Up to 35% off Fountain Pen Ink (e.g. Ink from $10/30ml Bottle) + Shipping @ Van Diemans Inks

180

It's been a while since I posted a deal for Tassie's own maker of fine fountain pen inks. They'll be introducing some new ranges this year and are clearing out existing stock of current colours, so this is a great opportunity to stock up before they're gone forever. Shipping starts from $10 for standard domestic delivery, but there's a comprehensive breakdown of estimated costs on the web site.

If you're serious about your ink then check out their range of additives & cleaners, or have a look at the Fusion ink mixing kits.

I often get asked what their ink is like. My quick thoughts:

  • Generally well-behaved in pens, smooth flowing, doesn't suffer nib creep too much.
  • Medium dry time, lefties may want to be careful to avoid smearing.
  • Soaks in well on fountain pen friendly papers.
  • Doesn't feather on most papers.
  • Minimal bleed-through, but some thin papers may show shading with darker colours.

  • Good inks, I've used a few of them in cheapie AliExpress fountain pens and they've all worked well

  • How do these inks compare to Noodler's ink? Thanks

    • I'm relatively new to using fountain pens, but from what I've seen they're quite well regarded.

    • +3

They're excellent, without all the anti-semitic connotations attached to them. I used to be a big Noodlers fan, especially the bulletproof inks, but since I've discovered Van Diemans and Robert Oster I've decided I'll stick to ridgey-didge Aussie inks.

On a technical note, like Noodlers you'll find Van Diemans are highly-saturated colours so that means they'll have excellent density and coverage. They are not waterproof, even when dry, so don't expect them to be as permanent - on the other hand, this lends them very well for use in drawing or watercolours (see some of the examples on their web site). I do find Van Diemans dries quicker than most Noodlers so that's great if you're left-handed or write quickly, and helps to avoid 'bouncing' onto other paper that's touching. The colour range is wide and includes a lot of shimmer inks, and they even stock quite a few in 100ml bottles (all Noodlers comes in 100ml sizes). Best of all, Van Diemans is locally made and tends to be a bit cheaper.

      • Thanks for the detailed reply. Do you suggest any options that would be equivalent to royal blue colour please.

  • A fair bit cheaper than Sailor ink.
Might try these guys once i am near finishing my current inks

  • Fountain Pen Pen Ink

Is that like an ATM Machine ?

    • Well, I could argue that it's not Fountain Pen Drawing Ink or Fountain Pen Artist's Ink, but I've played along and removed the superfluous 'Pen' from the title. At the very least it made people look (well, it made you look at least).

      • You seem to be clued in to the ink scene, do you know a good place to buy cheap bulk black stamp pad ink?

        • Sorry, no idea about stamp ink. Normally it will be an oil-based ink whereas fountain pen inks are water-based. Most stationery stores used to carry it but I confess I've not looked for it in years.

  • I am fairly stocked up on ink at the moment but a few of these look beautiful, and good on these people for having a go.
