Pretty impressive specs. But does it really perform?
There's so many cheap but highly spec laptops out there now it makes me wonder if they are really that good.

    • +2

A lot of the components in these laptops are the same. What do you mean by 'does it really perform'?

      • +1

yes if they are all the same, why are some models priced so much more than others with the similar or lower spec?

These are Quad core i7 with 2Gb graphics (dedicated). Compared to this:
        http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/computers/ultrabook/z93…

well not exactly apples to apple but I'm sure someone in here understands what I mean here…

        • What you put as link is a Toshiba ultra book and not a notebook, and I'm assuming you know ultra-books are here. Different category hence different prices.

        • +2

Raw computing and graphics performance depend on few key components (i.e : CPU, GPU, RAM and HDD), as long as they are same, performance will be pretty much identical. But there are many other non performance related factors contributing to the cost of a notebook. To name a few :

          • quality of the display (IPS or TN panel),
          • build quality and materials used (Cheap plastics vs use of metals and premium plastics)
          • quality of the mainboard and other peripherals (Web cam, Power circuitry, cooling hardware, keyboard and touchpad, onboard audio and sound cards etc..)
          • Brand recognition & manufacturer's profit margins (Apple or Acer)
          • Emphasis on warranty (length and level of support),
          • Where its made,
          • Who is selling (Bing Lee or Harvey norman)
          • I’m sure you can think of few more…
    • Well you are getting a jap brand laptop. Kinda similar to why people buy sony laptops at a massive premium

      • The specs are there because of components made by Intel and NVIDIA, unless you think you're being scammed with fake parts then of course it'll perform.

  • I've tested the free shipping and it should be ok

    • I'm still getting this. Can you help rep?

  • +2

Great price…but gees, that res! Shudders

    • +3

wish it has better res, I found it really hard to work on 1366x768 res now adays

  • +1

How long is this sale going to go for?

    • I'd like to know too.

    • It says expires tomorrow

      • Where does it say that?

        • Until 17/10/2012 (Expires Tomorrow)

          Under the tags.

  • how this compare with last deal from megabuy, the samsung one $599 + shipping, the spec quite similar

    • graphics card is slightly worse in this one, but on the plus side because its got Optimus (2 gfx cards) you'll get quite good battery life out of this.

Im very tempted, but that res just won't cut it!

      • the sammy has switchable graphics too between it's ATI 7670 and Intel HD 4000 so you will also get good battery life

  • Bought a HP M6-1009TX for $798 at JB Hi-Fi last week, excellent price given the price now and before.
Specs are amazing, went and bought a 4GB stick of DDR3 ram for an extra $23 at MSY…

      I missed out too.

    • ooooooooooooooooops

    • Still worth the value! Now selling for $1000!

  • Awesome deal.

I got the Samsung NP350V5C-S02AU JB deal for $645 before the second price drop.

I would have got this deal instead if I didn't jump the gun.

    Toshiba/Samsung NP350V5C-S02AU comparison:
Both models have the same CPU
1TB HDD in the Toshiba, 750GB HDD in the Samsung
    Same res for both
8GB RAM in the Toshiba, 4GB RAM in the Samsung
Better graphics card in the Toshiba(2GB dedicated), the Samsung's is 1GB dedicated.

    Worth the extra money anyday!

    • -1

gfx RAM doesn't really make much difference.. the 7670M is just slightly better than the 630M. the best deal so far was the HP M6-1009TX though

      • lol why was i negged for this when it's simply the truth? :S

        • I was negged too

  • -1

    Screen res :(

  • .

  • -2

It’s 2012… why are people still selling 1366 × 768 15" laptops!? My 5" phone screen is about that resolution. I realise it is personal preference, but I strongly urge anyone who isn’t fully aware of how ridiculous and horrible that resolution is to go check out a full HD 15" laptop first. The screen is going to be the primary thing you will notice and use on your laptop and you can’t just upgrade the screen later. Getting a better screen will be a significantly more important specification than processor or memory or hard drive size for the vast majority of people.

    • +3

No disrespect, can u tell me where , which laptop I can get for $699 with high res screen and good specs.

      • +1

I'll take a small guess and say you can't. But unless the buyer is plugging this into a monitor it would be worth investing more money to get a higher resolution screen if they can afford it.

5 years ago I bought a notebook with a screen better suited for viewing webpages, it can still do everything most people will need from a portable computer except play the latest games. Maybe the manufacturers should focus on lower CPU/GPU speeds and make the screens a higher resolution.

I think portable computers should focus on battery life, keyboard/touch pad, weight, durability and screen resolution before CPU, GPU, RAM and HDD. Plus for notebooks SSD's should also be a big priority, it offers faster boot speeds but also the moving of a notebook around won't affect it as much.

This is not targeted specifically at you bezanel, but I personally feel its a bit of a waste offering very high spec notebooks when you can't even see a some webpages clearly.

    • its not like people are going to watch a BLU RAY quality movie on a 15 inch laptop anyway right?

      • More to the point, you can’t really do much of anything on something that low res. Try editing multiple documents? Viewing complex web pages? Viewing two web pages at once… it’s just very low.

        • I found 2 abandoned laptops (maybe 14in 4:3 screens) on the street last week in working condition. Both of them supported 1600 x 1200 resolution, with the older laptop (with a floppy drive :))dating back to 2001. While laptops generally look, feel, weigh and cost a lot cheaper these days, I admit it does feel a bit weird begging for vertical resolutions that were provided over a decade ago.

