Low price on this 2TB M.2 2230 sized SSD for those looking to upgrade the storage in their Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, Surface Pro 9, X, Surface Laptop 3, 4, Go, Surface Book 3 and more.

Since this is a Gen4 SSD you shouldn't use it with the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro 7+ due to stability issues. Both of these have no issues with Gen3 SSDs.

This one offers a sequential read up to 5150 MB/s, sequential write up to 4850 MB/s and uses Toshiba BiCS5 112l TLC flash. Unfortunately 2230 sized SSDs don't have DRAM cache, but this one does use pSLC cache and HMB to make up for it so it's perfectly fine for gaming. Especially when a lot of other similar SSDs are QLC.

juicy tlc chips like potato and garlic

  • Wow thats a good price, picked up a 1TB for $90 earlier and thought that was a good buy. Damn.

    • Which 1TB did you pick up? Was it the 1TB option from the same seller?

      • +2

Oh looking through my cart it was actually. It was a samsung listed as ~2500rw 1TB but my laptop gets ~3000rw using winsat in the cmd and it is the correct size (well, ~950gb) and brand correctly displays in cmd as well. (I was replacing a 512gb 1500rw speed card in my laptop, seriously it was so old lmaaao so am very happy)

  • Anyone got a recommendation on a 2TB+ regular SSD?

    • +1

what do you need it for an what's your budget?

The 980 pro is pretty decent bang for buck and can be found for a decent price out of sale
      https://www.amazon.com.au/SAMSUNG-Internal-Gaming-MZ-V8P2T0B…

otherwise I've seen the WD Black SN850X go as low at $200 (2TB) during sales. And the 990 Pro will also hit sub $220 (2TB) during sales - they're the best performing drives you can get.

      • Nah sorry I mean like a regular 2.5" SSD for a PS4. I paid around $60 last year for a 1TB QVO and now they're all up around $150 so imagine my shock when I went to go buy the 2TB and it was $250, I have no idea what happened to the prices. Budget is around the $150 mark where I found a Crucial BX500 and Patriot Burst Elite but never heard of either of them and don't know if they're good or not

        • +1

Ahh right. Those are called SATA III SSD (2.5"). If it's for the PS4 I'd say just go with the cheapest, any would be fine for that. And buy local so you get the warranty. Here's one from scorptec for $150, but you could check umart, mwave or even amazon if you want to.

          https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/hard-drives-&-ssds/solid-state-drives-(ssd)/85285-wds200t2g0a

I'm not sure why prices on these haven't dropped, I don't think they're very popular/common anymore as they've kind of hit the ceiling in terms of performance, and M.2 nvme is far superior and is available in most devices made in the last 5 or so years.

To be honest I'd put that money towards a PS5 though, or perhaps an external nvme with enclosure and then plug it USB it into your PS4.

          https://www.amazon.com.au/WD_BLACK-SN770-Internal-Gaming-Sol…
You could get these 2x products on sale for about the same price (if you wait for a sale), and that SSD would work in a PS5 if/when you upgrade

  • Got one, thanks 🙏

  • Would this be suitable for a regular PC? I got an old gaming pc from a friend but it only has. 256gb ssd, so I’m looking to add something to increase storage.

I believe the slot in the PC is suitable for Gen 3 Nvme 2280

    • +6

I'd hold out for a regular sized M.2 NVMe SSD due to a lot of them having DRAM cache and easy warranty if you buy local.

      • +1

Thanks for the reply. Very much appreciated :)

  • Still trying to hodl until 4tb's are sub 200

    • +8

      There's no such thing as a 4TB 2230 SSD.

  • Any deals on B-Key SSDs ?

    I have an Intel NUC,
and just wondering about expanding the storage.

  • Anyone know if this will work with a 2017 Macbook? Google searches are inconclusive.

    • +1

If you know your actual model number it's a lot easier to work out what will fit. "2017 Macbook" has a lot of models.

      • Sorry mate, good shout! It's an A1708 pre-touch bar model. Old Reddit threads lead me to believe that maybe only certain drives will work…
        https://www.reddit.com/r/macbook/comments/r6f21g/a1708_ssd_u…

        • +2

Definitely seems to be issues according to this forum with certain SSDs like the SN720. With this one using Toshiba (Kioxia) flash it might be ok but unsure.

