Recommendations for Lawn Mower, Line Trimmer and Blower ?

Hi Peeps,
First time user, Looking for Recommendations on lawn mower, line trimmer and blower

  • Total mowing area - ~ 140 sqm ( 110 sqm to be mowed regularly)

    • My backyard - 60 sqm
    • Front & side lawn - 80 sqm ( corner plot so around 50 sqm would only be mowed regularly)

a) Features required for mower :

  • Battery powered - 36v ( Petrol is more powerful but with my limited knowledge assuming this wont be required for my size of mowing and also want to avoid jerry cans at home)

  • Cutting height should be easily adjustable

  • Grass bag big enough and easy to operate

  • Foldable and easy to store

  • Brands researched - Ryobi (Bunnings warranty) and EGO ( seems superior power from reviews)

  • Multcher vs catcher ? - I know what these do but not sure which suits my need. Blogs says mulching leaves a cleaner yeard but neven seen one in real time ( 1st time user)

  • Price - 500 - 800$

b) Features required for line trimmer

  • Line length limiting blade
  • Safety guard
  • Telscopic handle (preffered)
  • Lock off switch
  • Shoulder harness (preffered)
  • Price - 200$ - 400$

c) Blower - Please recommend some appropriate models

What options has your research yielded so far? And why are your dollar signs at the end?

  • Telscopic handle (preffered)

    What and why?
Or do you mean telescopic shaft?

    Multcher vs catcher ?

Probably both, here’s a good video about it - https://youtu.be/xmnr2AVCSGw

Nothing wrong with bog standard Ozito stuff from Bunnings. Works perfectly fine and more than suitable for your sizes.

Save the cash for something else. You don’t need an $800 lawnmower for 100 sqm.

I changed from the basic 18v to 36v Ozito mower and it’s basically no time at all to mow my 60sqm odd of grass. The 18v was terrible but the 36v it’s just a few minute job each weekend without any hassle.

The line trimmer though isn’t great though. The bump feed is awful, the line is tangled on the reel from the start and a lot of time is spent stopping to feed it through again. I kinda wish I went ryobi on that. I bought a ryobi line which I’ll put on an Ozito spool to see if it’s better.

      • +1

Change the line. The one that comes with the Ozito is very old, dry and brittle, hence the constant breakage and not able to bump feed.
Keep new lines in an air tight bag with a small amount of water to stop it from drying out

        • I thought the moisture from the air is what makes it brittle. Works that way with 3d printer plastics

I got sucked in with the Ego hype 2-3 years ago when it was all the rage on Ozb. But now all the batteries are failing, lots of people in the same boat here and Reddit etc. If you're lucky enough to have it fail within warranty period, then you can get a replacement but as soon as you're out of it, they don't even care to respond anymore. But since I've already invested in the whole ecosystem, I have to stick with it for now. Should have gotten a Ryobi or something.

    • My experience with AEG mower and batteries has been great. Not sure how long the batteries will last though.

  • Multcher vs catcher

Be careful with the mulcher attachment , if there are any weeds in a section of your yard it will spread them far and wide.

    • -1

if there are any weeds in a section of your yard it will spread them far and wide.

That's a special feature of the Corby420 mulcher mower.

    • Thanks

  • -3

For the mower I recommend the Corby420. It will cut through grass and weed with ease and has a large capacity catcher in the shape of a boogie board.

  • i have ego

  • More volts means more powah!
    also more expensive.

also ryobi batteries have low-voltage protection, so you can more easily cook up a ryobi 36v or 18v to 12v adapter for camping.

  • Go Ryobi, 18v in particular. Their 36v line is a dead end imo since you can't buy normal power tools that run off it.

Don't bother with EGO for a lawn that small, if you ever move you can sell your Ryobi stuff on marketplace and upgrade then.

    • For a lil more you can do Ozito 18VX2

    • Thanks a bunch

    • 2*18V Ryobi or Petrol powered Honda ?

