  • I'm really useless with these things - can someone please just point me in the right direction with this deal:
I've been paying $45 a month for a Telstra plan I barely use and I'm really sick of it; can I just hop onto Kogan, cancel my Telstra plan (have had it for 3-4 years) and voila?
What are the differences between physical and eSim? Is the eSim more final? Thank you!

    • +2

If you are not in the contract term anymore then yes, you can buy something like this without financial penalty from Telstra.

During the sign up process, the Telco will ask if you want to transfer your number from another provider, and you select "Yes" and provide other details it asks you, such as phone number, type of service (prepaid/post-paid), current carrier etc.

Once the transfer is initiated you'll likely get a SMS from your current carrier asking you to confirm the release of your number to the new carrier. You'll then wait patiently for the new carrier to email you to let you know the port was successful/unsuccessful, then to insert their sim if successful.

You should then also make sure the final bill from Telstra is correct.

In terms of physical vs esim, read this

      • Thank you for your help, this helps!

All good, and if you know exactly how much data you use in a year you could look into annual prepaid plans which can end up being very economical https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/prepaid-mobile-plan

My current go to is Woolworths Mobile as I shop there and they give their customers one 10% off shop per month which is substantial if you can do a big shop every month. I know many families who end up saving more than the phone plan cost each year. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/824194

          • @currentfad: I have just read that Boost piggybacks on Telstra's network, which would be probably better for me (living in regional VIC). I can see they often have offers thanks to your link. Thank you!

I've been paying $45 a month for a Telstra plan

I assume from that dollar amount that you're on Telstra pre-paid, in which case it's your DOB that needs to be provided for the port to be successful. But if I'm wrong and you're actually on a Telstra post-paid plan, it's your Telstra Customer ID that you'll need to enter in the Account Number field, not your Telstra account number.

Also, are you aware of the coverage and performance differences between the Telstra (Retail) and Vodafone networks where you intend to use it? It doesn't matter how much cheaper it is if it doesn't actually work. :D

      • Very good point that I did check, if I went with Boost I would be doing alright as they are using the Telstra network.
In regards to what you were saying, thank you for giving me this information; I'm on a Telstra monthly plan of $45. I'm not sure under which plan type that falls under.

What does it refer to your service as in the My Telstra app, or when you login online? It may well be that you are indeed on old $45 per month post-paid plan, and Telstra just hasn't got around to screwing you over by jacking up your monthly payment yet. TBH, I haven't kept abreast of their price increases and timings.

  • Kogan 500Gb, $180 for a year. Appears regularly too

  • does it work if i order 2 x Small sized plan - 10GB per month under 1 kogan account?

  • Wtf I just started Kogan yesterday why wasn't this a boxing day sale thing smh

Beware, in the Plan Information & Terms it says - " No Lock-in contract, but plan will auto-renew and recharge monthly from the date of purchase at the following prices (Small – $15 Per Month, Medium – $25 Per month, Large – $40 per month). Cancel anytime by calling the Kogan Mobile Customer Service Team."

So it seems auto-recharge is turned on by default and there's no way to turn it off in your account. Is this true? Is it difficult to cancel after 1 month and port to another provider?

    • Just use a card which you don't use, and they can never charge you.

      • +1 for this. I keep a cancelled credit card around with a valid expiry for these kind of things. Very handy for any auto renewals!

  • If I want to start this today and not wait for shipping, is it possible to order the plan online and get a $2 SIM from the supermarket to set it up?
