This previously popular/controversial torch from Wuben is back on sale and a lot cheaper than previous deals. As always it's important to check reviews surrounding the output of torches due to being total lumens being overstated. According to the linked review you can expect close to 10,000lm for a minute before it drops down to 2600lm in high mode. Certainly not a bad torch for completely lighting up dark areas.

It's using 3x CRE XHP70.20 6000K LEDs, has an IP55 waterproof rating, uses two 21700 batteries for a total of 4800mAh battery capacity with 27W USB-C fast charging and weighs 379g total.

    Actual lumens or china lumens?

        Actual reading or china reading?

  • What controversy?

I own the white version of the torch. I really like the features. Solid build, fast charging, extremely bright.

edit: Beam is hot enough to pop balloons.

My first post on this had a lot of people calling into question the brightness and need for such a brightness.

      • Ahhh I see. I thought you meant from people that know what they are talking about :P

          Dull people ?

The Nightsun spotlight used on police helicopters is 60,000 lumens. So just a few of these . Allegedly 😀

        • Please don't use these on ANY helicopter.

          • @Sleuth: It was clear I meant "mounted on" the helicopter, pointing down, right?

          Hmmm, number crunch fun time!

5 or 6 X1s gives the same lumens up close, for a short time period. (based on the rated spec)

But the very focused Nightsun does 32 lux at 1,000m with a 70m illuminated area width.

VS 0.25 lux at 303m for the X1, but with an illuminated area about 250 meters wide.

          So you'd need about 1,400 X1s to equal the Nightsun's 32 lux at 1km.

Of course since the Nightsun is much more focused, our 1,400 X1s will light up a much larger area. But they will also only output the full brightness for a short time. We'd need 7,000+ X1s at the sustained output.

If we went for something more focused, such as the Sofirn SF26, then we could get similar to 32 lux at 1,000m with ~130 torches. But more like 900+ for sustained output. It would be illuminating an area larger than the Nightsun, but not hugely. The array of SF26s would be a 2m x 2m grid weighing 200kg. It would use 5,000W+, vs the 1,600W for the nightsun. We can probably reduce these numbers by 50% with forced air cooling.

A key issue with LEDs is creating high enough output in a small enough area to focus it well, and get a long range spotlight. Even with a custom LED setup (rather than 1000 torches duct taped together), an array of LEDs would be needed, and it would be much larger, and heavier than the Nightsun. And not ideal for hanging off a helicopter.

So yes, the takeaway here is I have a weird sense of "fun".

  • Are these available in a warmer colour temp?

    • +1

That's what's stopped me after the wuben c3, too cool. 5000k max colour temp is usable for me.

  • These aren't very good

      🕳️

    • +1

Don't worry… They make up for it by being very expensive!

    • +1

I think that depends on your usage. I don't have one, but there are very few torches at this price and size that can sustain 2,500 lumens for 2 hours. (Double that if you fit higher capacity 21700 cells).

The short turbo run time is normal, because it's not feasible to dissipate the heat in a torch this size. That doesn't mean turbo isn't useful. I use a less powerful torch (Sofirn SP33S) that I use for boating. It sustains about 1800 lumens, and turbo is closer to 5000. Even when running at the sustained output, you can still use turbo for a short time period.

For me, boating often involved using a dinghy at night, at ~20 knots, in an area with the occasional log in the water and sandbars etc. The SP33S has completely replaced my usual spotlight. I can drive (tiller steer outboard) with one hand, and use the torch with the other. Being able to briefly shift to turbo (which adds a lot of light) when I see something at a distance is very useful, and is normally only needed for 5 or 10 seconds.

I am tempted by the Wuben X1 (especially at this price), because it would be even better. But it's IP55 rated, and I am not sure how well it will hold up against salty water spray. Whereas when I want to cool the SP33S off in hot weather, I purposefully hold it in the water spray…
