Panasonic DP-UB450GN 4K UHD Blu Ray Player $279 (RRP $399) + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

600

First time poster so please be nice and point out anything I've stuffed up.

I needed a 4K player that supported Dolby Vision as the XBox doesn't support Dolby vision for discs…. Found this deal at JB online and used Uber to deliver to my joint in less than an hour.

Its also the same price on Amazon but I wanted it today as I have movies to watch! It's not the cheapest its been but it's still a good deal IMO.

So weird that Xbox supports DV for games and streaming but not for disc playback.

PS5 doesn't even have that level of support though.

    • +7

After some research I found that the most likely answer is because Dolby Vision for movie playback requires a specific chip set and/or other hardware dedicated to that sort of specific output. Probably too expensive for consoles to implement for a "secondary feature"

      • +3

It’s so strange hey, seems like such a small speed bump. In Sony’s case I guess their thinking is that if they had Dolby Vision on console they’d be sinking their own dedicated player market. But I personally would have bought a PS5 instead of an Xbox if they could play DV movies so 🤷🏻‍♂️

      • +7

Probably don’t want to pay the license fee

        • +2

That's what I thought as well, yet they seemingly pay the fee for game compatibility, so 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • +3

Yes very annoying… The Xbox is also super loud when playing discs.

Brilliant username considering this is your first post despite being around since 2019

haha! been waiting this long for a bluray deal apparently!

  • Note that you can have it unlocked to play DVDs from any region (but not bluray discs sadly).

    • How does this happen?

      • +2

Contact Panasonic service centre and they'll do it for free.

        • Why would they do it for free?

          • +6

            @AlexF:

Can my Panasonic DVD product or Blu Ray product be unlocked to play discs from other regions?

Our Panasonic DVD & Blu Ray products are region encoded for DVD Region 4 out of the box, but can be multi-zoned to play DVD's from all regions. Your DVD unit or Blu-Ray unit can be multi-zoned by any of our Service Agents free of charge and some models of DVD Player are able to be multizoned by the customer.

Take your player plus tax invoice/receipt to Panasonic's nearest authorised service technician. The job of unlocking DVD region codes (but NOT Blu-ray codes) takes less than 15 mins. It's free of charge under warranty, but phone the techie first as they may have a work backlog.

Don't wast time calling Panasonic first unless you cannot find their techies on the Panasonic web-site. Panasonic has streamlined this procedure to what I described in the first paragraph. It took me 90 mins of waiting on hold to find that out. It should have been made clear on the Panasonic web-site but wasn't. I guess Panasonic are not giving it up unless the customer asks for it,

        eBay AU:
        https://www.ebay.com.au/str/gattiaudio?_trksid=p4429486.m356…
About $670 for a brand new pre-modified player.
About $250 for an upgrade service.

        Direct web-site link:
        https://www.gattiweb.com/

If you want this player to play ANY REGION DVD and ANY ZONE BLU-RAY. There is a chap who sells a kit to modify the player. Google search or look up eBay.com.au for David Gattis Audio (https://www.gattiweb.com). Not cheap, but It's worth it. It maintains your warranty and doesn't interfere with the players firmware. You pay for your own shipping to get your unit to him in Melbourne and return shipping cost is included in the purchase fee for the module. It's not exactly a user-serviceable part and requires skill and know-how to effect the modification.

        • For my collection and future theoretical purchases I don't see this as a super viable option right now

As it stands, my Criterion region A discs work on my UB820 by using the STOP > TOP MENU method

          • @Faro: Stop & 2x Top Menu

            • @AlexF: I've had it work with one press, but whatever works for you

    • It can be modified to play all region bluray’s

      • True. But that's going to cost you a few dollars, isn't it? I should have put 'free of charge' in my initial comment, of course.

    • +1

I modded mine with a chip to make it region free for all disc types

    • +2

Good thing is that 4K Blu-rays aren't region locked!

