That is an odd combo… But useful for if you need to run dual 4K 60hz DP displays!

    • +1

It reads as 4k30Hz only when using dual monitors.

Reckon this is actually TB3? It does claim "Attached 0.45m/1.5ft Thunderbolt pigtail cable (Intel Certified) ensures the transfer rate up to 40Gbps"

    • Yep people use them for that when making a 5k iMac display

      • I'm not sure if I read that right, but if you mean running an external display off a 5k iMac's thunderbolt ports - you don't need thunderbolt for that. Thunderbolt (and some USB-C ports) have DisplayPort alt modes, you only need a USB-C cable capable of display out, or even a USB-C to DP cable or adapter.

Oh no sorry I was on my phone. What people (including me) did was take a LCD from an iMac 5K and put it with a driver board from AliExpress to make a monitor. The board requires dual display port 1.2 connections. If you use this WAVLINK device you can make two DP1.2 ports to drive it from a single thunderbolt connection.

Basically just confirming it is truely thunderbolt.

      • is there a good guide for doing that you can share?

You have 1Gbps Ethernet and a single 5Gbps USB 3.0 port. How could you tell if it isn’t?

    No passthrough USB-C charging?

Is this any good? Sounds awfully cheap for a TB dock (vs just generic USB C "docks")….

Currently I have a Lenovo USB C dock at one of my WFH desks and it works with everything (Macbook Air M2 from work, Galaxy Z Fold 5, iPad Pro, etc) except my ROG Ally (which can't detect display) so I'm currently debating if I want to replace it with something like this…

    • Yeah it seems like it’s too good to be actually decent, won’t be surprised if it breaks down in a couple of months. Can I get the model of your Lenovo dock? I’m in the market for my Macbook Pro. Planning on using it only for my keyboard and mouse for now but will add in a 4k monitor next month.

      • I have two Lenovo docks.

The one I'm using at the moment which is not working with my ROG Ally is the Lenovo USB-C Dock Gen 2.

The other one which does work well with everything is my Lenovo Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock. Note this one is significantly bigger. Also, if you plan to use with an M1/M2/M3 chip Macbook Pro (ie not the M1/2/3 Pro/Max chips) then you'll also need to get a USB Displaylink adaptor if you want more than 1 external display.

    • Can I ask about the use cases that you have with your Fold 5?
      Thanks

      • DeX mode - basically a desktop-like interface which works surprisingly well. Useful in a pinch when I don't want to pull out my work laptop and just need to reply to some emails on Outlook, open Slack, etc… since the dock already has keyboard, mouse and monitor (and wired ethernet) connected. Note that the maximum aspect ratio is standard ultrawide so it doesn't support super ultrawide (32:9) so I have black bars on each side.

  • Could buy one, let's see if it gets here

Can't buy anymore, doesn't add to cart :(

    Not working anymore

Link is different now and goes to a different product

    • +1

      with the $95 price tag

  • So if my laptop has USB-C PD (10Gbps) port, will this be able to display out two monitors on top of the laptops display?

    • +1

Nope, not if it has usb-c PD. You'll need Thunderbolt for the full bandwidth multi-display stuff. It's possible that port has DP alt mode, up to the laptop manufacturer. You might be able to use two displays via DisplayPort MST

  • Man… I really wanted that

  • damn missed out….. the link now goes to a usb dock

TB Docks are bloody awesome. More and more of these now are starting to appear in my workplace offices. Really cool how I can just walk to a random desk and plug in my Surface Pro and it becomes a triple screen workstation.

  • Will it work on a dual monitor setup where is a 180hz monitor.

  • Hi guys,

Do you get lower graphic quality if you use docking station VS directly connecting to monitors?
Ex> High end games quality connected through docking station vs directly from desktop graphic card to monitors?

    • +3

The quality is exactly the same as long as you can drive those pixels at the native res

I believe that the link is wrong as the product of the linked webpage shows a much different appearance from the thumb pic.

    • Yep I was getting confused as well. The thumbnail in OzB & the actual product in Amazon is totally different.

    • Must have sold out and they wanted to keep the popular link.

  • Shows as 95$, missed it?

    • It's been sold out for long. I think mods are afk. You can see 9 reports for OOS.

      • +1

        damn, such a good deal

If people dont need the ethernet port, I recently got a Ugreen dock with passthrough and up to 8K and its appears to be working pretty well. Only have 1 monitor attached to lappy but thats running at 4K 60hz no problem.
    2x HDMI, 2x USB A, 1x USB C, 1 USB PD input about $55 after discount tho

  • Id be cautious with any of these docks. I would burn through one every 6 months or so, they just stopped working.
I bought a proper Thinkstation dock (despite not having a Lenovo) for around $200 and its been absolutely solid.
    Buy it once
