New Year, New Job! Grass Is Indeed Greener on The Other Side! Employee Loyalty Is Dead!

Remember this? Where my commission is dropping a whopping 80-90%? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/823520

Well after attend an interview last week for a similar role with a different company, I just received a letter of employment today.

Higher Salary base of 25% more than my current job with Step System Commissions on top (which means once I have achieved my monthly sales target I will get an additional 1.5% on top of any sales above my target) I calculated that its not hard to get $5000 a month in commission with this step system.

This is huge huge difference compared to what I will be earning under the current company of $250 to $300 commission on a monthly basis.

Doing a letter of resignation tonight. By the way I am the first one to leave the current company, I have a feeling they will not like this when I hand in the resignation letter tomorrow………………

For those who are stuck in a role they hate, maybe it is indeed to look around and see if grass is greener on the other side.

Plenty of jobs out there in Perth at the moment. (Not sure about other states)

PS:

This is after hand in my resignation

1: asked me to do 6 more weeks instead of 4 weeks but I refused. 4 weeks are my minimum requirement which I see no point of giving them 2 more weeks, why would I after they cut my commission by 90%?

2: found out 2 other staff members has resigned, 1 casual staff effective immediately and one long timer also resigned but I don’t know who

3: was told not to discuss my resignation with anyone until the last day or 2 (even if I do what can they do? I don't need a reference from them as I used a reference from my previous job instead)

4: they made no counter offer (I am certain they made no counteroffer to anyone)

5: was also told I will not be getting any commissions for this month and also been warned not to bump up anyone else’s sale with my client as it will be cancelled if doing so

6: also been explicitly told if taking any sick leave Dr Certificate needs to be produced or no sick pay will be made

7: told not to proactively inform my current client where I am going unless they specifically asked where I went.

I think they still want me to do as much sale as I can. But why should I? I just rock up some days and rest times I be unwell

  • +2

How did the resignation go? Did you tell them why you're leaving?

    • -1

It went surprisingly well, walked in said sorry I am leaving due to commissions changes.

What surprised me was after I handed in my resignation I was told that 2 other people also handed in the resignation before the new year. Which explains why there is a new name on the roster system. I don’t know who is the other guy who left and was informed by the management to keep my resignation to myself and not talk about until the last day or 2.

      No counter offer was made

You said previously the culture was good - not telling your current colleague seems oddly counter to that.

Pretty hard to do any handover, no farewell lunches / cards etc that you might normally expect would happen.

It's also not a realistic expectation. As if you're not going to at least tell some of the coworkers that you're close to and just them just rock up and find out the guy that's been working with them for years is gone.

        • -1

I plan to tell a few people I am close with for sure. I mean at the end of the day, what are they going to do about it? Fine me? Kick me out?

      • +5

Stuff that, I'd be telling everyone. What are they going to do, fire you?!

  • +1

The grass is not always greener on the other side. But sometimes it is the only way to get a pay increase, which is really a shame.

A popular strategy is to jump ship and then come back but this time you get another pay increase. I know of plenty of people who have used this method

    • -1

Well there was no counter offer made. And 2 other people has already resigned, one I know is a casual the other one I am not yet able to find out

      • There won't be a counter offer unless they are really desperate.

You actually start work with the new company and come back at a later time. It's important not to burn any bridges

  • Doing a letter of resignation tonight. By the way I am the first one to leave the current company, I have a feeling they will not like this when I hand in the resignation letter tomorrow………………

Who cares. Don't even think about those people.

    • -1

They lost 3 good employees now myself included. I am certain they didn’t make any counter offers to anyone

      • "everyone's replaceable"
it's true, it's just the difficulty that changes
        .

  • +2

Loyalty has been dead for many years. Worked for previous company for years wouldn’t give me a promotion. Told them I’m leaving, asked to match pay etc I said cya 😂

    • -1

This was after you got a new offer right?

      • Yep! I told them I’m leaving they just panicked.

        • -1

And not able to match the offer?

          • +3

@Aerith-Waifu: Nah I told them to F off politely.

