Travel on Jetstar: Seating

Hello Everyone…

Basic question….Travelling to Japan this year…on Jetstar :(.

There are 3 of us….me…wife and kid (10 yo). Does anyone know if Jetstar will seat at least one of us with the kid as a matter of policy? I dont mind if we are not all together, but I would like if one of us was seated next to the kid..

Anyone know ?

Yes they will. A minor cannot be seated with a random

    • This post says otherwise.

Having said that I think there is a high probability that you will be seated altogether. Seats on the plane are in a 3-3-3 configuration.

      • Here is the actual regulation by CASA but airlines will seat at least one parent with a child so if there’s an emergency they child can be helped

        Families, children and infants
Airline seat allocation procedures for family groups, children and infants aims to seat children close to their parents or guardians.

These procedures aim to seat young children and infants travelling with adults in the same seat row segment as their parent or guardian.

Where this is not possible, an airline might separate children by no more than one seat row or aisle away from their accompanying adults.

This allows adults to reach their children quickly during an emergency evacuation.

The airline should try to make sure accompanying adults are supervising groups of infants and children when they are travelling together.

In fairness that post seems to have one of jv's all-time-best:

        How old is the child

        32

    • A minor (young adult) can sit anywhere they want. For a few dollars, you can have them seated at the opposite end of the plane to you.
But a child, no. Under-12s must sit with you.

Once I added a child to a trip separately from the original booking, and they were allocated a seat away from me. I just had to get there a bit early, and it was sorted at the gate.
      No payment needed.

Where to? The view from the gate after the plane is canceled?? 🤣🤣🤣

  • A quick Google search would give you the answer.

We do our best to seat families together when we allocate seating and we’ll make sure that young children are seated with a parent or guardian, but we can’t guarantee you’ll be all together. That’s why it’s best to select your seats when you book your flights.

If only there was a way to ensure the 3 of you were sitting together………….

So much this. Such a simple and straight forward process. Buy a private plane.

Can get a good deal on a Boeing 737 Max 9 at the moment.

Why don't you just select seats?

    • To save money, duhhhhh

  • Whats wrong with sitting the wife with the child in economy and the husband sits up the front?

  • Have done this a few times and can confirm that Jetstar will seat at least one of the adults with the child when you check in at the counter. If you do online check in the cabin crew will shuffle seats around so there is no unaccompanied minor.

The cost to select seats is nothing compared to the anxiety of not being sure of your seats the weeks/days/hours before you fly.

    • I dont mind what seats are allocated as long as my kid is sitting with one of us. seat allocation is about $50 per person per journey leg. I dont think it is worth paying that. As long as my kid is next to one of us (as confirmed) thenI am OK!!

      • $50? Are you sure? That seems a lot higher then it should be.

Are you sure you aren't looking at the packages?

  • Arrive early so when they begin desk check-in, there will be more chance of 3 seats together - though they may be located at the back of the plane. If you find you're separated, you could ask flight attendants to ask your neighbour to swap seats. But before landing you should return to your original seat.

  • I asked the same question about a month ago here:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/818866

Was so surprised that the majority thought not bending over to the airline companies and paying to reserve seats was somehow being cheap!

Anyway, i ended up on an exit seat and wife and kids sat a couple of rows behind and i swapped seats with my wife for a bit during the flight.. was ideal for both us to have a beer in peace.

In short, they will have to sit the kid next to one of you for safety reasons. Just go to check in counter early to make everyone’s life easier.
