After seeing the deal on the Hisource 8 Port 2.5Gbps + 10Gbps SFP switch I went looking for other budget switches with 2.5Gbps/SFP ports and came across this 5 port one for a good price. Unlike the Hisource this one comes with an AU plug as a bonus.

This one features 5 2.5Gbps RJ45 ports with 1Gbps backwards compatiblity and a single 10Gbps SFP+ port. The switch is unmanaged and has a metal housing instead of a cheap TP-Link plastic.

As with other low budget 2.5Gbps switches this one is identical on the inside to the MokerLink that Server at Home reviewed here. These are an excellent choice for those running their own homelab or home network with a faster connection. I personally have my NAS drives and PCs on a 2.5Gbps network for faster local transfer speeds.

What are 2.5gb nics going for these days?

    • +8

They can be bought very cheap if you shop around. This Fenvi one for example is about US$11 and uses the Intel i226 chipset.

      • +2

Second this - I got one of these Fenvi i226 cards and it's been perfect under both Windows and Linux.

Don't cheap out on the cards. I've got a i225-V3 card and it's crap.

        • Thanks for the info, wasn't aware of the differences.

        • what's the differences with i225-V3 & i226?

          • @impoze: The i225 had various firmware bugs. V3 supposedly fixed that, but the card I have with i225-V3 just randomly disappears under both linux and windows. It could be a faulty unit I guess, but why take the chance?

        • hey mate, what driver are you using for these? I'm just having some trouble with the intel installer for driver 28.3

      • To make use of this I would also need a USB 2.5G adaptor. Anyone have any recommendations for that?

    • maybe SMB Multichannel? I will try 2.5G *2.

    • +8

It's not uncommon to see you calling something crap in a deal with a heap of negs.

      • im also incredibly helpful, tell you the truth

        • +2

          Or bloody unlucky.

    • +12

A true OzB'er - still posting here from beyond the grave.

      • +1

        Hysterical… you made my day!

    • -1

Why people negged this comment? Sharing own factual experience became offensive these days?

Or is it in line with OzBargan AUP to neg the person and not the content of the comment?

      • +9

Perhaps my reply didn't make sense. He's notorious for bagging out deals and this is easily another attempt. The chances of someone purchasing this niche product that's never been shared here before is unlikely.

Happy to be proven otherwise if there is factual evidence they ordered one.

        • -3

Unlikely but not impossible, still does not deserve all the negative votes.

BTW it seems that you are accusing him of lying and justifying negative votes based on that. Still I disagree that ad hominem is valid cause for neg vote on comment

          • +4

@dr: There really are no rules on negging comments.

    • +4

I bought an 8 port 2.5G switch few months ago - the power supply failed on it - bought a new one on amazon for $21'ish (was on special) that was multi voltage and the switch was back to operational status. It might be your switch is fine but the power supply needs to be changed (and the power supply they provide by default is probably the cheapest crappiest they can get).

    • I have 2 of these and they've been totally stable.
But they're just like all the other Realtek budget switches, I think there's 2 OEMs that make them all.

And 2.5Gbe is totally worth it.

  • Out of stock ?
    Can't seem to order

    • Still working here.

      • Hmmm it might be because I'm trying to buy 3. It defaults to 1.

  • Just ordered 1, tks 👌🏽

  • Networking noob here, but what's the point of having 1x 10Gbps SFP port, if all the other ports max at 2.5Gbps?

    • +4

10Gb NAS can serve the other ports at (near) their max bandwidth concurrently.

      • +2

I've never used the word concurrently in a sentence and I would one day like to do so.

        • I wish you luck in your endeavour.

    • +1

If you have 3 devices transmitting data each at 2.5 you'll saturate a 2.5 port, but not a 10

    • +4

The 10Gig port is used as an uplink to another switch. It needs to be "fatter" to handle all the traffic from the other ports. It's not likely that many people have use for 10Gig or even 2.5Gig in a home environment, but at this kind of price it's the same price or even cheaper than a 1Gig switch.

