Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - Vinyl $54.68 Delivered @ Rarewaves-Outlet (UK) eBay

510

First ever hip hop album to win an Album of the Year Grammy (there has only been one other to do so). I remember listening to this on my MiniDisc player.

Anyway, I was after Mtv Unplugged No. 2.0 but only 3 left now so can't post.

    What an album!

Especially considering almost everything on the album was written, produced and even sung by other people. They added in her auto-tuned voice digitally over the top of the other singers after they'd made the album at the very end of the process & that was about the only contribution to the entire album. She never worked on 13 of the 14 tracks at all. She was eventually forced into handing over every cent she ever made & all the royalties to the musicians, artists and producers she ripped off.

She only narrowly avoided prison for fraud and other charges, then ended up filing for bankruptcy, still owing artists she ripped off over $10 miillion.

When police and the IRS investigated, it turned out this wasn't even the first time she'd pulled this shit & had been doing the same under false names since the very early 90's, including having filed for bankruptcy when busted pulling the same routine on others. What's even more laughable is that she also made up her entire background story about being poor & from the ghetto, etc…. She came from a wealthy upper-middle class family in New Jersey, her dad was a senior computer engineer and consultant/stake-holder in IBM, as well as owning his own company.

        Thats hilarious

Like Kanye West and Ben Carson and so many people

Why is her wikipedia so clean? The usual wikipedia shenanigans?

Or is this a matter of dispute and varying recollections and rumours? In which case how do you know you're right?

        • +1

Pretty well publicised a decade ago that she went to jail, plus owed a bunch of other musicians and collaborators money.

A great era of music nonetheless..

          • @buffalo bill: Tax evasion (which she claims was unintentional)

Nothing to do with any fraud
            https://www.justice.gov/usao-nj/pr/singer-and-actress-lauryn…

            And she settled a lawsuit
(Not unusual for rich people to pay go away money without admitting fault
And ive seen claims that her lawyers advised against settling and felt they could win and that she wanted it over for spirtual reasons)

All of that could be bullshat because she is a narcissist or something
Likewise all of it could be true because shes religious and doesnt care about money and is disorganised including when making music

            I dont know

        • +1

          Why do you think…

        • Her crimes were international news for years when they happened, with her prison time covered by every mainstream media outlet globally.

          • -1

@infinite: Find one and post here then please? I can still only find tax evasion and a lawsuit

            • -2

@bargain huntress: As in they were covered live on Television and in print media.

This happened over 10 years ago.

              • -1

@infinite: Again it should be relatively easy to find a single archived report of it online and show us all

                • -1

@bargain huntress: LOL, you want an internet link to a television broadcast from over 10 years ago.

                  Haaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha

                  • -1

@infinite: Dude, newspapers are archived online from HUNDREDS of years ago.
There is plenty of television news broadcasted 10 years ago on the internet too.
You cant find a single one?
Is your ego so huge that you cant admit you have a false memory from her tax evasion and law suit?

                  • +1

                    @infinite: Edit the wiki mate

      • +4

Interesting, there a link to an article or articles on this ?

      • +3

Do you have anything to back any of this up? I can see from a quick google she had tax evasion issues, nothing to do with most of what you've said there.

        • +2

Yeh that's why I asked if there were links to articles, only thing I found was 5 years ago one person accused her of stealing the music but more of a he said she said thing… Definitely nothing as damning as what's outlined above…

On the other hand Pras Michel from fugees, now that dude is going to jail and has many articles about his situation.. Lol

      • +1

none of that is remotely true… lol.

      • Most of what you wrote is nonsense, although it's true she didn't properly credit people that contributed to the album. For a balanced account, with direct quotes from people who actually worked with her, read this Rolling Stone article from 2008.

      • +1

She's also a super, super religious nut. Ironic with all the crime she committed…

    Still have my sony minidisc

    • Haha yeah I still have my Sony MD Walkman and discs. It recorded too so would record sets mixing my vinyl.

    • +1

If it's NetMD and you haven't used it for a while you might not know you can now drag and drop tracks in your browser. Or you might, in which case how good is Web MiniDisc Pro

      • Yeh, its a netmd.

Had a top of the range panasonic , sold it 5 years ago for $600.

Then realised i missed the MD so much i sourced the sony from an audio forum and the guy was kind enough to give it for free, juat had to source a PSU and battery

    • +3

Nice to see other MD users in the wild. I had so much fun with Minidisc.

  • +1

I loved this album back in the day. I also re-bought the vinyl many years ago in a short lived vinyl revival phase

  • +2

    That thing..

  • +2

Damn rosebank is a hip hop head and is into his watches. What a playa! 😂

  • Probably my favourite Hip Hop album along with Nas' Illmatic.

  • +1

Damn, I'm not gonna buy this but thanks for the reminder that this album exists.

  • So much better than the crap that's being churned out these days

    • How?

She Mill Vanilli'd the entire thing and went bankrupt owing the artists and producers who made the album over $10 Million.

      • +1

The music….not the person. I couldn't care less what she did. That era of music is much better than the current autotuned, made for 45s tiktok clip, then stretched into a full length track rubbish that's being produced now.

        • +2

That era of music is much better than the current autotune… rubbish

FYI, the year this album came out was literally THE year of autotune's rise to popularity.

        • Dude, they literally used autotune to make her sound the way she did and digitally imposed her voice on to the music tracks - she never even touched or contributed to 13 of the 14 tracks at all, they'd all been written and produced by other people for a separate band's album completely and then she & her associates stole their music and published it under her name.

      • Fugees were the shit

      • +4

You sound super upset that people like this album lmao

      • She never went bankrupt, i cant find anything about that.

        She settled for 5 mil.

Do you just make stuff up?

    • You're listening to the wrong music/artists.

    • +4

There's heaps of good shit out there these days and it's easier than ever to find, you're just not looking for it.

  • +1

    Such an awesome album!

  • +3

remember when vinyls going for like $30-40 was getting suss… then $40-50 lol. most of jbhifis crap is pushing $70 these days. we're only talking like last 10 years…. its absurd.

    • +1

Agree, you shouldn't have to pay more than $30-40 imo, which you probably can achieve for mainstream stuff on sale. It is hyped or inflated for the nostalgia but there must be some supply and demand affecting it.

CD is still the superior format just not as 'cool'

Erykah Badu would be good, more soul though
    Baduizm Live is great.

    • +1

Baduizm is dope. I have it on vinyl

      • +2

Quality mate, I thought you may.

Ok another note I never realised how good Eminem is, watched a doco on Amazon (I think). I mean I liked it at the time and was the first huge white rapper type thing, but didn't realised he had the highest amount of selling albums out of everyone some years. He's the real deal.
