertaining and memorable. It is a masterpiece.

    • how does it compare to Plague Tale Requiem?

I played a bit of Hellblade (the first couple of mins until the "imaginary" boss fight) and it seemed too gory / dark.

      • +6

Hellblade and Plague are both pretty dark games, but they're dark in different ways. Hellblade gets really intense with its mental illness theme. It's like you're right in Senua's head, dealing with her psychosis, and the atmosphere is super heavy and mythic.

On the other hand, Plague Tale is more about surviving in a brutal historical setting with plagues and wars. It's not as in-your-face intense as Hellblade, but it's got its own kind of darkness, especially with the family drama and all the stuff happening around.

And yeah, the ending of Plague Tale Requiem can really hit hard. It's one of those endings that sticks with you and makes you feel sad for a while. So, even though Hellblade might seem darker at first with all the psychological stuff, Plague Tale can sneak up on you emotionally. Different styles, but both can be pretty heavy in their own ways.

        • +1

Yeah so won't be playing these games! I don't need a game to make me feel sad.

  • Loved this game, sure was memorable

This is a great AAA 'Indie' title, as in was made by about 20 people, a side-branch of Ninja Theory.

This has awesome visuals, a great uplifting / epic story, the combat whilst is very basic, does the job (no Devil May Cry / Ninja Gaiden combos here). A lot of people call this a walking simulator, so yes, you do walk/run to places to find out where to go, solve puzzles to open doors. She suffers from schizophrenia, which plays a part in the gameplay and story.

It's very short, but very memorable. Can't wait for the sequel!

    • +2

Ninja Gaiden is made by Team Ninja, not Ninja Theory. I wouldn't call Hellblade a walking simulator. It's far too intense to be compared to the other games in the genre.

      • Whoops, you're correct, I get them mixed up.

Yeah I wouldn't put this in the same category as actual walking simulators, I think people just get bored too quickly these days and put it in the same boat.

          I get them mixed up

I've been a gamer for 30 years and I'd say these two are my most favourite developers of all time. Have you played Enslaved: Odyssey to the West?

          • @DontNeedThis: No I haven't actually, but I've enjoyed their other games. I saw it was based off the Monkey / Tripitaka story, is that related the old tv show at all? I loved that show.

Same price on the Xbox store as well (if you don't have Gamepass).

    • +1

Is it still on Game Pass?

      • +1

Xbox/Microsoft own Ninja Theory, so yes.

      • +2

Hellblade 2 is ready for pre-install as well (with a May release date), just checked.

    • Thank you guys, I almost bought it until I saw this comment. Free on gamepass yay!

VR version is also on sale.

Anyone who has played both the VR version and the flat/normal version, what would you recommend to a first-time player? One who will probably only play it once?

(I googled this and found only vague and conflicting opinions).

    • +2

Oh my god, why didn't I know there was a VR version? I'm tempted to buy this, but I'm not sure how the combat would go? Keen to hear others' thoughts.

    • +3

Finished the game with a monitor and headphones and loved it. Played the VR version for about an hour and it's weird. Third person VR takes some getting used to.

    • +1

lol turns out i already own the VR version. Havne't played it yet but will give it a shot

    • The VR version is just part of the bundle that costs $4.29. Watched some videos with gameplay and seems like a gimmick

    • This comes with the VR version as well as the standard

  • +1

This game was cringe… it had every cliche associated with mental illness. The story was predicable from the onset…The graphics was its saving grace… it was a good looking game…I realise a lot of people are giving it a great rap… I didn’t enjoy it… great for the price .. wouldn’t spend more on it though.. just my 2 cents

    • +2

Agreed. Got it in a bundle and combat was rubbish, just like in every other Ninja Theory game.

    • Yeah agreed also. Had big reviews and looked good but wasn’t fun and yeah felt like it was just something disguised as a game

    • +4

Another agree, finished it so I would never have to go back to it really. Felt it was far too clunky. Woulda been better as a some kind of non interactive cinema experience rather than pretending to be a game.

Definitely memorable, reminds me that walking Sims aren't for me. Glad many others could enjoy though.

  • +1

It's not a long game, but it's memorable and the atmosphere is amazing. Relatively easy to 100% it as well if you like doing that. I prefer on controller for sure though.

  • +1

one of the most unique and best games I have played

  • +1

This game is the only reason I haven't gotten rid of my Xbox, thought it was fantastic and have been waiting for the sequel.

  • Weird I have issues using the controller on the steam deck.

Also have issues with using oculus controller on the VR version

  • Wish it was this price on GOG

  • Fantastic game.
Systems can be a little clunky at points, but it's such a memorable and fantastic experience.
    Highly recommended.