  • +1

So i'll need to put a 2.5g nic in my Unraid box and my desktop.

What about to the router? Or is 1g enough with a 100/40 connection

    • +4

100Mb is one tenth of 1Gb.
Who knows when residential NBN will exceed 1Gbps?

    • +1

You'll need a 2.5G card in your desktop and NAS if you want the transfer speeds.. Your HDD will then likely become the bottleneck if you are still using traditional HDDs

      • Yep, ordered 2x 2.5g nic that Clear linked above

Using the ssd cache in unraid so hopefully get some faster throughput woth read/writes

  • +3

If anyone wants a managed switch then you have the Horaco brand switch for ~$135: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005943823096.html

For 99% of people though, the unmanaged switch from this deal is more than enough.

    • That looks great, thanks! If you have one, do you know what kind of power consumption you're getting? The listing says max 24w but I'll always take real world measurements if people have them :)

      • Sorry, don't have one of those (my needs are pretty simple). I do have one of their unmanaged 4 port switches and it's been solid so far.

    • Nice —- I have an existing unmanaged 8 port 2.5G switch but this looks very tempting as my other switch 16 port 1gb is managed and I admit I like having visibility of whats going on rather than having to get on my hands and knees under a table to check the led indicators..

      • What about latency?

    • Any recommendations for managed switches with PoE+ ports pls? To be used with ReoLink cams.

  • +1

Thanks, grabbed one. Have a NAS with 10gbe SPF+ ports and a desktop PC with 2.5gbe NIC, but have only been using a 1gbe connection. Have been thinking of upgrading for ages, so this is perfect.

  • Getting Out of Stock when ordering.

  • Would love a managed switch with a dozen 2.5Gbps, a couple of 10Gb SFP+ and a few ports PoE, and something thats low idle watts. Feel we are nearly there with these SMB switches and can retire my modded Cisco (to kill the raging fan)

  • 8 port is also not that bad in price
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005823244914.html

  • any of these cheap and nasty switches that do POE?

    • -1

i had the POE version of this, worked fine but the switches automatically died and only would do 100mbps instead of gigabit speeds. seems its a bit hit or miss

    • +2

      Somethink like https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006067797610.html

There is lots of similar designs based on a Realtek chipset, but IMO Management features are a bit lacking, so I can't move there just yet. I'm waiting to see the designs with the MaxLinear MxL86282 (8 x 2.5 + 2 x 10Gb), with a bit of management. Throw in PoE for a couple of ports, that would be sweet.

    • +2

I have several of these Keeplink switches.. including this one.

      https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005981050985.html?pdp_npi…

all performing perfectly so far and fanless which is great
The above also has a standard PC cable with an internal PSU.. Also came with rack ears for mounting in a server rack

  • Add some 2.5Gb ports to my 10Gb/1Gb switch for $40, can't go wrong!

  • Thanks, got one

  • +1

Even though this says expired, I was able to get one about an hour ago.

Weird thing though is that the price in the OP (which for me was converted to $37 AUD) only worked via the web. When I opened it in the AliExpress app, it went to $60…

    • +1

Same here. I was only able to buy one though, was hoping to get two :(

      • Same issue here, I had to make a second account to order a second switch.

  • +2

received my 2.5Gbe fenvi nics, now just waiting on the switch which should arrive tomorrow

  • +1

Got my switch today. Works well - no idea why people would pay $100+ for a tp-link when a $40 switch does the same job.

And it's an actual AU plug (not a EU or US plug with an adapter).

    • Apparently I ordered a UK plug….sigh. good to know others got Aussie

    • +1

Update: My switch is now dead after 2 days. Could just be a one-off bad unit, but you never know.

      • It's probably just the power supply - the ultra-cheap ones (like this came with) are generally unreliable !

        • +1

I tried another power supply, and still dead.

Ended up getting a refund from aliexpress.

  • Got mine. Very neat packaging.

  • Mine also arrived today. Working well. Initial impressions very good, total steal for the price.
