Powkiddy X55 Retro Handheld Game Console US$79 (~A$117.02) Delivered @ Powkiddy

TAKE10

I got this Handheld for Christmas. I was first looking at the Anbernic RG35XX, but went for this as its a bit more powerful. It's less "pocketable", but I play around the house more than anything. It's user preference I guess.

Retro Game Corps starter guide and review.. https://retrogamecorps.com/2023/07/05/powkiddy-x55-starter-g…

With the latest JelOs installed, I've played systems up to and including Psx, also played N64 (Zelda and Mario 64) and dreamcast games as well with no major problems. Next step I am aiming to do is get Bluetooth controllers paired and using it as a console by plugging it into the TV via HDMI.
I've not found the buttons to be that loud or clicky for me. There are modifications you can do to fix that if you are interested (fill the L2 and R2 triggers with glue).

Also… Please note: X55 has added green pre-sale, which will be arranged at the end of this month.

  • Cmon peeps in the know, is this good. Want to play arcade games on it.

    • +1

Depends which arcade games you are talking about. All 80's and 90's arcade classics will play just fine.

  • I've got an X55 and its a great device.

Powerful enough to play anything up to PSP, without too many issues. I have multiple PSP games I play as well but most require a 1x frame skip to be playable.

I would say for the price, this is the best bang for buck if you want a horizontal console.

The only cons for me is that the joystick isn't the best and the shoulder/accessory buttons are a little noisy (there's a fix for some of that) but still can't go wrong with this device. I really enjoy using this.

    • Do the black borders bother you when playing 4:3 content like SNES and Genesis?

Is there a video player app and is it powerful enough to decode 1080p content?

I ended up with the R36S. It was under $70 from Aliexpress and my first emulator. I just want to play mostly PS1 games.

    • +1

Same here. Was looking at X55 but with the depreciation on these devices, and companies cloning Anbernic and Powkiddy at a lower price, it just isn't worth spending more.

      Same . R36S is great

    • R36S owner here too are you guys using it stock without a custom OS? Are you getting any performance issues with psp? And what is your experience so far.

      • My white R36S just arrived an hour ago. This thing is sweet! Feels very well built. Shoulder buttons are slightly awkwardly place and volume doesn't start until 80% lol.
        Gorgeous screen too.

        PS1 emulation is rock solid.

Hopefully, this lasts me until PS2 emulation is this cheap.

    • Yeah same. Got it during the black friday sales for $44 USD I think. Only really started playing around with it the last few days. Today managed to install GTA Vice City (PC) onto it using PortMaster - a little bit choppy here and there, but completely playable; so good!

  • This is the price of the RG35XX plus right?

    • No, they can be had for $60-70.

    • Quick browse on AliExpress. The Plus is going for $100.

The regular RG35XX is about $70.

      • So cheaper. It seems to be mostly better too right?

        • Sorry mate i skim read your comment and thought you meant the non plus, I would imagine the plus version has a better processor and ram so should play more games.

Heres a great comparison of all the handhelds

I ended up going with the odin 2 pro which plays up to switch for about 400 us delivered with accessories

I have one. It broke after a month. It now has no sound. After 100emails back and forward to Powkiddy they said they would send me new speakers that i would need to install myself. That was two months ago. I feel like i will never get them and/or will not replace it with a new one.
Did like it when it worked though. Although i Couldn’t play fighting games as was to hard to do fireballs and dragon punches with the dpad.

Thanks. You saved me a purchase.

      • R36S or RG35XX or Miyoo Mini.

        • Don't ignore the r33s if you aren't after thumb sticks

          • @scottySK: Must be really new. Can't find any YouTube reviews on it. Only on Reddit.

There is no after sales service from Powkiddy. I purchased an X55 from them on Aliexpress and it arrived with a broken screen. They refused a return and Aliexpress only offered a partial refund as the device still has some value apparently.

A credit card charge back got me my refund but cost me my Aliexpress account.

      • You might be able to buy a replacement screen and install it yourself. Are you sure its the screen?

    • They won't replace the unit. You might need to prompt them some more for the replacement speakers. These Chinese handheld companies aren't the best with after sales service, but Powkiddy are probably the worst of the lot. I wouldn't buy from them unless you're willing to make repairs yourself. Retroid are probably the best from my experience.

Are you sure it's a speaker issue? I got an RGB30 and it had a sound issue that was software based.

You might be able to mod the D-Pad to be better as well.

The r36s was ~$60 recently during 11.11 sales, probably better value than the x55 honestly. I think software support has also ended for x55 but there's still an active community pushing updates to ArkOS to the r36s

    • X55 JelOS software is still supported/active and most recent release was just 12th Dec 2023.

      • The JelOS dev team put out an official post on their discord only a few weeks ago that they will no longer be working with x55 and other devices with the same chipset

        • +1

That's not true. They said they were pausing, until they found someone to take over. Which they did 3 days later. RK3566 devices still have JelOS support.

  • Anyone got theirs yet? If so how are you finding it?

    • Doh. Cause I added an AliExpress link, my comment was unpublished.
Anyways, I'm still enjoying mine. Getting my FF8 craving sorted out. Just also got some scummvm games working this morning too.
Bought a protective sleeve from AliExpress which fits snug. It's a switch lite protective sleeve. Was like $5 from AliExpress.

      • Thanks for sharing! Got my ROMs ready to go, and a whole bunch of portmaster ports (sonic mania sonic cd, Streets of rage remake, stardew valley) ready to go when mine arrives.

Did you get monkey island talkie edition working by any chance? Are you able to share the sleeve link? Would you recommend?

        • I haven't looked into the talkie edition yet. But I will look into it.
I tried sharing a link before to AliExpress and it got unpublished. But if you look for "Soft Protective sleeve switch" you should have some options. The switch lite versions fit snug, and the regular switch versions fit easily but a bit loose. I got both to try and prefer switch lite size.

          • @SueyJitSu: Does it look like a sock? Is there a hard part to protect the screen?

        • Got Monkey Island talkie editions to work by following this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XUl7imiaaQ&ab_channel=Retro…
          :)

          • @SueyJitSu: Amazing! Can't wait to try.
What version of JelOS are you running? I flashed the latest release onto a brand new SD card ready to go but heard some people having issues on their x55 with newer builds.

            • @dajackal: 20231230 is the version I'm using now. Haven't had any issues.
20240109 literally just released 10 minutes ago. Haven't upgraded to that yet.

              • @SueyJitSu: Oh lol time to reflash then. Thanks for the heads up.

Do you do OTA updates or do you reflash each time?

                • @dajackal: I started with 20231220 and just did OTA to 20231230 yesterday. I will OTA to today's version sometime later today 😁
