Do these automatically reduce my body weight, if not ill keep using my $10 one from BigW

At $215.40 thats one grocery worth of food you will forgo. So you might lose some weight then.

Think I'll stick to me ~$30 Renpho

    • +2

Yeah I'm not sure about the appeal of spending 200 bucks (on sale might I add!?) on a bio-impedance scale when the Renpho will do the same thing.

The values in muscle/fat mass will differ, but you should be looking at the trends instead of the values.

i measure the water displacement when i go for a bath to get my weight. its free

      Easy now archimedes.

    • That's the volume?

Won't give you high accuracy body fat. No electric scales do.

    • My Withings body+ was within 1% of a dexa scan.

      • How much was a dexa scan?

        • I just had one and it was about $90, ~$15 after PHI

        • Paid $49 about a year ago but that was because i had been there before and didnt need a detailed explanation of results.

          • @8azinga: Thanks, 1% is close enough for me

            • @ATTS: It probably depends on a lot of factors as to whether it is accurate for you so probably best to do 1 dexa to compare and also check with scales several times that day as that can also vary the results. It's not the specific numbers that should matter to most, it is the trend of whether it is going up or down. Even if it is off, they seem to be consistently off if you measure at the same time of day each time.

Have also used an Omron scale that has a sensore that you hold on to as well but that was 6 or 7% more than the dexa. That wasnt done on the same day as dexa but still only a few days between.

      • Lol at the person who negged my comment. See the comparison below

      • So was my $20 Eufy. I think it was mostly luck and highly dependant on being and average build.

    • Copy/paste from below.

In absolute terms they are not accurate. But short of an MRI or dissection all body composition measures are flawed to some degree.

But in relative terms their measurements can be very useful. They are particularly valuable if the measurements are taken frequently and consistently so as to cancel out the deviations you'll see from hydration levels. Wifi scales are brilliant for this reason.

I've been using the 'basic' withings body weight scales for over a year now, in conjunction with dexa scans for composition.

I'm going to upgrade to the composition scales now so that I can observe the relative change of my body fat percentage over time, not for an accurate absolute reading.

Be aware these are a now-discontinued version of this device - new versions have a colour screen. See https://support.withings.com/hc/en-us/articles/1461202889806…

    • None the less I'm pleased that they intend to roll out many of the new features to the old model.

  • These are actually good if you're a data driven person. Its nice to have the data auto wifi sync and the app has neat trend graphs to motivate you.

will they still work when withings goes bust/sells up/moves on?

  • I like that fact it uses wifi to transmit data. No need for your phone's bluetooth.

  • paying more won't lower those body fat numbers

  • No handles

    • +2

The one who steps on the weigh scales got (love) handles.

  • I'd love to see the evidence proving that these scales can accurately measure body fat.

    • Not taking "trust me bro?" As evidence?

It likely wont be this accurate for everybody but here is my comparison with a dexa scan. 15.2% vs 15.0%
Scales are Withings Body+, not the ones in this deal.
The scale seems to have missed my measurements on the day of the dexa or was an issue with the dates because i definitely checked the same day and was 15.x%
Omron scales i tested previously were 6-7% off though but at least they seemed consistent.

  • There's not much this model provide more than Body+ while the latter 's often on sale for $99.
