On The Fence about Steam Deck Decision

To anybody here that's been on the fence about buying the steam deck. what's the most your willing to pay that will sway your decision to buy one?

I'm talking about the original 512gb model.

I'm being given an opportunity to buy a friends one at a pretty cheap price, as he is upgrading to the OLED, but i have been on the fence about jumping into these handhelds so early, i had originally planned on waiting for a couple of revisions to come out (of either the steam deck or their competitors), however the price he's offering is tempting me.

    1. do you have time to play
    2. do you have a gaming pc right now
    3. what game styles do you play

i think steamdeck is great. my all time favourite game is RE4, and currently playing RE4 remake and it plays like a dream in hand held.
suspend mode is fantastic for someone like me who needs to be able to put the device down and want to pick it up instantly and get back into game.

OLED screen worth it, looks great IRL - but i think i will prob just run this one into the ground before upgrading to whatever version will be there at the time.

I will say a big factor i would say against buying 2nd hand is you dont get those glorious few weeks of smelling steam deck ventussy.

      1. i have public transport travel time
      2. yes i do, and this does excellent for all the high performance AAA
      3. a bit of everything, RTS, racing, FPS, survival games. But nothing online competitive.
        1. great i can see this being awesome for public transport if you can get a seat or…something to lean against maybe

        2. as long as you dont expect to be playing at max fps with everything maxed, i think its fine if you want to get some gaming in on a couch or bed

        3. maybe goes without saying but FPS and RTS not really good for this..unless you hook up a kb/mouse but then you gotta look at a hub..and probably some space and want to sit down and hook it up to a bigger screen in which case, kind of a waste and just a PC.

  • I paid about $800 in total for a base model and upgrade to 512gb SSD.

It's been worthwhile for me as I've finished a few games in my library on public transport, on holiday, or just on the couch. Depending on the game, I've played on my steam deck rather than my PC. Pretty much everything has been download and play.

If you were just playing at home, a phone/tablet and a controller may be better option.

  • If you're willing to compromise a bit on graphics, framerate, etc. I would recommend going for it, especially if he's planning on selling it cheap. It's a good buy and it's a lot more comfortable than phone/tablet gaming. I've been playing yakuza 0 on mine and it's been a blast

Get it. Time spent waiting for the next is the opportunity cost of not enjoying your gaming library today. It's a great form factor, very comfortable and capable.

As a reference point, I sold my LCD unit for $600 recently. It also had a 512gb ssd upgraded from original 64gb.

If you have disposable cash and have a use for the unit then go for it. But given you're hesitating, i imagine only you know then reason/s you wouldn't buy it even if a good deal.

Perhaps list for yourself the pros vs cons.

  • I’m a “wait a few generations” person too, but I think the Steamdeck has been pretty good and reasonably well supported, so I wouldn’t wait just to see if future versions are better.
I think they will be, but I think the first gen was sold very cheaply to see if a new market would work, and I expect future versions to be costlier.

  • If you look at the ipod from 1st to 5th generation, there were huge changed. I would wait at least to the 2nd or 3rd gen personally.

  • I picked up one a few months ago, and I'm really pleased with it. It's the original model, 64GB. I have a 1TB upgrade, but I've yet to install it as I still playing some games on it.

Was also considering the ROG Rally, which had better specs, but Windows put me off, having a terrible interface outside of PCs.

Valve has done an amazing job on their interface though, as well its compatibility layer.

The portability is a nice feature and although mine usually sits in the Dock by my TV, it's been useful to bring with me to places.

  • Switch 2 comes out this year, you may get more value with Nintendo's exclusive games.

    • Yeah but most PC gamers have like 100+ games in their pile of shame that they've already bought or acquired 🤣

      • Yeah it's the acquired part that adds value to Steam Deck.

Heck yeah its worth it!! I had the exact same question a few months ago, and more than glad that I went ahead and bought the deck. You can use it whereever you want which is always a huge plus.

Deck 2 will not be coming out for quite some time, it actually mostly depend on APU progressions from AMD, which isn't progressing as fast as people liked.

Also Steam Deck have no issues playing AAA titles at ultra setings, especially with AI Frame Generation technology to doube your framerate. Check out "Deck Wizard" on youtube for some videos.