The sore point for a lot of buyers is that laptops are cheap enough now that they're the first choice of computer for a lot of consumers, and the modern house is becoming desktop free. I've worked in offices where temps are given laptops (and sore necks) as standard - as its much easier to setup a desk with a laptop and store them away later.

So while I understand why people say "why would you do work on laptop?" the reality is a lot of people do that need more than 720 (Adobe After Effects etc) but also have limited budgets. I personally had never used 1600 x 1200 in the old days anyway because I found it way too small (kinda like looking at my desktop from a plane :)).

  • Anyone interested in pickup, call the stores.
I'm heading down to pick up this arvo.

    out of stock

    • -1

Though the page still says In Stock… It only says out of stock when you try to add to cart. I call bait and switch.

      • 5 left guys then we are sold out. More deals soon

        • can't wait.

  • can you make it for $599? everything is negotiable right?

    • Found 5 more then thats it guys
      Thanks for supporting the deal

      • 11 minutes and all 5 are gone

    • $599 please with sugar on top.

      • +1

        If I could I would.

        • Rep I bought one but am not sure. Will there be any specials on laptops with higher resolution?

        • but even if you cant do $599, you can do give us something lower than $699 right. everything is negotiable?

  • If only NewEgg shipped to Australia:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834256…

This refurbished notebook has a screen resolution of 1600 x 900 and going for $668 USD.

I've been trying but can't find low cost notebooks with a higher resoltion than 1366x768. Since they are not available in Oz I guess this deal is a great price.

    • +1

My apologies if this isn’t appropriate here, but if you are looking for refurbished laptops, check out Grays Online. People such as Sony use them to sell their refurbished gear. Obviously it isn’t new and may be scratched or damaged and you forfeit a proper warranty, but it is of course also cheaper than new.

      • really shouldn't compare refurbished laptops to normal/new laptops
        my experience? avoid refurbished laptops!

        • Yes, of course: please don’t compare new to old. One is new with warranty etc., the other you take your chances with (or have short 3 month warranty or similar). However, if one can’t pay more than $600 or so and wants a higher resolution screen, refurbished may be the best (or perhaps only?) option.

      • That website is a good suggestion, I found:

        Sony VAIO™ E Series 1600 x 900 for $629.

If purchased, buy a notebook cooler pad, stress test everything for 3 days solid, and if there are scratches buy one of those high quality notebook stickers and try to make it look trendy.

        http://www.graysonline.com/retail/sve14a15fgw-r/computers-an…

  • Damn… already out of stock. :S

  • who ever said the gpu in this laptop is better than the samsung from jbhifi is wrong, the gpu in sammy is faster, 7670m is faster than 630m it dosent matter if 630m has 2gb, simple google search will show the same

    • true.. This is still a better deal than the Samsung though. Only better deal was Bing Lee's HP deal last week.

Word on the street (in this thread actually) is Bing Lee has more laptop deals coming. Hopefully as good as last week's deals. Only two weeks before the Windows 8 stock hits the shelves.

  • Rep if you're still there. The website says that it has backlit keyboard, Can you please confirm? Thank you

  • Done deal, I picked one up this arvo $689.
To all I agree with the res, I played the sample videos a bit choppy but I watch movies on HD TV. But for pictures , I am satisfied with res.

With Win 8 coming soon, a few ppl and sites speculate it will be like Vista. Nothing crash hot, that's what I've heard but all can judge for themselves.

    • Bezel does it have backlit keys?

      • Yes, sry for the short story below.
for the price it's great. I've been tweaking it but with 2 kids hanging off my legs im a bit tied up. Eg file swapping set as default 8000 , windows recommended 12000. A few things could be tweaked. Will update post if anyone interested.

        • lol thanks. Hope it doesnt become their flash gaming laptop

        • they can have the i3 Acer travel mate 5740 with 2GB of Ram. For me jumping from that laptop to this is amazing.

    • .

    • Vista was pretty slow until SP2.
Windows 8 is faster than Win7 SP1. If you're concerned about the lack of a start menu, there are now numerous ways to get the start menu back.

  • May I know why the HP M6 for $645 is better deal than the Samsung $577 deal from Bing Lee last week? The only difference is the graphic card (HP has 2gb dedicated ram vs Samsung has 1gb dedicated ram). Both appear to use the same ATI 7670m graphic card.

    • M6 has a 7760M not 7670M.. much better video card for gaming.

    • HP has much better build with shiny aluminium. HP has way better speakers (this Toshiba deal seems to have pretty good speakers too). I suppose you did have to pay an extra $70 for that but worth it imo. Better than having to lug usb speakers around everywhere.

  • What! Backlit keys! That's epic!

Good luck finding any i7 at this price with backlit keys.

Really wish if I held off from the JB HI FI Samsung deal the other week :(

    so butthurt.. sigh

    • I feel your pain. try some anusol for your hurt butt.

  • -2

as for those hating the screen res.. well COTD has an Asus N56 1920x1080 15.6" with an awesome 650M gfx card.. but comes at almost twice the cost.. $1299

  • I don't like Bing Lee!

7 days after ordering an "in stock" laptop Bing Lee still haven't even sent it from their warehouse!!

They inform me that they are waiting for Toshiba, and can give me no estimate on when they will dispatch the laptop. On a side note they were very quick to charge my credit card!

  • I had to initiate all contact with Bing Lee! If I wanted this level of service I would've ordered from shopping square!

    • Hmmm…I ordered a laptop online with Credit card from them, and 2 days later my laptop arrived. Think you just got unlucky. My experience so far with them has been good, I even called them up for a refund on postage which I received the following day without any problems.
