Always book direct with the Airline.

    • +4

Yeah, unless there is a crazy discount for some reason, these sites are great for finding the optimal deal, then backing out, using cashback sites if possible or going through one of the airline's own ads if not possible, and booking the flights directly on the airline's own website. If anyone is getting the affiliate benefits, it should be us 😅

    • Depends on airline. Qantas is usually 20% cheaper on agents. If you collet FF points, upon redemption you are F*'ed .

      • +10

"If you collet FF points, upon redemption you are F*'ed"

What do you mean by this?

      • Qantas will refund the difference if you find a cheaper price through an agent on the same day. Most airlines do it. There's zero reason to buy through a travel agent.

        • +2

The last time I tried to do this Qantas approved the refund, but it never showed up, even after contacting Qantas support multiple times. Do not recommend.

          • @elieb: Just using the Jetstar carrot with no stick and no carrot.
Works a treat when they strand you in Narita and say, Just get a hotel and we will refund you, Here is your docket
            ..Crickets for $500 refund

Sounds like a Gerry H. guarantee!
We wasted weeks going thru comparison sites and eventually a deal showed up $800 cheaper than the Qantas website. So I rang Qantas and told them and they promised to check it out and come back to me. We needed tickets not more time wasted so we booked with the agent in Adelaide knowing that SA has a sort of better working consumer protection than ultra corrupt QLD.
Fingers crossed, the agent was licensed and the confirmation email came in. So I ran Qantas again then the agent rang me complaining that we told Qantas and threatened us to cancel the ticket. Ok did they get me the FF points? Nah I needed a $99 FF account not a free one was the excuse! Until we boarded we were never 100% sure if we could fly but it worked out ok.

          • +1

@payless69: You're meant to book the tickets with Qantas first, then make a price guarantee claim.

But yeah, it's Qantas - they're shit, so it may or may not arrive. Perhaps you wouldn't want to risk it for an $800 discount.

    • Is there any particular reason? I'm looking at flightfinder thats giving me $300-$400 cheaper if I book via trip.com for example compared to directly with the airline.
      Thanks in advance!

      • +1

        Have fun with trip.com!

        • is it because of the service they provide? or is the ticket like not legitimate?

What about business class dates for around $6k return from Sydney? I saw another post but not as helpful as this one.Cheers

    Melbourne $1337

Well that's a pretty 1337 price from Hellbourne

    • At least Melbourne gets a deal.
Etihad flies out of Perth - but despite being significantly closer, our best price is more than $1000 more.

      • +2

Because more people want to get out

        • Ooh-weee, need some burn cream over here.

      • +1

        Etihad don't fly from Perth.

        • But we do have Perth Amsterdam return with China Eastern from $1184, that seems pretty reasonable.

        • Huh - looks like you might be right. They were sharing with Virgin.
That's weird. I was sure they did. Perhaps I am thinking pre-COVID.

  • Anything cheap from Brisbane to London?

    • Etihad didn't come back to BNE post covid - hopefully they'll look at it again when they next expand.

    • +1

$1207 on China Eastern from Brisbane isnt bad!

I am sure everyone is aware of this but just putting it out there for people like me who came to know this last month. There is a UK Air Passenger Duty (APD) to fly back to Melbourne.

    • whats that mean a new airline?

    • +4

There is a UK Air Passenger Duty (APD) to fly back to Melbourne.

This is not specific to Melbourne is it? It needs to be paid for anyone flying overseas from the UK?

      • +6

It's not and it's already factored into the prices.

        • Very important point, thank you! I thought that needs to be paid on top of the ticket price when departing from London.

    • +2

Most countries have some kind of international departure tax. For Australia it's $60, pretty high. But UK's APD is probably the worst in the world at 84 GBP for long haul flights (even higher for Business class). For Europe trips, it's worth checking outbound alternatives besides UK.

      • in terms of cheap flying i've found PRG, FCO, and MUC to be decent.

AMS used to be great but now not so much, especially as they reduce the amount of planes allowed per day (NIMBYism hard in that area, + Greens people)
CDG is shit-house this year because of olympics

        SOMETIMES. ZRH is decent.

  • Wonder why they've dropped luggage to 20kg for this otherwise would've cancelled my existing flights and rebooked.

    • +6

never understood why people feel the need to take their entire wardrobe/bathroom with them to travel

I'm astonished Etihad only allow a 7kg carry on and NO personal item….. as someone who travels carry-on only, this is Jetstar-style

      • +1

from personal experience they didn't care i had a backpack and essentially a second laptop bag with me when i boarded, but YMMV i guess.

Make sure you take advantage of the stopover services:

    https://simpleflying.com/etihad-abu-dhabi-stopovers-guide/

    • +1

Not sure why the downvote. This is a great program where they pay for your stay while you're there. Dubai is also less than 2 hours drive from Abu Dhabi. It looks like a great deal for someone who wants to explore the UAE since you'll be landing in Abu Dhabi anyway.

      • +2

The downvote is probably because there's almost never any availability for free stopover hotel rooms. Search for 'Etihad free stopover review' and see what a lot of people experience.
Would love to hear from anyone who was successful in obtaining a free stopover hotel room through Etihad.

    • I understand the program but confused on how you go about booking it.

From their website it says book your flights first then enter your ticket details to book the stopover.

But when booking your flights, do you select your flights with the 2 nights in Abu Dhabi in mind?
Or do you book your flights directly to your destination city and then when you utilise the stopover package, they automatically change your flight outbound from Abu Dhabi to be 2 days later?

Don't want to be in a situation where a hotel is not available and then you're stuck and need to pay out of pocket for accommodation on those nights.

With the recent Chinese airline deals and now this, hopefully we're now seeing flight prices return to a more normal level as after all the travel restrictions ended, flight prices have been stubbornly high.

The more competition we get from now, the more prices should continue to fall.

    • +1

Don't know if it's just me but I'm certainly seeing more flight deals come through which is great.

  • Surely to hell the airlines are losing money on these cheap fares? That works out to $337 per leg, and each leg is around 10000km.

    • prolly Loss leading to embarass Albo & co into opening up more airport slots

    • +2

With modern aircraft, fuel usage is about 2.5 litres per passenger per 100km, so 10000km is 250 litres. UAE is also a major petroleum-producing country, so fuel is cheap for them.

Also factor in that the airlines buy fuel in quantities of millions of litres, so they get bulk-buying discount. One fill for a plane, say a 787, is over 100,000 litres.

The current price for jet fuel, in Australia, is 0.543USD(=0.82AUD) per litre. It's currently the same price in the UAE.

      Pricing from https://jet-a1-fuel.com/

Also, while you are roughly correct for the Sydney to Abu Dhabi leg, Abu Dhabi to London is only 5522km. The aircraft do not need to fill up in London, they could do Abu Dhabi - London - Abu Dhabi on one fill.

Using the actual distances, and the rough figure for fuel per passenger per 100km, the fuel cost comes to about 722 AUD.

    • Chinese airlines is doing Europe fares for around $900 return at the moment ($225 per 11-hour leg !)… competitors have to drop prices unless they want to lose significant market share.

      Competition is good

  • +1

    Any good deals from Brisbane?

    • +1

Not at the moment. I am looking though!

  • +1

Brisbane always expensive. Etihad website search random dates February and March showing $8k-12k business against reportedly $6k. Best of luck finding this price for biz.

    • TBF those prices are worth positioning for. suck up the 3hr inconvenience of moving to SYD on a domestic VA and then hop over in J EY.

basically that return flight puts you to gold as well, which is neat.

  • From Melbourne.