These are the people that suck the life out of you because you are a hard worker and a nice person. They take advantage of you and only do something when they are about to lose ya

  • +3

In a similar situation, high performer but constantly getting dicked around by management. Companies dont understand sales people are highly motivated by $$$.

Cant wait to hand in my resignation, but wont be burning my bridges. Instead I will be targeting all the key clients and making a big dent in their budget.

    • -1

Is it unethical to poach client from your previous employer?

Do you just offer better rates to your clients after a switch?

      • +1

What’s wrong with that? It’s the client who follows the sales consultant especially the sales consultant is good and helpful. Not the other way around

      • +1

Not really, non-compete clauses are worthless unless they have paid you out.

It's a competitive market and clients are fair game. Companies dont understand that end users often follow the sales consultant that get back to them on time.

        • -1

Absolutely! Yet they still think it’s ok to lose their best people and expect the rest of the team to fill the gap. Good sales person are not replaceable

  • +2

Employer loyalty has always been dead. The ascendancy of HR has simply made that obvious for most employees.
When I was young & naive, there was a time when I really thought being an employee was a give/take relationship.
Several years later & having been burned, stitched up, abused, mislead, underpaid, undervalued, overworked, lied to, fed meaningless company propaganda, manipulated, bossed by brainless dickwits and overlooked, I feel I now have their measure.
Trouble is, this epiphany has all come too late……

    • -1

But you moved on since then right?

    • Employer loyalty still exists, just far more rarer.

  • +1

They can't not pay you commission if it's part of terms of employment. If it's in writing send them greetings fot Fairwork

    • +1

I will have a look and see if that was written in the contract or not. Good pick up

      • +3

If they're not paying commission for 4 weeks then what's the point of doing any work?

        • +7

yep I'd just make minimal effort to get sales. play silly games get silly results

    • +1

Employment contract will state commissions may be payable and at the discretion of the company. They never lock themselves into it in a contract

    • Fairwork doesnt give a shit about high incomer earners. Tried that already.

      • +1

Do they class <$78k a high income earner? That's less than average.

  • +3

    Congrats!

Surprised they are making you work the 4 weeks. I’ve been in sales my whole career & rare they don’t tell you to just pack your things and go on gardening leave. As a sales person, you have no incentive to make anymore sales and it just becomes a long 4 weeks

    • +3

100%, and your bitterness etc can affect the staff around you, or you start promoting how much better pay you're getting etc

And poaching customers to the new employer

    • -1

Well we are short of staff at the moment, I bet you when I go back after my sick leave, they will put me on admin or warehouse duties.

  • Yep,

The world has changed since our parents set about "building a career"

Wages have stagnated whilst profits have soared.
Loyal employees are effectively paying the lazy tax whilst side hires jump the pay rungs.

I've spent an average of 2 years in each of my past 3 jobs and am ~25% ahead of where i'd be had i stayed where i was.

    • +2

Profit has soared especially when the 20k super withdraw allowance was made, many companies made a killing during this time. Guess they get used to the profit now all of a sudden they see profit goes flat and some smart higher level management thinks oh wait a min, we can save some money by cutting their commissions.

  • Congrats mate. Hope the year continues to be excellent for you.

  • +3

I would be going to the dr and getting stress leave for four weeks. Thats what i will be doing when i leave my current job i see no point staying when i dont want to be there why should i give them my time for four weeks when they dont value me

  • What kind of sales are you in?

  • Nice, congratulations! One of the most important freedoms we have is our choice of employer. It is often said that those who change jobs every few years, progress their career faster.

  • It's just a job, a means to an end.

    Don't overthink it.

  • +1

Employee "loyalty" is a fallacy invented by Employers to guilt their staff into staying.

There is NO loyalty in business. Business is business! They aren't your friends, they aren't your loved ones, they pay you to do a job and you do it. No pay, no job… and no job, no pay.

I'm glad you've been able to change jobs and be rewarded for your hard work and experience. But their stipulated rules about no sick leave and not talking to people?
No way! They can't control either and should be embarrassed they even asked.

Get a doctors certificate and ram it down their throat. They can't question you on your condition either. Asses.

  • Take the whole month off as sick leave. Go get doctors certs.

Illness is both physical and mental. Doctors won’t hesitate to give you a doctors cert