Also, could you pls suggest the relevant model

  • +1

You don’t need EGO. Your lawn isn’t big enough to warrant the extra spend.

Stick with 18v batteries. Ryobi 36v is more powerful, but having a separate battery for 36v wasn’t a great idea by Ryobi. Better to have a 2x18v unit.

Have you got other tools that run on battery? Stick with that brand.

    • No, no other power tools.

Could you please advise, for my needs should go for Petrol powered Honda or 2*18v Ryobi ? Aftere reading above suggestions discarding EGO option

      • I mow twice your lawn area with a 36v Ryobi. I’ll Never own a petrol garden tool at home again, battery doesn’t have as much outright power, but has more advantages. Ease of starting, less noise, no fumes, virtually nil maintenance. Petrol is overkill for you.

        • Thanks. so you have the 2*18v one not 36v ?

  • If you did not have an EGO you'd just be like the rest…

    • Bold and italic. Very fancy.

      • +2

        Very fancy.

        It's Xmas

  • Could you folks please advise between the following models, went to my local bunnings and have the following options:

    1. Ozito - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-36v-2-x-18v-460mm-brus… - $499

*Sturdy built and 2 18V batteries but Ozito's line trimmer and blower are not great

    2. Ryobi - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-36v-46cm-4-0ah-brushless-c…

*36V more power and 46cm wider blades but 36V battery cannot be used with other poer tool mostly 18v but I have none at the moement - $500 ($50 off)

    3. Ryobi - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-40cm-6-0ah-hp-brus… (600)

    • 2*18v so probbaly less power than the above but batteries can be used in other tools. 40 cm narrower blade than the option above. So should I opt for the choice in batteries or wiser cut and more power ?
  • Merged from Recommend Lawn Mower from Researched Options

    Hi Peeps,
First time user, Looking for Recommendations on lawn mower, line trimmer and blower. Had put a separate post here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/820504 but have now narrowed options and looking for quick responses as I will buy this weekend. Will delete or merge posts later

Yes, will merge later or delete one. Needed quicker response and planning to buy tomorrow and hence a new one

    • Bosch 36v lawn mower is on sale for 265 at Amazon. Should be good enough for your use case.

    • Not an answer but I assume you aren’t yet invested in a brand?

I have a lot of ozito and ryobi equipment

I feel that the ryobi gear is a level above the ozito and the range within the ryobi ecosystem has more options

If I was starting over I would probably just dial into ryobi.

Another positive for ryobi is you can get Chinese chargers and batteries easily and in my experience there is no discernible difference in the few years I have had them

      Maybe useful, maybe not ;-)

      • Original Ozito batteries are as cheap as Ryobi knock offs and are heaps better. All Ryobi equipement are expensive. If you want a good 36V lawn mower, then the 36V batteries cannot be reused like the Ozito 36V mower (uses 2 18V). And the ozito 36V mower also has tons of power and heaps cheaper. The Ozito range also has considerably increased now and meets most house users needs. Just few of the plus sides of ozito. I have both ozito and Ryobi stuff.

      • This is really helpful mate !

    • I’d go for the Ryobi 18v 40cm tool only $499 and get the twin 5hp battery pack $239, with charger.
The tool only line trimmer and tool only blower.

I’ve got 50sq mt lawn with a 33cm mower, 5hp battery, mow weekly one battery does the trimming, mowing and blowing, I’ve got 3 batteries as I have other Ryobi tools.

      • Thanks. What for you in the 2*18V one trumps the 36v ?