  • +2

Good deal! Enjoy that sweeeet HDR goodness. What’s your first movie off the ranks?

  • Or to unlock everything dvd yourself just buy this.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/110602620681?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • Are you sure? Just to quote the item description:

Please note that for Blu-ray players the remote will only enable multi-region for DVD's, but the Blu-ray region will remain locked

      • Why my post says dvd

        • right, sorry missed that.

    • +1

This is ozbargain, why pay $40 when Panasonic will do it for free lol

  • I'm interested in what the Panasonic DP-UB820 has over this one for double the cost, specifically for playing Blu-Ray and UHD Blu Ray discs?

    • +4

I think it has a HDR optimiser that the UB-450 doesn't have and it up-scales non-4k content better. The 450 is fine for what I'm planning to use it for.

      • Thanks!

I'm only really interested in it for Dolby Atmos and HDR content but I'm sure the HDR optimiser isn't worth double the price.

    • I'm interested in what the Panasonic DP-UB820 has over this one for double the cost

I believe it also supports more video/audio formats and codecs for playback via USB or from a media server.

    • Second HDMI optionally output HD video (in addition to audio).

  • +1

I've had this player for a while now, highly recommend it.

  • Does it do 3d?

    • +1

      Yes, supports 3D.

    • You still have a TV that supports 3D?

      • Abso-lutely. Best way to watch many movies. 4k was just a way for TV manufacturers to get you to spring for a new TV

I once went down the rabbit hole of trying to 'perfect' a home cinema experience and bought one of these and spent thousands on amps/speakers etc.

Honestly, learn from my mistakes, for 99% of the people here, you DO NOT need this. A xbox one, decent UHDTV and soundbar is more than enough.

    • +3

As someone who was sick of the skipping, weird colours and lack of HDR options on my Xbox One, learn from my mistakes and MAKE YOUR OWN CHOICES.

My UB820 has been a noticeable jump for me over the Xbox One in every area that bothered me.

Reminds me of my old 'cutting edge' (at the time) 5.1 surround sound system.

I loved it but there were cables everywhere, it required hours of setup, and no-one could work it but me.

Now I have a sound bar, everyone loves it and there's zero thought required. Sounds pretty good too!

There's a lot to be said for using the easy and simple version.

      • And these days the soundtracks are mixed such that you need to use subtitles if you don't want to wake everyone else in the house while watching movies.

        • Oh yeah. It's so bad. Even old movies, I was watching Rocky the other night and the dialogue is so quiet compared compared to the sound fx and music.

I just watch with remote in hand and ride the volume but yeh, it's terrible.

          • @Sxio: Sounds like you need a 5.1 setup! :P

I wonder what the problem is though - previous poster mentions the way the sound is "mixed" but I haven't often experienced the issue being the audio track itself, and more so how the playback device/speakers are handling it. My current soundbar for example does a great job with speech volume/clarity, while my previous one, with the same Blu-rays, was too quiet for voice and too loud for sound effects and music.

            • @Jabba the Hutt: Hahaha maybe!

It is a pretty good samsung bar though, also has satellites and sub. Has atmos capabilities too which are quite impressive, only issue I find with atmos is that the bass goes way overboard and I have to turn it down to the lowest setting. The connection is bluetooth so not as many cables as my old setup. My blu-rays are pretty good, but anything from a streaming service is pretty bad. I've googled it a few times and I'm not the only one experiencing this, but recently I've become pretty motivated to try and find a decent solution. Fingers crossed!

While that may be true for a dvd player, certainly isn’t true for speakers. Way more than 1% of people could appreciate the difference speakers bring over a sound bar, especially considering that a lot of them are cheaper

  • Its not cheap but for around 100 bux shipped with addon board and plug in cable no soldering required you can unlock all bluray regions .simply plug in chip to cable plug cable into port inside player update firmware, its piece piss to do..

Also this remote control hack has been reported to work on the 450 but pain in the ass doing it for each blu ray disc.