          • @Clear: Just reading about the Kioxia drives. Might head down that direction instead. The old macbook is working fine just need a bit more space than the 128gb standard drive haha

    • +1

It won't work out of the box on any 2015-2016 (A1708) MacBook models. You need an adaptor as Apple changed the key shape so standard NVMe drives do not fit.

Here's a MacRumors forum post about the best adaptors. I was going to go down this path but ended up buying a used Apple NVMe instead because I couldn't be bothered fiddling around with any of the possible incompatibilities.

      • +1

Good shout! I’ve done a bit of research on it now and it seems like the best option is the official Apple stuff.

  • This shouldn't have any issues with surface laptop 5 @Clear?

    • +1

Should be ok. Uses the same sized SSD.

  • How do I ensure I an bot getting a fake one and if I do how much problem to go through to get a refund?

Nah I pay a little more and buy local.

    • I've never heard of a fake WD SN740 before. No one has ever complained in all the previous deals.

    • You can at least check the Serial Number.

      https://support-en.wd.com/app/warrantystatus

It won't have oem warranty but at least shows its a real drive and not a fake.

I'm currently loading my ROG Ally games onto this same SSD, from the same seller, delivered last week (I was away camping).
I think delivery took about 10days to Perth, WA.
No issues so far, I paid $176 +GST +del ($196 total), if this is $166 Delivered, its an absolute bargain.

    • Did you have to reinstall windows or somehow clone it over? I’m in the same boat.

    • Same question, what cloning software did you use. Or did you do a factory reset?

    • +1

I just did a fresh windows image through the ally's bios. The process was as simple as finding the option in the advanced menu and following it through. took ages though, like 2-3 hours i believe. Then re-installing games. Mine was a recent purchase (Christmas) so I wasn't too butt-hurt about having to repeat the process.

I recently replaced the main ssd on my laptop, and went a completely different route, which would probably work just as well using Hasleo Backup Suite. Only problem being you would need atleast 3 m.2 slots, to install both drives into your PC and still be able to boot. From memory, the free version wouldn't allow you to clone to or from a usb connected drive. Wouldn't work for me, as both my computers only have 2 ports, one being the boot drive.

  • Deal link is page not found for me. Anyone else?

    • +1

If you have a VPN or anything masking your location that'll be the culprit. Starlink can cause issues too.

      • Using my work PC which has some kind of location obfuscation. I'll try another machine.

        • That'll do it. Otherwise your phone will work.

  • But confused by this 2230 designation. Is it a model number? I guess I'm wondering do these fit regular M2 nvme slots or are they specialised and if so is there some designation that applies to a regular M2 nvme slot/drive.

    • +5

It's the physical size of the SSD. Most normal M.2 SSDs are M.2 2280, while devices like the Steam Deck will only fit M.2 2230.

    • +4

It's the size - 22mm wide x 30mm long. A "regular" m.2 nvme ssd is 2280 (22mm wide x 80mm long). You can look up charts, or you could look at your devices manual for the exact length of your m.2 nvme slot. You're paying extra for these as they're a lot smaller. 2280's are much cheaper because they're larger

      • +2

Finally some model/series numbers that actually make sense!

  • +4

Thanks, been looking to upgrade the Steamdeck for a while now!

  • +1
  • Isnt this the model you can use in xbox series diy expansion

    • That's the WD SN530 M.2 2230

  • Perfect, thanks grabbed one for my steam deck! bargain

  • Is the 1tb model of this just as good? I wouldn't need the full 2TB. Some product lines the smaller drives have slower speeds etc, so wanted to check with the brains trust. Going in a steam deck

    • +1

You don’t need the extra 1TB until you do.

      • +2

I caved. Bought the 2tb. The 1tb didn't ship from the same store, and looking around, cheapest was about $100. So decided to pay the extra to get the 2tb. Worked out to be $165.60 after conversion to AUD.

        • Hi @Eatoff,

What is your experience with those ssd? Are they good?

          • @discounthunter2024: Delivery was pretty quick, installed easy, works well. No complaints, would recommend.

  • Is this faster than the ROG Ally’s standard SSD?

  • Just received mine today. It’s tiny. And to think I was trying to buy a 3.5” HDD closure to resuscitate my old 4tb drive… Guess it’s time to drop them off at Officeworks. Amazing times to be alive.
