Had this on my camels watchlist. All time low.

Not as good a drive as an EVO, but a great price for this capacity and form factor. Pop it in a laptop or as a gaming drive in a desktop maybe.

i have the 8tb blah blah blah low performance

it still out performs any hdd for read speeds and my old 6yo sata ssd

    is good

How quiet is it? I have an old fashioned Hard Drive and it's bloody loud. Want to replace it so I can use my PC in peace and quiet.

      • you cant hear these things at all as far as i know

      • +4

        0 moving parts. Silent.

  • +3

Is this drive any good for ps4 slim?

    • +1

Will be fine for it. 4tb is a lot for a ps4 though heh.

      • +4

Not enough for a jailbroken ps4

        • True dat. My 1 tb is already full so was looking for an upgrade

  • Would this work for a eufy homebase3?

    • +1

it would but then the constant writing (surveillance) would kill it off way faster than a HDD, had to use a 2TB 2.5” HDD because of that concern.

but if you must, better off chucking in a 512GB/1TB SSD which is way cheaper and still good enough for 24/7 recording + other events etc, you can also archive through USB port on back of homebase if you want to back up.

I don't see this as being good advice anymore, this might've been the case for older much smaller capacities but at 4TB it shouldn't be an issue. 4TB is rated at 1440TBW which averages to 4TB/month for 30 years (smaller capacities have a lower TBW). Worth checking how much data your cameras write per day and how many cameras you're running, I'd say you'll be upgrading this with a larger capacity drive or upgrading your Eufy well before reaching its rated lifetime.

The "HDD is better than this SSD" advice is such next-level garbage advice! Then digs in deeper when he clarifies, a 2.5" HDD! lol That is probably the least reliable format possible. Then he hits rock bottom when he says, but if u must, put a cheaper, smaller SSD - which are always less durable. A true clown show. lol

  • Anyone with ext enclosure recommendations for this?

Edit: went with ugreen enclosure https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-Enclosure-External-Adapter-…

  • Just need 3 or 4x cheaper to finally go flash NAS!

    Just 10 more years

    • +1

Imagine how quick a parity check would be on a flash NAS omg… one day.

      • i can tell you this

        3x 8tb qvo in raid 5 takes 7hrs.
        max speed 350MB/s on a qnap ts464

that max speed is cos raid5.
if i test one by itself then yeah 500MB/s

    • +3

The cheapest I've seen HDD storage is $20/TB. SSDs like this at $50/TB. So, 2.5x cheaper until price parity?

  • Any reliability issues if put in a synology 215j

  • +1

Is this good enough for storing games on PC?

    • Absolutely. It’s almost ideal.

For more important files (family photos) you might want an EVO (I picked one of the 4TB 2.5s back at Black Friday).

You could arguably look for an M.2 drive for your games but you won’t find one much bigger than 2TB, without paying near $400 for a 4TB NVME.

      • +1

Yeah I prefer 2.5inch as I don’t have any space for nvme. bought this. This will do the job.

        • Yeah I prefer 2.5inch

          the wife disagrees

      • +5

For more important files you would want multiple backups. The storage medium does not matter as much as the number of reliable, accessible backups.

        • +3

Dunno who negged my comment, but yes, that backup method is of course correct.

I was speaking to more general opinions/evidence around the reliability of Samsung's various models, and not more.

    • I've already got a 2TB one for games, it's perfectly fine. Just picked up one of these to replace a couple of game drives.

  • Review seems really good. Am I wasting money using this to store photos and 4K video only???

    • yes very big waste unless you plan to make a nas using these x4 and add 10gbe network and you are a professional videographer that needs the best of the best for workflow

      • Ok so HDD is the way to go then?

        • Yes mechanical disks are the best tb per dollar, just make sure you backup any data you do not want to lose from a failure.

          • @garetz: Ok thanks, seeing any good 4T HDD deals?

            • +1

@Aerith-Waifu: If you only need 4TB then I would stick with this SSD, it's only $100 more than a mechanical option.

SSDs are expensive when you need large capacity - but in small sizes like this, you can avoid mechanical drives entirely

              • @Nom: Apart from size, any other reasons to avoid mechanical drives? More easy to fail?

                • +3

@Aerith-Waifu: Dunno about avoiding mechanical drives but here are some other reasons one might prefer an SSD:

                  • Far superior random read/write performance (sequential can be a toss up though when comparing HDDs to cheap SSDs)
                  • Lower power consumption (e.g. can be used with 2.5" enclosures that don't require a power adaptor)
                  • No spin-up time (which can slow system boot, and delay access to the drive if it's set to power down when idle)
                  • Extremely light weight
                  • Greater shock resistance
                  • Zero noise
                  • Lower failure rate (except perhaps for very high write scenarios such as DVR use)

One potential negative is the uncertainty over how they hold up in cold storage - no one really knows if you leave QLC drive like this unpowered for, say, three years, whether the data will still be fully intact.

      • What about not a professional videographer but just have lots of photos and videos to just playback. Is this ssd worth it over HDD?

  • What’s a comparable nvme option?

    • Comparable in what way? Price, capacity, or model?

      • +1

The cheapest 4tb model that isn’t complete trash :)

        • +1

I might not be the best one to answer. I've been looking to upgrade my internal storage for the past few months and decided to not even really look for 4TB M.2 drives because the price is too high. 2TB M.2s seem to go on sale much more frequently. I bought a couple of 2TB M.2s, one 4TB 2.5" SSD, and a few 4-6TB spinning drives to cover various file types. :)

Complete trash is possibly subjective, as some brands get less love here on OzB than others. Maybe take a look at this list:

          https://au.pcpartpicker.com/products/internal-hard-drive/#f=…

          • +1

@Frunk: Yeah I paid 229 for the Pny a few months back so wasn’t expecting to pay more.

This one is a pretty decent price, I just don’t want to invest in more sata ssds

  • +1

thanks op bought one for the laptop :)
merry christmas everyone stay free stay healthy and be free and healthy forever :)

  • +1

    got one. cheers op

  • Would this be ok in Dell optiplex server for adding storage? I dont need more thab 4tb at the moment

  • +2

    Thanks, bought 2.

  • I want to use 4 of these drives in raid 0 as a constant write disk and transfer of torrents to a 200tb raid array. Would being multi cell, do you think these drives would survive that use case?

    • Look at the TBW (1440), and divide it by the guesstimate of many TB you'll download over a year - that will tell you how long they will last in that application.

Even with gigabit internet, one of these would be able to handle the sustained writes. Unless you download multi-terrabyte torrents, or you have lots of money, in which case go for it.

    • Why would you want 4 of these instead of a single 16TB mechanical drive for this purpose ?
That's not an application that needs any specific performance level - the 16TB mechanical will work just as well as the SSD RAID for half the price.

      • The risk array is 3000mbps, the internet is a gigabit and the throughput would be desired..

  • Back in stock (84% claimed).

  • Mine 'arrived' today, but when I opened up the Amazon package the security seal on the Samsung product package had already been opened and there was no SSD in there. Never had that happen to me with Amazon before.

    • same here i ordered 2 and one was open and missing

    • Mine hasn't even shipped yet, but maybe this is a blessing

    • Mine has been floating around the country for almost a week, fingers crossed there's actually a drive in there when it arrives in the next couple of days.

    • FYI, seals were intact on mine

    • Mine never arrived, Amazon marked it as lost just today and refunded. Kind of pissed off as I would have bought another option during the sales if I knew they were not actually going to send it.

  • Same here. Marked as lost and refund offered.
