The new one is easier to put together though and looks almost identical to the old one imo

Ikea may be a Swedish company, but they operate like a Chinese one - they are constantly endeavoring to reduce cost and quality, resulting in inferior items that end up in landfill all too soon. There is a book about this: "Cheaply made in China".

Billy's aren't proper bookcases. They are just particleboard crap (sawdust particles held together by superglue), like almost everything else at Ikea. The shelves bow considerably when you load them full of books. Really, they are only suitable as display cabinets for framed photographs, action figures, souvenirs and so on.
On top of what others have said, bear in mind that people are literally giving these away for free, and in excellent condition. This time last year, within a month, I collected four Billy bookcases off Gumtree/FB Marketplace. Got very efficient at dismantling them, in and out in 30 mins. Feels good - avoids waste, and free.
They should do besta
