I've been keeping an eye out for this scanner for the purposes of digitising archived records (ie. invoices, logistics chain of responsibility documents, etc). This product is probably one of the most highest rated for the SME market for the price range.

Primary feature is its OCR capability for automatically creating searchable PDF's, for easily managing and finding documents. To get the most use out of it, combine it with a document management system like FolderIt.

It was discounted to approx $730 last week on amazon AU (https://www.amazon.com.au/ScanSnap-scanning-Automatic-Touchs…) it has now reduced to price match other stores with the product on sale at both Umart ($669 + 9.95 shipping) and MWave ($659 + $11 shipping)

According to CamelCamelCamel the cheapest price has been $639 in 2022 - https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B08QCTS33K?cpf=amazon….

$508 is the cheapest by far, but please note it is an import from Japan so a power adapter may be required.
There is a 1-3 week shipping delay so I'm still waiting for mine to arrive before I can confirm.

  • Has Ricoh taken over Fujitsu? I love my Fujitsu scansnap, it's going strong after 15yrs still!

    • Yeah they were taken over / merged in 2022, and in 2023 started the re-branding process.

To be honest, probably not the best move as Fujitsu as a brand has a better reputation than Ricoh which the only thing I know that brand for was cheap CDs to burn on to.

      • "Ricoh which the only thing I know that brand for was cheap CDs to burn on to."

they also make very good compact camera's. even certain older models are popular because they take good photos and don't break. they are often overlooked because compact camera's are unpopular to begin with (everyone seems to jump straight to DSLR).

Excellent scanner and a bloody good price. I pulled the trigger on an Epson FF-680W a while back and it still cost more than this. I would much prefer the screen and scan to network directly on this one. Good find OP!

Yeah - I have the ix1500 and love it. I can't see much reason to upgrade though - the scan to network directly would be nice but I believe that the functionality is limited. OCR is done via the ScanSnap Home software so you don't get a searchable pdf if you do direct to network folder (anecdotally heard that at least, can't find any documentation stating that).

      • I can vouch. I scan with fujitsu Scansnap, directly onto a networked imac folder (ie. Dropbox folder that is synced).

Every document is scanned as searchable PDF instantly.

I don't scan-to-cloud directly as I like to rename the folder straight away, etc.

        • Who is doing OCR when you scan into network shared folder?

          • @SickDmith: I should clarify. I have the scanner attached to an imac that is set up as a home server. The imac is set up with the Fujitsu software and does the OCR.

That folder is synced on Dropbox.

"I pulled the trigger on an Epson FF-680W"

I snagged a ES-500WR for $399 (it has been lower, it dropped to around $350 right after I bought it) and it has been a workhorse (named WorkForce lol). after noticing both FF-680W and ES-500WR look identical I did a tonne of research and discovered they are, only the FF comes with more advanced photo scanning software.

there are small differences/niggles in each user manual one I remember being the FF-680 claims to support/take certain thicker originals, but in my use the ES-500WR eats up anything it managed old family polaroids just fine. I think they are 1:1 identical just the marketing is different.

if anything I thought the "office workforce" version might even be more durable long term but I guess you will have to take them both apart to find that out. I assume they are 1:1.

also no issues scanning old photos for me the photo scanning quality is brilliant. at least all I wanted to achieve was photos scanned as they are so accurate 100% with no enhancement (don't need the photo software included with FF-680). I just had to tweak the contrast and maybe adjust the gamma by something like 0.1 and I got perfect results couldn't be happier.
double feed detection also works a treat for documents, and you can turn it off to scan stacks of uneven thickness or extremely thick originals. towards the end I got sick of sorting by thickness so I had a few more or less the same size and just put them in the tray and turned double feed detect off and it ate them up.

I can recommend the Epson ES-500WR when it goes on sale it's been doing duties for 3+ years with no signs of slowing down or wear. even after putting through the curved polaroids there isnt a single scratch on the scanning element (you will notice this because lines will start to appear in scans). I didn't want "smartphone photo like enhancement" anyway so the FF-680 didn't make sense at $200 to $300 more.

the only maintenance I do is keeping it closed when not being used and wiping off the dust with a cloth once in awhile.

  • My wireless Epson Workforce 60 cost me under $200 and has been fantastic, super compact to and the app is handy.

  • Check this Brother ADS-1700W

    • Anyone experienced both Fujitsu and Brother software?
      Which one is better?

  • Does it do photo negatives?
