4x4 Suggestions for Offroad Adventures

Call it what you will but lets not label it a midlife crisis just yet.

Are there any people who are into offroad adventures?

I have a plan and it requires a 4x4 with a bit of clearance. It needs to be auto and diesel (so I have been told) and have enough guts to pull a van/camper of which I don't yet have.

Around 20k mark if that is doable. No finance can up it if I need to. Don't know where to start or what make/ model? I don't have any car people around to help me.

Interested to see what you all suggest.

      • It’s pretty cool to be thinking of doing this stuff. It is exciting, but try to be rational about your decisions. You might be better off buying a grandpa spec version vs something that is covered in all the gear.

Have a look at Pajero sport and challenger. Based on a triton, pretty reliable and capable.

Ultimately, you can’t go far wrong with a dual cab ute or a 4wd wagon - as long as it’s got low range.

        What are you coming from?

I’ve had 2007 Navara, 2011 Pathfinder and both quite capable for both towing and off road. Have upgraded to Isuzu well outside your budget though!

      • Just wanting a car first that can make the distance safely.

Do not buy a Gen 3 NM or NP pajero. At their age and Ks the fuel pump can become a $5,000 + problem. Gen 4 has a different fuel system that is ultra reliable.

You don’t need ALL the gear

Correct. Plenty are out there with ALL THE GEAR WITH NO IDEA

  • Mooooove over.
(also, )There's free beef to lucky campers.

  • Just come back from the Gibb River road region in WA. Lots of $200k set ups out there. And some $35k.
The 4X4 you choose will be as good as your driving (all things been equal). Soooooo many (like 2/3 a day) rigs come off that road on the back of a flat bed truck.
I think it was a Ram and big new caravan I saw pulled into Kunanarra. Burnt out gear box I believe…. had to be towed to Darwin to await parts and that bit of the journey was $7k.
    I skipped the road.
But I drove in a petrol, 280k km,Prado 2004 with regular caravan around full lap. One service at Derby and all good.
So if you want to join the guys in their high jinx have deep pockets, but if you want to have a good time…
Prado or any Toyota if going out anywhere other than east coast
    Pack light
    Nothing on roof

Thanks. I might rack your brains if I find anything worth visiting, if you don't mind?

What do you suggest if going to the east coast?

Think they are alluding to east coast having a lot more service centres so easier to get parts for other brands. if you go outback WA the mechanics have all deal with Toyotas and more likely to have parts.

        • ahhhh makes sense.

Drive a Pajero and you wont need mechanics or parts.
