No way Jose, the subwoofer makes a huggggeeeee difference. Don't stinge out on a basic 2.1 system, otherwise you're missing out on half the sound. It'd be like going to Vivid but you're colour blind. Even a $64 logitech 2.1 speaker system would blow this out of the water.

      • you are right, the logitech z623 blows 99% of anything in its price range or even double of its price range out of the water, that is if you don’t care about connectivity like bt or hdmi etc

Much better sound from a pair of bookshelf speakers.

    • unless getting Sub with them like TCL deal for $100

I don’t see the point of soundbars with less than 3.1 channels.

I’d want at the very least the centre channel for dialogue.

    • +3

The center channel is no assurance of good voice clarity. I've used a Samsung T650 (3.1) that has horrible vocal clarity.

On the contrary, Bose has dialogue boost with 2 channel soundbars (Bose TV Speaker) that have better clarity.

    • Not sure how loading up more microscopic drivers is going to help with dialogue, regardless of positioning.

      • For media that supports it, having a device in the centre of the soundstage, playing audio in the centre channel, usually helps with dialogue. Most dynamic media like movies is mixed with at least stereo and mono sound sources, and 9/10 times, speech sits in (or mostly in) centre, whereas other loud things like cars, explosions, music and effects are in the sides.

Having a centre channel to play that mono, centre audio can often significantly help us hear speech, as without it, we only get the 'echoes' from left/right (staring hard at you, Nolan) - of course, that said, your media source needs to come with that mix, the sender (like your TV channel of choice) needs to send that, your device(s) need to support and properly play it, and yes, your speakers need to be good enough to make it sound not like garbage. In summary it's likely that it will significantly help, even having a crappy speaker there, but very possible that it won't help much or at all. YMMV.

You’ll understand once you hear the difference.

Movies and TV shows haven’t been mixed for stereo since the 90s.

Down mixing the dialog channel to left and right means the dialog gets “lost” in the left and right channels.

Notice so many people watch stuff with subtitles now days because they can’t understand what the actors are saying? It’s because of down mixing.

        • My take on it is that soundbars are just so bad that adding more drivers is like lipstick on a pig. More might be 'better', but it's still coming from a really bad baseline. This opinion is just based on demoing in stores as I am unwilling to spend over a thousand dollars on what I consider flawed design.

If this is happening, I'd say it's first a problem of crappy little drivers placed right on top of a reflective surface (the TV cabinet) so you get instant first order reflection problems. It's just an instant guarantee for muddy sound.

(Or, pretty much what Sam says above)

Most soundbars still have terrible dialogue, even top of the line atmos ones.

    • is there such a thing as a standalone 3 channel Amp?

  • Is it just me or does nowhere list what version the HDMI is?

    • +1

It's in the manual. HDMI 1.4

    • why does it matter? it’s only for audio