      • 5hp or 6hp battery? is there much of a difference

    • I have the Ozito one. Works totally fine, catcher is a bit small but otherwise my 30 min or so mowing gets done with 2x batteries. However, I'm in the Ozito system anyway so have extra batteries around. I dont think it does mulching though (mulching is just the mower cutting the grass into tiny bits and dumping it back on the lawn. Its quicker as you dont have to empty the catcher, but only works if you are cutting a small amount off, otherwise you end up with big clumps on the lawn. Adds some additional organic material to the lawn)

    • I’d go the Ryobi 18V that you’ve listed, as others have said compared to Ozito, Ryobi is a step above generally in quality and I agree with your statement about their whipper Snipper particularly.

I wouldn’t go Ryobi 36V just due to 18V being so much more versatile for tools down the future, both garden and home.

      • If not for compatibility why in your opinion the 218 V is better than the 36V as the 36V has wider blades and probably more power as 218V might not provide complate 36v power. I am novice at this and hence these questions, trying to understand and then pick one

        • Having a separate battery size isn’t great for the 36v. Most other brands only have a 2x18v for a reason - it does the job and you can use two batteries in two tools when not mowing

          • @Euphemistic: thanks a ton. two 5hp or two 6hp batteries?

            • @BamOz: It’s Ah for batteries. It’s a measure of their capacity. Can supply X amp for 1hr. In some cases a larger capacity battery will be able to provide more current which means more power. In power hungry tools like a circular saw or blower it will run slightly better with a 5ah battery vs a 2.5ah battery.

Just depends on what you use the batteries for. Your size lawn won’t need a 6ah battery.

    • It's a relatively small area to mow, so I'd focus more on additional aspects that might make the process easier. Are you mowing big open areas, or fiddly small areas? How accessible is your mower storage area? And so on.

For example, I have the older model 36V Ozito steel deck mower (very similar to the new one) and have compared to the smallest Ozito 18V mower (PXCLMS-018) that I was given by someone moving into an apartment.

The big 36V mower is great for the large sections of lawn, but the little mower is surprisingly good IMO in fiddly areas. It's half the weight, much smaller and heaps easier to manoeuvre around. It's less powerful, but will cut all the same stuff and at the same speed unless the grass been left to get overly long. The small mower has a much smaller cutting width, but for fiddly areas, it takes about the same time anyway, and is easier.

Don't get me wrong, I am not suggesting that the little mower is the better option. Just that depending on the specifics of your lawn, then larger and more powerful doesn't always mean better.

I don't bother with the catcher on either mower (and cut at the highest setting, which is better for the grass), and they do a decent enough job mulching. Higher grass means the mulchings are not visible anyway (you can back over the occasional lump that makes it out) and the grass thickens up, and in my experience, doesn't require any more frequent cutting than doing it short. And IMO, looks better, and is softer. (My neighbour goes short, and it looks great for a few days, then looks terrible, so he is out there going over it frequently and often ends up with thin bits. Whereas mine looks lush but neat the entire time, and handles the heat much better.)

I also quite like the Ozito blade trimmer. Some people hate it, but I prefer it to the Ozito line trimmer I was given unless I have a specific job where the line is better. You need to be a precise with the blade trimmer, as it is not designed to have the blade constantly hitting things you don't want to cut. But if you can manage that, it is lighter and gives a neater cut with less effort than the line trimmer IMO.

Also the other big win for Ozito currently (and probably not for much longer) is the 2.5Ah battery and charger deal for $25. The 2.5Ah outputs 720W vs 900W for the 4Ah, so works well in almost all the tools - including 36V ones. You just get shorter run time, but that is rarely a big deal for most tools.

  • Hi Folks,
Is it worth waiting for boxing day to buy the above Ryobi models ?

I know bunnings does some combo deals but would there be any deal on these mowers (not these specific but in general mowers and other equipments) ? I would be buying the whole kit of mower, trimmer, blower and some power tools.

Its just 3 more days but if no deals anticipated then I can buy early and use them before vacation

    • In my experience they don’t often drop the price. They don’t go ‘on sale’. The only time they drop price is if there is a newer model coming.

  • Has anyone tried replacing their Ozito line trimmer plastic blades to metal ones?
